DON'T DO THIS when shooting Mirrorless! Electronic Shutter Photography FAIL
Ғылым және технология
So you got yourself a Mirrorless Camera. Well, this week I am here to warn you... DON'T DO THIS when shooting Mirrorless. I'll be teaching you this Electronic Shutter Photography FAIL and how to avoid it in your photographs.
So we recently switched to Mirrorless Sonys from our Canon DSLRs and had to learn this the hard way. Despite allowing faster continuous shooting, Electronic Shutter is actually slower than a Mechanical Shutter. This can cause a rolling shutter effect, prominent with fast moving objects and artificial lighting.
Welcome to our brand new series F*CK UP Friday, where we share all of our spectacular fails of our Photography and Videography careers to hopefully save you from our cringeworthy experiences. This week we talk Electronic Shutter.
We all make mistakes, and it definitely makes us better creators. Here is to celebrating trying and failing! Let us know what you think of our new series, if you like the format, and what you want to see from us next week. Lots of Love, Sal & Bart.

Don't know how I missed this vid but loving the idea for the series! And totally feel your pain on this, if you have consistent lighting then shutter speeds in multiples of the countries electrical supply rate, 50hz I think in the UK then shutter speeds in multiples of that help like 100th of a second for example. Definitely helped me shoot a baptism once. But I seen elsewhere it was led lights of various sorts, they all have a mind of their own lol, so good you can go back mechanical shutter though. Hope you guys are all safe and well, Cheers, jim 👍🏻

We are all good Jim! Glad you enjoyed the video too. It's so important I think to show people the learning proces and we have always wanted to have an open and honest channel on here - just being ourselves :D Hope you are well too!
Wow, I had no clue about that issue at all. I don't own a mirrorless yet but good to know for the day I get one! I love this idea for the new F*CK UP FRIDAY! :D It's a great way to solve issues that we all can avoid. Thank you! :)

Thanks for this great tip. I do know the LED lightbulbs that so many people use today in their homes and other public buildings don't stay on continuously like an incandescent filament bulb. LED lightbulbs flicker extremely fast and a very fast shutter speed can catch these flickers showing the bulb as sometimes on or off and cause odd lighting effects in your photos.
@TRIOStories
3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right! In this case we were actually using a mixture of lighting as well, so the flickering was at slightly different frequencies and couldn't be eliminated using a specific shutter speed too easily. The electronic shutter definitely makes your camera sensor far more susceptible to pick up some of these weird and wonderful lighting :D
thats because the lighting hz doesnt match the shutter speed. dont do electronic shutter when there is lighting. but if youre using sun everything is ok.

Thanks! We learnt that pretty quickly after this incident :)
I recently just moved from dslr to mirrorless I’m a concert photographer and realized my entire set has those lines Is there anyways to maybe remove them on Lightroom or photoshop?? I have to deliver these photos and don’t know what to do ahh Thank you for these tips :)

No problem at all. Unfortunately, at the time of recording the vid - there wasn’t really a good way to get rid of them :( I have no idea now, maybe some AI tool can help? Sorry to hear that it’s affected your images. It’s honestly something we weren’t expecting either!
Love the title of the series 😂👌🏼

Thank you so much sarge! Just an idea we had to help people feel more confident making mistakes - we all make them so it's just about learning from them! :D
Okay I got a fun one... Recently got the Canon r8. I used it in concert photography and had these banding issues but much more extreme. I went to change the shutter from electronic to mechanical and come to find out there is no mechanical in the r8. Only electronic first curtain and electronic shutters are available. The rooms I shoot in are primarily LED lit rooms and tested both shutters with the same issue on both. Without mechanical as an option where does that leave me?

I will be honest - we have no idea! We left the Canon ecosystem after YEARS of using Canon DSLRs when we decided to go more into video and went mirrorless. We tested the R5 and R6 and we were disappointed unfortunately :( so sorry we cant be of more help and sorry to hear about your experience.
gahhh ive got home after a paid gif in the full on restaurant kitchen and have these lines throughout :(( any tips on fixing in lightroom, im having to brush over areas with the texture brush at -100 FML!
@TRIOStories

Ahhh 😩 So sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, other than literally bringing each photo into Photoshop and cloning away the lines, it’s very tricky to fix in post. You can also try some different combinations of selection tools and Content-Aware fill in PS, depending on how hard the edges are, it MIGHT work with some of the lines. Wish we could be of more help 🫣

@@TRIOStories hey thanks for the quick reply! yeah all good aye im getting by with the clarity and texture sliders atm then cloning in were ever its major haha, just doing more steps to the process, completely never had to deal with these types of things in all my years, Silent shutter was the FAIL! didn't even really need it on in the kitchen haha
I have the same problem with mechanical shutter… can’t seem to understand why
@TRIOStories
Жыл бұрын
Hi Lenem! That’s very unusual. You definitely shouldn’t experience this with the mechanical shutter unless your camera is faulty? Do you have some example photos?
Have you made any improvements ( because I have not and no one wants to answer the question if one can use e-silent shutter even with the A9II above 1/60sec under LED lighting )
@TRIOStories
Жыл бұрын
I have to admit - after making this mistake once, I have NEVER since shot with electronic shutter. ONLY ever with mechanical, because I am literally worried that it could happen again due to some bulb or LED.
@mamumonkan
Жыл бұрын
@@TRIOStories yes it happens all the time , but none of the fan boys want to address the issue nor pop the question. They all seem to be in agreement to remain silent since Jared made the big stink with the A9 four years ago. There is not even a plugin by Topaz although you would think the problem could be fixed pretty easy in AI with a combination of multiple shots in camera and masking in the image processor or software.
@TRIOStories
Жыл бұрын
@@mamumonkan Absolutely, it's definitely an issue that should at least be addressed and spoken about for sure. For us personally, we don't see much of a drawback of just using the mechanical shutter. I prefer to hear the sound of the shutter when I am taking photos anyway and never find needing the extra shooting FPS performance, so it's just not a major problem for us. But agreed, that Sony should address it.
I fail a lot... Does that mean I'm learning a lot or just suck?!

When I pull up a camera tutorial I don't expect to hear the word f*** in the first 10 seconds. It's childish and unprofessional. I understand this is just part of modern culture, but I'm sick of it.
