    Dude, this summer and fall was ALL midge fishing. We had huge stones, October caddis, and green drakes going off like crazy, but they’d refuse naturals and dries, unless they were midges. Sometimes, they like to keep you on your toes.

    @@venturesflyco Haha seriously. I’m a guide on the Saint Joe river in North Idaho. All my dry fly purist clients just refused to nymph or streamer fish. First time I’ve ever had skunked clients.

    If you can see fish rising from where you’re parked then I tie a parachute adams to start and then work from there but sometimes rigging up by the river isn’t the easiest because sometimes there’s a lot of trees or bushes. Unlike that river which is a fly fisherman’s heaven 🔥

    I just rig up a sow bug, they always catch fish everywhere in about any conditions even if there are no sow bugs in the water 😅 I will change if there’s a hatch because who doesn’t love dry flies? Or steamers if that’s what the conditions call for the day.

    Can you drop a nymph under a griffiths gnat dry? Or are they too small to carry something

  • @venturesflyco

    @venturesflyco

    Жыл бұрын

    Depends on the size of the nymph and Griffiths gnat. It’s definitely possible. Here I was using a size 16 hi-vis griffith’s with a tiny size 22 midge emerger. Obviously nymphs with bead heads will be harder to hold up than those without. It comes down to trying out different combos and see what’s happens. Pretty easy to tell when your nymph is too heavy for the dry (sinks immediately after it lands on the water). Hope the helps! 😎🤙🏽

    Good tip but since fly fishers say 'Match the hatch", you'd think it would almost be a no brainer to just rig up riverside 🤷‍♂️

  • @venturesflyco

    @venturesflyco

    Жыл бұрын

    Haha you would think so. A lot anglers fall into a rut where they just tie on the same flies every time without much thought. We’ve been guilty of it ourselves. 🤦🏽‍♂️😂

    @@venturesflyco or a fisherman has a favourite lure/fly/bait and just want to stick with using it most times but the fish want something different that day. We could miss a lot of fish by not paying attention and be willing to change it up. I know I'm bad for fishing the same spot for too long, not wanting to give up lol 😅

    Eyes and brain engage both before making that first cast. What worked yesterday last month or last year. Is not the best metric. Has there been rain during the night even a few miles upstream? More or less sunlight has the wind changed. So many things to consider. Cracking the code of what the fish are doing, what they want, recognising whatever changes are happening as they happen. Are the fish still taking the same hatching insects at the same stage of the life cycle. Pupa rising not hatching. Emerging. Adults returning. Spent dying adults. Are they still feeding on midges, or now are they olives, caddis, stonefly, corixa, are the fish now hitting fry or shrimp, bonus terrestrials? Miss any change and all you are doing is spooking the fish. That adult mayfly you spent ages getting it just right worked great in the calm of early June. Same spot in November with fish taking eggs and two inch long fry. Not ideal first choice on that later session.
