Don't Do DevOps (do this instead)!

Don't do "DevOps". Or Kubernetes. Or AWS.
Solve problems instead. You may use those tools to solve problems but you want to avoid having your name tied to a specific tool or technology.
- You'll miss out on other opportunities because you are pigeon-holed
- Eventually that tool will become obsolete, then you have to rebrand yourself
- Some of your best opportunities will come from customers and employers who don't know about the tools you use but are feeling the pain of the problem you solve

    Very good advice!! I love the idea of generalizing / abstracting accomplishments from the specific system they were related to!!

    So confusing. It is not like Do or do not Do DEVOPS. It is more like how to describe your skills I guess? Or It is like more do not limit your self to tools and instead promote your abilities without restricting to tools?

    Abilities. Showcase those because the things you can do with one toolset, you can do with any toolset.

    one should know devops as default thing in tech career cz the market is expecting that everyone should know something of everything aka full stack

    Thank you for the clarification. How do you solve problems.

  • @DevOpsForDevelopers

    @DevOpsForDevelopers

    That's a tough question. It depends on the problem but my overall approach is ask questions until I understand what the customer/client thinks the problem is, find out what it would look like if the problem didn't exist, then start brainstorming solutions to bridge that gap.

    But the problem is, at least where I live that many companies do look for specific tools, and eventually you’ll have to write in which tool you solved the problem with, it’s like in programming, they ask for a developer with two years experience with react but I have a developer in my team that is great with two years of experience in ruby on rails, but that company will not care in this case, but I do agree with your approach and I like it, but most companies focus very much on tools these days especially in this time of layoffs in the tech industry and it sucks. But we should still aim to do devops by solving problems correct? I was confused at the end if I should pursue a career change from automation testing to devops cause I find devops interesting and I feel that devops engineer is always at the top of the technologies and having knowledge in this field I think gives you a lot of powers and advantages even sometimes over developers/ co workers, for me it’s the curiosity on now things work, now do I do this and do that and connect all things together.

    Yeah, that's a valid point. Buzzword density on a resume is the critical to getting into the interview process. Whether that's the right approach or not doesn't matter, that's how our industry is. Longer term, I still advocate for solving problems because as you build your network and seniority in your career, you'll gain a reputation as a problem solver that people seek out, regardless of the tools you used to solve the problem.

    What should I do? I want to be a DevOps Engineer, and I l know basic of git, linux, go, docker and kubernetes. How should I move forward without getting stuck in the tutorial hell and actually contribute to some projects? If you please, I would like to get your advice Will.

  • @DevOpsForDevelopers

    Right on! The first thing to do is leverage your network (or build one if you don't have one). Find developers and entrepreneurs in your town starting new projects. Offer to do the DevOps for them & explain how this will help their company grow and succeed. Also, most of the tools you use are open source. Look for ways to contribute there: github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/labels/good%20first%20issue Those are all open issues for Kubernetes that are tagged as good issues for someone looking to contribute for the first time. Knock out a few of those and be sure to update your resume showing that you've contributed to open source projects.
