I have to agree with the earlier comment saying Elaine's take on this lovely song is far, far, better than Madonna's. She IS beautiful as is her performance. Whenever I feel immensely sad at mankind's inhumanity, beautiful music like this gives me hope.
Elaine has sung "Don't Cry for me Argentina" countless times with perfection ... but this performance at the ALW 25th Anniversary at Royal Albert Hall has got to be her finest performance ... her voice ... her projection ... her gestures ... the orchestra ... all synergize into something that will immortally endure well into the future ...

I saw Elaine Paige concert in Royal Albert Hall in the 80's. I had goosebumps and I felt the tears running down my cheeks when she sang Memory. Will never forget. From my stall I could see Tim Rice, Bjørn Ulvæus and Benny Anderson on the first row cheering. Amazing
She is amazing, the tone of her voice is just sublime. She actually tells a really funny story about her dress arriving literally minutes before she was due on stage for this performance and having to frantically run around the theatre to find her entrance. Her heart was thudding in her chest from exertion as she made her way down the stairs only for the stage hand to not have set the height for her mike correctly! You cant tell of course, she is the consummate pro❤

@@kboyer1 I honestly cannot remembet where i saw/heard it - it was some sort of interview where they mentioned or showed this clip and she went on to give that anecdote. She was laughing about it! Basically her dress was being custom made (designer ofc) and literally arrived about 15 mins before she was due on stage. So the costume lady was trying to alter her dress and get it on her, all the while they wre running about back stage trying to figure out where she makes her entrance. She said her heart was racing from exersion by the time she made her appearance and was walking down that staircase. Only to be dismayed that her mike wasnt at the right height!
To those who say of artistes that he/she is 'just' a musical theatre performer, not a real singer... Musical theatre requires so much of its performers; not only the ability to carry a tune but also the ability to tell a story and express emotion, often through no more than the most subtle tonal shift or catch in the voice--and to do it day in, day out, everyday and live every time. Elaine Paige is a star of the West End and a truly a great singer--as this video so amply demonstrates. Compare this live performance with the highly polished but ultimately bland and emotionless performance of the same song by Madonna in the film version.

This is my all time favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber song. The song is so haunting and the introduction of he soaring violins and then French horns is beautiful.
Towards the end, Elaine looks around surveying the theatre. It was a look that seemed to realize this might be the last time she would reenact her iconic role that she had performed on stage so many times for decades, and yet she nailed it. What a timelessly beautiful, triumphant, and perfect performance.
She's nailed that song! She is as beautiful as her gown, too. Loved her on Cats. Weber knows how to pick them.

I think she was 63 when she did this performance. Beautiful voice and a beautiful lady.
I was in middle school when my dad took me to Evita at the Kennedy Center.....fell in love with the Broadway after that.
I think this is the most beautifully girl and singer in the world.
