    The engine boost in Russia is market-specific because the engine is nerfed in the Russian version. Apparently taxes kick in if you have more than 100hp/L power-to-displacement ratio. The "boost" is more of a restoration. The 2024 version of the Tank 300 is supposed to come with GWM's 9AT hybrid gearbox from the Tank 500 and I've heard talk that there'll be an option for the 3.0 V6 from the 500 as well.

    Great job Dmitri, personalising these videos works well. Keep leaning into the dry humour! As a macro guy I see a huge problem with a lot of Chinese cars and the Tank is a perfect example. The price has run ahead of the value. Clearly the Tank (as other Chinese cars) is a really good thing but at $50,000 it is far too close the opposition in price whilst new. Right now while we still have an excess of liquidity this doesn't matter. Everyone has plenty of money, the alternatives are unavailable, so just buy it! The problem is as we go into a recessionary downturn and consumers cut back on discretionary spending, the inventories of all manufacturers will go up and prices will go down. This will mean that anyone who buys a new car can expect it to depreciate far quicker than we have seen for a few years. The problem for Chinese cars will be that their secondhand prices will collapse further as buyers will opt for better "value" competitors. The current example of this phenomenon is what is happening with Tesla. Inventories are growing, new prices are falling and secondhand prices have collapsed. The same thing will happen to Chinese cars in general as the recession really bites. So care is needed when buying one of these cars. If you are buying to hold long term then you do not lose a lot so it is probably worth the price. If, however, you expect to trade within 2-5 years then it is a dangerous bet.

  • @ValueCarsAU

    Exactly my thoughts, Darron, even though I still am leaning towards the side of the fence where the entry price matters, and e.g. in Tank 300 base $47k model you're getting same-ish (or better) creatures comforts level as you'd get in $60k+ Fortuner or (even more expensive) Prado? Don't think I'm not looking around before planning to sign another contract mate, depreciation is a very serious topic on my mind these days.

    @@ValueCarsAU In a perfect world where prices are stable the 47k Tank is better value than the 60k Fortuner. No point comparing Tank with Prado. The problem is when the market is flooded with Fortuners at 50k, what will Tank cost then? What will a secondhand Tank be worth? My argument is that this is when Tank will be a good buy. The Chinese are "making hay while the sun shines" now, can't blame them for that but any buyer now risks being a bagholder when prices turn South which, I think, they inevitably will.

  • @darroncrick9993

    @darroncrick9993

    @@jeremyyang9895 If this were Australia then no one would buy Tank, at 10k more the Ranger is a way safer bet. I can't speak for China but I would think this a pretty niche market for either vehicle. I am sure you know better than I but my experience of China is there are largely only 2 vehicle segments; luxury and practicality. I haven't been back to China since the start of covid but we have continued to bring in about a container a week of equipment which keeps us in pretty sweet with our suppliers over there. Watching the changes over the last 15 years of trade with China has been fascinating and largely profitable for all involved. I see clear political and trade issues brewing which are not good for smaller businesses like our suppliers and us. There is nothing any of us can do but try and adapt. This has been my overarching impression of Chinese business, just keep your head down and get on with it. 10 years ago I warned mainland friends off buying houses saying that renting made about a million % more sense and the status quo was unsustainable. The prevailing wisdom was that price only go up and if you don't buy now you never will. To me this was clearly nonsense as young people were already committing to a life of wage slavery to buy some shoebox back then. I watched as I was proven wrong for years until, over the last couple of years, the worm has turned. This is an unfolding tragedy for the Chinese populus, far greater than what is being reported. I can't see anyone winning from the current mess and it will be a drag on the Chinese psyche for decades. Capitalism gone mad in the home of Communism, fascinating and terrifying at the sametime. I know this is outside of car stuff but your comments, as an expat, would be interesting.

    @@darroncrick9993 In China, with 10K more than the price of tank300, you can get tank400 PHEV, with 37 kwh battery, combined 2.0T engine output 300kw, 750nm. Better and newer Borg-Warner 4WD/AWD transfer case than the Ranger V6 4WD/AWD. Front/Centre/Rear diff locks. 3.3KW elec power output. 110km pure elec range. And most important, Ute is not popular in China. So people would choose tank 400 or other cars rather than Ranger.

    This is not a family vehicle, It's for young people who properly doesn't have kids or need for the rear seats which can be folded flat down to make a bed ..

    Debatable. Of course it's not a 7 seater, but not only 7 seaters are "family vehicles" or camping-friendly in general.

    chinese IC cars are always underpowered, try tank 300 phev version or the new tank 700 phev with 3.0 v6

    We don't have Tank 700, but Tank 300 HEV drives quite nicely. Aside from the "mother-in-law" driver monitoring system.
