Don't Buy A Subaru STI In 2024 Without Watching This!

I wanted to share my experience when shopping for an STI and help others to make sure they are not paying ridiculous, bogus fees. Ultimately, I ended up with a new 2021 STI which was likely one of the last off the production line. Do your research and don't fall victim to any hidden dealer markups.

    I've had my 2019 STI Limited for almost 4 years now. Car was good off the lot but adding Fortune Auto 500 coil-overs, 18" Titan7 Forged Wheels reduced weight and made it great. Car feels quicker, drives smoother and is more enjoyable to drive now. I also added an IAG AOS and the cylinder 4 cooling mod for some added reliability and a strut tower brace to stiffen the front. I won't go any further with mods for now. The STI is the only car I know that comes with 6 piston Brembo brakes in the front and 4 piston in the back, has hydraulic steering, 3 LSD's and AWD. It's a one of a kind car and cars like this aren't coming back so if you always wanted one, you might want to get one now. The STI is more of a weekend fun car for me and I just hit 17k miles. Unless I need extra money, I don't see a time when I would sell it.

    Thank you for this well informed video, currently have a Lexus sc300 and it’s a good cruiser just not a fun car to take on any fun roads for its not intended for that kinda use. Reading your feed backs about the Sti answered all the questions I had about reliability issues and how the style of driving I wanna do wouldn’t effect the car. I simple want a car that’s fun rides nice and feels sporty and a car that’s quick but nothing to crazy and not a car I intend to be racing with. this year I hope to be in one ☝️

    I bought mine at MSRP since it was new which at the time seemed like a good deal considering the market. These cars have taken about a 8-10% hit over the past 4 months as most of the vehicles are starting to come down in price and will continue to do so. I’d look for a fair deal and definitely not pay any mark up or add to these scum bag dealers. More and more cars on the market now. If you can be patient you’ll be able to find the right car. Good luck!

    Well they’re also the last ones with an EJ motor and there hasn’t been any news about a new STI. They won’t come down too much. They did try to sell me all that extra stuff when I bought my 2020 STI.

  • @steveswiat

    @steveswiat

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah they have dropped about 8-10% since I made this video. It is not just as simple as the fact they don’t make STIs anymore. Supply and demand is a much greater factor and there is an increasing amount t of inventory of all used cars, a recession and record high interest rates and inflation which has led to a dried up pool of buyers. I expect the prices to decline at a normal decoration curve for the foreseeable future It’s interesting this topic seems to get some people worked up (not suggesting you are) but so many people have been deluded into thinking average cars are an investment for them but in reality they will definitely continue losing value just like 99% of other vehicles. Sounds like you got a good deal and didn’t pay any extra stuff. Great!

    The only thing i would disagree with is the private party sale. Go with certified pre owned, meaning sold by subaru. They will only buy fully stock models and and will have 152 point inspection including a 100k mile powertrain warranty. Private parties only sell these cars when they know they have juiced it to its limits.

    STI is one of the best cars out there that hold their value. I had a 2015 STI i got new back in 2015 for $36k, i traded it in for an RS3 in 2020 and the dealer gave me $32k trade in equity for it and tbey sold it for $35k a few days later. The car literally lost $1k in value over 5 years.

    Another important thing to know that most people miss is $35k in 2015 is not close to same purchasing power as $35k in 2023. So it may not feel like you technically lost money you did lose a lot of purchasing power.

    With some recent opportunities in my life, I've been looking to trade in my daily driver. I'm very grateful that my economy SUV has taken care of me, but with the direction of the automotive industry going towards "electric cars," I can honestly say I'm upset. I want to get into something that's engaging to drive and the GR Corolla originally had my attention. AWD, manual, and hatchback? Exactly what I'm looking for. However, the local dealer near me has the base trim (which starts at 37,000) USED, asking for FIFTY THOUSAND. And it seems that the Circuit (the trim I want) isn't even available in my area. After some thought, I was looking at the new WRX but I'm not fond of the styling. Then it was suggested to me to look into the STI. Decent examples that havent been modified mechanically are going for around 40 to 46 in my area. Some other examples that have reported to be in an accident are going for high 30's but there's no way I'm buying a car that's been in an accident. I suppose I'll just wait. But it is one of my dreams to be able to row through gears and just feel the exhilaration and thrill from a proper sports car.

    @Calebmar Congratulations! I hope it arrives soon for you, haha. Will you update me on what it's like to own one in the future? You know, I have seen that you can buy paint matched cladding/trim pieces and also there is an STI style wing that you can put on there too. But there is something I heard about the new WRX generation engines where people have been finding RTV gasket sealant in their oil/oil pan? I also remember searching for the 2018-2021 STI's and they also had a recall for the reverse light malfunctioning because water may get into the wires and corrode them and prevent them from working? It also reminds me of the 2012-2017 Subaru WRX engine recall lawsuit where people would have engine failure from the metal pieces cycling in their oil too. All these recalls and problems are steering me away from Subaru. I think I might just wait in the GR Corolla since they're continuing production into 2024. It'll give me some time to stack more chips and hopefully have a better chance of getting the Circuit Edition.

    Add $10k minimum to the sale price of every STI because you're going to pay for at least one motor replacement. And if you build, that figure is more like minimum $20k, just in parts. Its slow AF stock (240whp, 3500lbs) and the STI is very expensive to try to make real power. At the end of the day the STI is a car that you have to buy twice. First you buy the car, then you spend the same amount to buy the mods and repairs. Once you go through all that you have a decent car, but its still not nearly as nice as the brand new loaded M3 you could have bought with the same money.

  • @steveswiat

    @steveswiat

    Жыл бұрын

    Ya you are right it is not fast. Still a fun car to drive around as a daily. I don’t have any intention of modifying it and cost is not a concern for me tbh. I would not expect an STI with M3 performance to be very enjoyable for what I do with the car and the reliability would likely suffer. My goal is to strictly pound miles on the car for fun driving to cool places. Thanks for the comment!

  • @dumpjeep

    @dumpjeep

    Жыл бұрын

    @@steveswiat the only real reliability problem is the rod bearings. The clearances are too tight which causes them to overheat during sustained high RPM loads (5th gear pulls). This bearing damage will occur regardless of power levels since it is not related to power levels, but rather by engine speed/duration. Subaru even settled a class action lawsuit over this a few years back, and then turned around and continued using the same exact tight bearing clearances. So its actually likely going to be a little more reliable at higher power levels with a properly assembled aftermarket engine in there than with the stock bottom end. And babying it to 'save the motor' defeats the point of owning a sporty car. People should only buy these cars if theyre going all the way with the building. I think of it like you're buying a platform, and then you have to build on it because the stock bits are trash.

  • @steveswiat

    @steveswiat

    Жыл бұрын

    @@dumpjeep Interesting... I defintely don't like babying it, so far we have 10k miles without any issues. Granted it is not a track car so it isn't seeing super heavy use but this would not be my first choice for racing. I would totally disagree that people should only buy an STI with the intention of building all the way LOL. I would say personally say the exact opposite if you want to actually enjoy the car. I wouldn't buy an STI with the intention of being fast, I bought it because its a well-rounded sports car that is inexpensive and offers what I was looking for. There is also the nostaglic factor for me because I owned a stage 2 STI about 11 years ago and that car was one of my favorites. I have no doubt this car will serve its purpose well for me. After collectively putting over 150k trouble free miles on various STIs/Subarus it seems that most of issues are due to user error.

    And today, they have not come down in value. And the reason? They stopped making them. A very good condition late model STi is desirable. The longer time passes, and the ones that have not been over-modded will continue to accrue value. Look at ANY performance car from whatever era, and the good condition ones sell at a higher price. Since the STi is often beaten on by younger drivers, it naturally makes the well-taken-care-of ones more scarce, and thus more desirable. Key word is "stock." So I don't think the prices will come down, and 43k for a good one, 18-21, is reasonable.

  • @steveswiat

    That is an interesting observation but my car has dropped significantly in value since this video. My car is also in virtually mint condition and bone stock - 2021. It is down to around $36k for trade-in now and would private party sale around $40k. My car has lost around 7-10% since the making of this video. Also, there are way more economic factors at play than just the fact that they stopped making them. Your average American is flat broke right now with inflation and with 7%+ interest rates the pool of buyers dried up fast. It is a supply-and-demand game. Cars don't just hold value unless the market can support them and STIs have been dropping just as everything else has. I think a super clean, low mile 04-06 model will be the pinnacle of what a "classic" STI goes for in the next 5-10 years.
