    Rolex is a bit like MacDonalds burgers, as in addition to being a great quality product also have a catchy and recognizable name, and an equally classy and eyecatching logo, associated with upper class/royalty (not sure if that apply with MacDonalds though!). Same with MaCallan Whisky, the name is important, there are many whisky brands that are equally as good as MaCallan, but have not seen anywhere near the price increase on the older bottlings. Not nessecary much better than the competition but the combination makes people want it more then what the competition can offer, so when demand is higher than the supply we know what happens. And Rolex got another advantage, that it's not a public company, meaning they will not have "the shareholders" breathing down their neck with pressure to this or that, with a duty to open their accounts etc. Same as f.ex Ikea, which would never had the success they have now if it was listed as a public company. That Rolex is sorrounded with secrets and mysthic also helps as everyone is speculating not only what they will do but also why they did things in the past, as hardly any information ever get to be public. Also Omega watches are generally not as good looking in terms of design as Rolex, of course there are good looking Omega's and bad looking Rolex, but I would say at least from my point of view this is part of the reason I own more Rolex watches than Omega watches, of course also to do with the expectation that Rolex nearly always keep it's value but most Omega watches do not. Still, everything concidered my vintage Omega Speedmaster's are my favorite watches in terms of pure interest and passion. And having said all that, the Seamaster showed in this video is in my opinion almost ugly with it's wavy dial and the clumsy bezel, but of course, many will find it to be very pretty, just not me, and I suspect many will agree with me on that one....

Models like the Rolex Sub just look bland in my opinion, yes the value increases but I buy watch to wear and enjoy. So for me, Omega wins hands down, the level of detail on the SMP 300 just blows the Sub away. Ultimately though, each to their own and most importantly, simply enjoy Horology😊

    I’ve had this model for close to a year now and although nothing is perfect it’s pretty darn close!!! Most of the things I would change or adjust in the design are on the bracelet the watch is brilliant!!! An unexpected bonus for the owner is if you are relaxing, in a quiet place with it close to your ear you can hear it sing !!! There is a resonance that comes from the coaxial escapement that sounds like a chime or tiny bell …..that is really quite ….enchanting !!!!

    Omega had the edge on Rolex in the Sixties with watches like the 565. These were phenomenal movements. Over the Seventies Omega fell by the wayside with really the Speedmasters and Constellations carrying them. The old 1120 seamasters were pedestrian mid price offerings. Omega got the idea of going up market from Rolex and fir the last twenty years they’ve tried the trick of stratospheric price increases and Antiquorum auctions. I suppose it’s worked in the sense Rolex has responded by just making their watches unobtainable, driving speculation on even modern models, which is nuts. Rolex makes like 800,000 watches a year. There’s nothing remotely rare about them. Even my favorite watch, the 5513 has at least half a million entries. Nothing either company has done has helped the average watch guy looking to get a cool watch fir a decent price. Omega was great as a mid priced offering of well made watches. Losing them there has really hurt the average consumer. I suppose that’s the way it goes in one of the dirtiest businesses on earth.

    Interesting, educational. Not in the market for either watch but found the history of the brands very informative. I have also heard that Rolex also got some of their movements from Zenith, is that true? If so, Rolex has attained a measure of desirability off the backs of these other brands making them not much different then Hublot which watch enthusiasts tend to hate for some reason. I wore a pre-moon Speedmaster with a rubber band during my tour in Viet Nam and it still runs great. I mainly own Breitlng's regardless of all this fluff. What irritates me is paying big bucks for any watch that uses pins and not screws for it's spare links and for many years they used cheap hollow lug links. Accuracy is a moot point unless you want to constantly pay big bucks every few years for servicing. I have over 15 Breitling's and granted many use a standard Valjjoux 7750 movement and some use others that are generally not made in-house. Why would anyone expect absolute accuracy from a manual or auto mov't? You can buy a nice cheap Citizen or Seiko watch that doesn't need batteries and is more accurate then any Swiss mov't. People like me that are addicted to nice watches could care less if it gains or losses 10 seconds a day. I have a all 18k Rolex GMT I bought in the mid-80's and have never serviced it once and it's sticks close to 5 seconds a day and that's fine by me.

  • @nautaki

    @nautaki

    Жыл бұрын

    I also happen to find that the Breitling collection has aged better too. I recently bought a mint Colt GMT, it is from 2005 and it looks fresh like a daisy. I put my Omega Speedmaster Auto in the closet and it hasn't seen the light of day since. Even more hardcode watch manufacturers like IWC occasionally release something more youthful like the plastiki ingenieurs or the climate action ones (I really want one of those). Omega is just variations of the same thing with more premium materials that inevitably make the watch more suitable to older people. Imagine a 70 year old wearing a rose gold Seamaster (a diver's watch...) doesn't sound right.

    Your videos are really great. I was not aware that Rolex had a better performing and higher reserve calibre than Omega despite the co-axial escapment and high-tech materials. Omega should try to improve further on both then. Did you ever look at the Comex - Rolex collaboration ? It is a nice chapter of horological history. Comex was the first commercial diving company founded by Henri Germain Delauze and they had a long collaboration with Rolex to develop the diving watches which they issued to their divers. Each watch back was engraved with the staff number. I don't know for sure but it may be the reason why Rolex diving watches are not developped to look fancy as in essence they mostly remain diving tool watches. I dont have a Rolex but I am buying an Omega Seamaster 007 titanium over titanium.
