Don't Buy A Generator Until You See This Monster!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is currently the most powerful portable inverter generator you can buy for backup power. Is this the perfect backup generator for your home? It has one great feature if you use an interlock like I do for your generator connection. This is the GENMAX GM10500iETC Tri Fuel Inverter Generator. With 10,500 watts of power available this generator delivers monster power for backup power in an emergency. Is it a Honda killer? I don't know but it definitely eats the Predator up.

    I bought a firman generator a few years back after losing $500 worth meat in my freezer. I hated spending $1,000 on something that would mostly live in my shed. Turns out we lost power about 6 times that year. The best $1,000 I ever spent.

    Somewhat similar take on this end. My existing generator was giving me hell and power outages can last days or weeks after big hurricanes. So, I went to stores (that Google said were closed) and found the last one HD had in-stock, just before someone else walked up to it. I didn’t sweat the price because my thinking was that the price jump isn’t any worse than ALL the food we’d lose in the fridge and freezer PLUS keeping the family comfortable. No brainer. Now, I want to see what the details are on this “beast”.

    Great video: I currently just set up a pair of WEN 12kW dual fuels for a customer of mine... 24kW max spike output. One thing that I would suggest as a small engine mechanic over almost three decades. ...the break in oil should never be synthetic. Conv oil run over two hours works much better to set the rings.

    My approach is different: I go with the smallest generator that will meet my maximum basic need, anticipating that fuel may be hard to get, and smaller generators typically use less fuel. And they’re going to be quieter. Living in Alaska, I don’t want my pipes to freeze in the winter, so I need to power the circulating pump on the gas boiler. Put food outside, don’t need a fridge. Maybe power a couple of lights. In the summer, I don’t need heat or lights, but do need the fridge. Propane keeps indefinitely, so better than gas, and doesn’t clog up the carburetor, but is less efficient. Easily stored. I agree, don’t use gas in it, except for initial testing, then run it dry, drain the carb bowl, and later run your periodic tests with propane after that. Having a generator can be very useful, but keeping it it’s box until you need it on a cold, dark, windy, wet night without any break-in period or familiarity, or test runs, and without knowing more or less specifically what you really want to accomplish, and not having all the infrastructure in place, may make for a less than desired experience. Having the natural gas option with the tri-fuel setup is ideal. Have a plumber run a gas line for you, using quick disconnects. In all of our power outages over the years, the gas has never been out, so in theory we have an endless supply of fuel. But there’s no guaranty of that, so have plenty of fuel (propane is my suggestion) stored away. And however much you have stored, when the time comes that you need it, you’ll probably wish you had more. And for a long term outage, my fuel will be reserved for cooking and purifying water, not running a generator to power the house, if need be.

    I like your philosophy on back up power. If we have lots of rain, I need to power my sump pump to keep the basement from filling up with water. But, I plan to install a battery operated backup pump. That way I can run the generator periodically to recharge the battery. I can rum the genny as needed for heating or cooling and for the fridge. Batteries will do for lighting and again charge those when running the genny for some other reason. This is not as convenient as the automatic whole house systems, but much cheaper to buy and operate, and makes the fuel last longer.

  • @InspiredCraftsman

    I'm of the same philosophy. I have a small diesel generator sized to carry just critical loads. I also have sensitive electronics and fridges on small ups units. Keeps them running through the change over to the generator and cleans up any voltage or frequency fluctuations from the generator.

  • @jmackinjersey1

    @jmackinjersey1

    As someone that has tried the "little as possible" method, I'll tell you that that is a fools errand approach. You'll make your generator run harder, longer. I've grown up and lived on the Gulf coast, where hurricanes and major storms come through quite often, which means zero electricity for days and weeks, or even months. Get one that will power your entire house, and then add 10%, something like a 13000. When your smaller generator is running full force, it is drinking as much gas as it possibly can. However, if you are able to hit the low idle switch and the house is still electrified, then your generator is much more efficient, and not sucking as much gas as it is WOT. Also, instead of buying the smaller, refillable bottles that you hook up to the grill, you can always get larger tanks and have the truck swing by and fill it. The fuel in those will last a long time.

  • @InspiredCraftsman

    @InspiredCraftsman

    9 ай бұрын

    @jmackinjersey1 are you referring to natural gas/propane or diesel gensets? The diesel units last longer when worked hard. Too much idle time or light loads can cause excessive engine wear. If your needs are 4-7,000 watts, then run a 7,000 watt genset. Why run a 14,000 watt unit? The smaller generator is also a lot more fuel efficient. Without rationing running 5,000 watt load, the kubota gl7000 will burn about 10-12 gallons a day. The gl14000 will burn 15-17 gallons carrying the same load. A 250 gallon fuel tank will get you 2 weeks of power using the gl14000 and over 3 weeks with the gl7000.

I"m actually thinking of buying that one now. I own one from a couple years back that is still like brand new is the predator 8750/7000. I use it on an interlock system in my breaker box and when not in use I use it in the garage to run my mig welder and plasma cutter. This generator works to power my mig and plasma cutter when they throw my breaker on the 110V electrical outlets if used over like 20- 30 seconds.

    Hello Haxman XTRA ! Very impressive informative/video. Thanks. I wish I could use the ATS as well but like you I cannot. Your right about the names of these gen’s! LOL. The only one I can figure out is the i for inverter. Your Bonding plug for your floating neutral Gen. Is when you want to use just an extension cord to power something. You plug that Bonding plug into one of your 20amp receptacles and Generator is now Bonded. Remove it when using your Power inlet plug of course. You want it floating. I own a AiPower GSX7100iRD Duel fuel, i as well only use Propane. If I use propane and had gasoline in it, it would automatically switch over to the gas. Very long run time. I also only have/use an Interlock which I love. Mine has recoil/electric start/Remote. It’s about 63db. It has a floating neutral as yours does also. Quality and features are amazing. Everything you have except the 50amp plug and the charging port. I connected a NOCO 2amp Charger/Tender/Maintainer to mine. NOCO makes a great product. 7100 watts divided by 240 volts = 29.58 Amps. Yours is 12000 watts divided by 240volts = 50amp. Mine unit is 6 months old. Check out all the features on mine you will be impressed at just $999 at Costco. Now they have one for $1299 with that charging port you have. AiPower just came out with the AiPower SUA7600iED on Amazon for$1499-$100 coupon $1399. I would have looked into that one as well over mine. It has 500 more watts. Mine runs 2 refrigerators, Boiler and water storage tank, Sump pump, all lights(LED’s), WiFi, Router, TV’s and some small ac window units. It’s sick. It has a drain tube to drain fuel in storage mode if you use gas. I wanted to share my unit to yours for your Fans that do not need 12000 watts. Your unit looks great. Great luck with it and your channel. Everyone give him a thumbs up, heck I’ll take one to please if you like my comments. Please subscribe to HAXMAN’s channel. All the best Haxman, you and family. From my experience this is far bigger than most people need to run a mid sized home. My home has never taken more than 4000 watts continuous to run everything including an air conditioner but yours might vary. The other major consideration is noise; if you care about your neighbours, this might end up driving them nuts as my experience with generators (I own four) is that the Honda and other high end conventional inverters are very quiet even at 10 feet away. But for the price, this genny and it's bigger brother seems to be good value for the money

People are actually doing this now, EdisonMotors is using a diesel engnie to power a full electric drive truck, very little battery needed as its not the main source of mileage.

    This is the second video today I’ve seen an outside breaker panel. In the last video I commented that I’d never seen one before. I guess I can’t say that here. I’m still curious though, why? I’m in central illinois. Is it a warm vs cold weather thing? Seems tampering would be a problem:

  • @brianhope5853

    When the power is out, so is the power at gas and propane locations, at least in my area. One of the ratings that would be most helpful in choosing a generator/invertor would be fuel usage in pints per hour at 80% or 90% load. Why do they give us usage at 50% load while we are trying to size the gen to our usage? Manufacturers list 50% load but do not tell us at what throttle percentage the unit is operating at. Fuel usage is not proportional to load.

    Yes the T07571 says it IS a bonded neutral. The manuals will often have instructions on how to convert to a floating neutral for when connecting to an inlet plug on the house. However from the Firman website for this generator I could not find any instructions on how to disconnect theirs. I have two older Champions. One came Floating the other Bonded. For mine it was a jumper wire between two terminals under the power head cover.

    These types of videos should come with a disclosure statement. Most people hear the words whole house backup, that is not a 100% true. You were running 4500 watts with the water pump on if you would have kicked In the water heater, you would have tripped the gen breaker. If you would have turned on your stove it would have tripped the gen. Breaker. Even running the microwave at the same time as the ac unit could trip the gen breaker. A 9kw gen running watts is only 37.5 amps at 240v. Most 3ton AC units pull about 24 amps or 6000 watts and the surge amps can be 6 times that. Not trying to down play your video or push people against buying a portable gen, these are great units for a temporary situation. Just know they have there limitations and that you can't back up everything on your 200 amp panel with a 50 amp generator.

    10KW is plenty to be considered whole home. Check with your electric company and they'll say your usage 95% of the time is less than 10KW. Any one of the items you say would trip the generator breaker wouldn't do so by themselves and is unlikely you would use them all at the same time. Maybe you would need to think don't take a shower while the air conditioner is running or don't use the microwave while someone else is frying eggs. But it's close enough
