GC might been "shortlived" in comparison of other systems of the generation, but for some people it might been a console that became something special for them, like being their first console. Also any opportunity to avoid Wii's motion controls, even for just browsing the Wii menu, is a win.

  • @FyreWulff

    @FyreWulff

    No problem. The short version is for rollback you need to store copies of the match state in RAM. So every frame, the game is saving a snapshot of the RAM values used by the match. These snapshots are what is actually "rolled back" to when it needs to go back to a known good frame if it guesses wrong. This gets more complex the more variables there are in the match, and Melee is complex due to the fact that it has to track items, stage animations, etc. Modern games can account for this RAM usage, but on GameCube Melee is using pretty much all the RAM. So there's not enough space to put those previous frames to roll back to. Slippi can do it because you have to run it on a PC, and since the GameCube only had 24MB of RAM there's plenty of spare RAM on modern PCs to brute force saving frames to roll back to. @@PERSONALEEMG

    Yeah, THE big con for me is that this uses Serial Port 2. Some people have DOL-001s that lack Serial Port 2, and DOL-101s pretty much all lack it completely. Meanwhile my SP1 is completely empty and unused, and I have no reason to put an M.2 Loader in there as I have a GC Loader HW2. I'd love a broadband adapter replacement that goes in SP1. I LOVE the concept of expanding GameCube with online support patches though. I could just imagine a sophisticated online matchmaking feature being added to Mario Kart: DD that matches MK Wii's (as opposed to direct connection), for example. Nintendont on the Wii is also capable of emulating the Broadband Adapter support using Wi-Fi, so the overall accessibility of GameCube Online should improve with time.

    Honestly speaking, it'd be pretty cool to get this working with the other serial port that the official adaptor used, just to give people more options with how they use Swiss. This would work great with the m.2 adaptor project, but a version that uses the other port for people with the set up like you have for booting Swiss. But the fact it works at all is awesome.

    When I think we done everything with the Gamecube...someone just do a brand new mod that awesome ! And this one is a need one, like the GCvideo project ! The Price is great, it does what the real Broadband adapter do but with more "homebrewish" stuff, the only downside imo, it's this ETH2GC use the Serial Port 2 and not the Serial Port 1. So all user that use the SD2SP2 have to found another way to use Swiss. Maybe a Serial Port 1 version can be make later, and I suppose it's also because the community have better knowledge of how the Serial Port 2 work. After saw that, I thinking that a new Broadband adapter can be do for the Dreamcast as a replacement of the Original Broadband adapter that expensive to, but I think the projet need more stuff, to do incompatibility with games that only work with Modem and not with Broadband ! Great video ^_^ !

  • @eDoc2020

    The required cable depends on the specific hardware. It will probably require the same cable type as the original BBA or an old PC. Realistically it doesn't matter because most modern equipment auto-adapts to the cable type. If your setup has a network switch from the past 20 years either cable will be fine.

    I'm not particularly confident in my own capabilities with soldering and modding and I'm kinda broke, so the fact that i have a newer revision of the DOL-001 which doesnt have the serial port necessary for this mod is a huge blow. Makes me feel like I wasted my time with this particular GameCube being modded, since the convenience of this mod for ripping my own games. I'll have to wait for the M.2 loader to be able to load Swiss and for this project to be able to be utilized via the memory card slot before I can get the whole thing working close to optimally, and even then, it'll look likely far less clean than an original DOL-001 with the full kit. I'm not mad at Extrems or WebHDX or anything here, i just didn't know what was going on with my own GameCube til my friend who did the modding for me showed me what was up with my model. To quote a great show, "That's rough, buddy."

    The cons are that both versions take up space on the *side* of the Gamecube (would be nice to have it on the back). Also that it takes up the SP2 slot so you can’t have an SD card there. But I absolutely LOVE that this is a thing. I have BBA’s for all my Gamecubes and I’ve been missing online support in the homebrew scene. Hoping this will spark a flame on that front😄
