Honestly they were the best live band I have ever seen. You got exactly what it said on the tin with Slade. Incidentally, coincidentally I bumped into Don Powell (maybe 2003 - I have the photos. I got down on my knees and thanked him before I got up and kissed him on the cheek. I dont do this!! Absolutely true.) and he told me that when they were touring Australia and the tour bus unfortunately hit a kangaroo. They stopped. Don Powell ... if you ever read this ... ??? ... In 1975 my late Dad took me to see Slade in Bristol Colston Hall ... and i was only 10 years old !!! ... It was within the same weeks that you launched "Thanks For The Memories" !!! ... You ran on the stage from the right with a giant packet of "Wrigleys Spearmint Gums" !!! ... I remember as if yesterday and your second song was "Far Far Away" and it was almost impossible to separate the fact that i was not listening just with headphones as the rendition was just so perfect !!! ... My poor dad felt faint and we had to leave after only 3 songs :-( ... But ???... Not only was the music great ... Noddy Holders loud confident voice when he spoke to the audience ... The color in the dress of your group on stage ... (everyone was in denims) LOL ... But you all were a "VERY VERY HIGH QUALITY GROUP OF GENTLEMEN" !!!!! ... Many Thanks Again !!!

For such a light weight forgettable programme, Matt Allwright does a great interview by actually allowing Don Powell to speak and not trivialising anything - good job from both of you. Thank goodness you cut Baddiel off when you did - Slade considered a bit of a comedy band???!!! Proof if ever needed that tv should just let minor celebs stick to their day-job. He's not a Pop/Rock Historian, he's not a musician, but they let these people hold forth as if they are an authority on everything. Far better to listen to younger generation of musicians to see how Slade influenced them.

He came into Halfords and bought a new battery for it.. And he asked me if I would fit it for him. I looked out of the window and it was snowing quite hard so I said no mate we don't do that lol this was early 70s.. In the 80s Noddy holder came into the lawnmower repair shop in Bilston where I then worked and asked me to repair his mom's hedge trimmer which I did... I saw Dave Hill every day in 82 at new Cross hospital Wolverhampton cos his misses had a baby the same time my misses did...
My youth, great band then and now,
Absolutely wonderful group.. wonderful real people.i hope they make their peace, and i say love and peace to all peoples,,don't hold grudges ,,forgive and forget, honestly life is to short, just like me, and I have had some sorrowful times and experiences, but these real honest Wolverhampton lads ,,gave a great deal of pleasure to us,and I still have there LPS ,memories , wonderful,,love and peace to everyone, help your neighbour and the stranger,it could be me, or Noddy ,Dave, don or Jim,, god bless,

God bless you Don. We will always love you friend ❤
My band as a teenager brilliant 🤩
Shortly after his accident, I was in a restaurant with a friend on Finchley Road near Swiss Cottage and Don Walks in ,sits down and orders a meal.It seemed strange at the time to see him there.I didn't speak to him.I thought that he would probably rather be left alone.

Spent a bit of time with Don in the UK last December and he certainly is the most loveliest man, so is Dave who was so friendly. They seem surprised I flew from Australia to see 5 concerts in the UK but it was my lifetime dream to see them, to actually spend time with them was an added bonus. I'll die happy now.

Great band..had the honour of supporting them on German tour in 1977 for two gigs...
Slade were immense! My days early 70s with Bowie, Bolan n The Sweet.
Don's a great drummer! In addition to Slade, he's doing a great job as a member of QSP (Quatro, Scott & Powell).
legend
I can’t believe that Dave Hill has now stopped him playing in the Slade band. He just sent an email to say he wasn’t needed anymore, absolute disgrace. All the best Don
jim ,dave and noddy are fantastic men stuck by don ,put was a career heading for the very top on pause ,classy guys
Awww man. Love Slade
Good interview nice guy
How sad when you see his emotion when he recollects his girlfriends death all those years before
Great reminiscence!
God bless you Don
Great interview and what a nice man.
Don powell. The greatest rock and hardest drummer in the business.
Oh, man! I know about the accident but I've never heard about this!!! I'm loss for words!
When you have success beyond your wildest dreams and then in an instant it can be wiped out in an instant and in the most tragic of circumstances.
This Man inspired me to play the drums. I was totally into listening to his playing, but I was so young that I didn’t know what to do and my parents wouldn’t let me have a drumkit 😊
I remember reading about Don been in that car accident that was terrible for him how sad although i wasn't a slade fan but i did like them i did have a few records of theirs in my record collection

I would like to have heard what Baddiel said. I suspect he was going on to say about Slade's greatness despite the glam tag or talk about how great a live band they were. Shame it cuts off before he could qualify what he was saying. I didn't see the original programme so I don't know for sure. Can anyone recall instead of us all making our minds up from the beginning of a sentence that is cut off.
Великий человек DON!!!
Great band👍
Great Drummer Great Band ..I wish him well all normal decent guys who hit the big time
most no.1's in the 1970's....six....
Slade came to my salon not long after that terrible accident , Don was very withdrawn but I saw how supportive the rest of the group were “ true friendship “

As a barman in Finchley Don had lost not only memory but also his taste buds, he used to ask me what he should drink, I'd usually pick wine, lovely guy
Oh my god I never knew this 😭❤ bless him what a badass!!! Don was gorgeous in the 70s 😍
Raw very raw
Does he remember that he used to live at thorn cottage ninfield rd near lunsford cross, north of sidley ,bexhill. east sussex, when my late father-in-law lived at thorn lodge farm next door, ? as the interview was at eastbourn pier not that far away
He was trying not cry when he mentioned his gf being killed bless him
❤👍👏👏👏
would've been good English fun to tell Don he also became a footballer and that he scored the winning goal in the FA cup that year, and kept it going for a while...
Dons mother used to work in Cambells chip shop in Bilston and her sister was mother to the girl I worked with at Halfords in Bilston.. When Don had his mini.. before the accident this was.. Oh and going back to the 70s our cleaning lady at Halfords was sister to dave hills mother.. Just thought I would share that with you all 😅

In a weird way the amnesia probably helped. He doesn't remember the accident and the horror of what happened to his fiance. I'm not saying it's all good of course it isn't. But I think I'd rather forget that tragedy than remember. But it affects his whole life so on the other hand it's shit. Kind of a mixed blessing I'd say
