This song give me chills. An important line, “Portraits hung in empty halls.” His most expensive painting sold for 85 million dollars, after his death, of course. His paintings are in every art book in school. He is so important to art, and never knew it.

Thank you for this thoughtful and educated review. Don McLean is said to have written this song while still in high school, waiting for the school doors to open, on a paper bag. It seems probable that Van Gogh suffered from bipolar disorder, in a time when there was no effective treatment.

Don is a brilliant poet who puts his poems to music. Listen to Empty Chairs. That one will make you cry. Guaranteed. He is from my era. His poetic inference makes you look into yourself and feel for others. In this era of selfishness and Societies his words are reflective and contemplative.

Vincent Van Gogh was one of the greatest artists who ever lived. There's a scene in an episode of the British Sci-Fi TV show "Doctor Who" that illustrates it well. The Doctor brought Vincent through time to a modern exposition of his work. He asked one of the attendees at the show what he thought of Van Gogh's work. The upside was that Van Gogh was one of the greatest artists of all time because he took the pain of his life and used it to create transcendent beauty. This is so very true. I love his work.

Most of Van Gogh's work was done when he was in recovery periods from his mental illness. And so I have to wonder what more beauty the world was robbed of because the state of mental health care back then was so very poor. Had he been able to get more effective help, what more beauty could he have created? We'll never know.

One of his paintings was sold in 1992 for $75 MILLION dollars ! Vincent suffered from epilepsy which, in that time, wasnt really understood and he was considered a freak. He finally shot himself in the stomach and spent two days dying, in pain. McLean is a brilliant poet and has an amazing ability to communicate his feelings. I can clearly see the images he paints with his words.

Vincent van Gogh would not take charity, he would ask people to buy his paintings. But a lot of people would not buy them. His brother would buy his paintings through a third-party, that way Vincent wouldn’t know about it, but that way he would get money,

Actually, there is a debate going on now that he was shot by his brother or someone else. to me, from the evidence I've seen online is that, as tormented as he was, he didn't kill himself! No one shoots themself in the stomach and then goes looking for help... The reason they think it might have been his brother is that he didn't want to get him in trouble and so he said he did it himself. Quite a guy if true...!!!

Van Gogh is reported to have had bipolar disorder, Meniere’s disease (condition of the inner ear resulting in acute, violent attacks of vertigo and hallucinations of rotary motion), thujone poisoning (interfering with the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, causing mood elevating effects) from his consumption of absinthe to counteract his attacks of epilepsy, anxiety, and depression. A sick man, and a damn shame! They recently found complex musical compositions, some complete, some not, written by Nazi concentration camps prisoners while in these death camps. Through hunger, torture, and the constant threat of death they wrote their music about and through their suffering. The human mind and spirit is paradoxically both delicate, and yet overwhelmingly & phenomenally powerful!

Few know of his compassionate work as a layman evangelist among the poverty stricken poor among miners in a small village in Belgium. He had an immense heart that was broken many times in his life. When the visiting bishops saw Vincent at work among the miners, they were shocked and embarrassed that he looked as poor as they and promptly prohibited him from preaching and feeding them under their auspices. His brother, seeing his brother fail at something he had put his heart into, suggested he develop his artistic talents, as primitive as they were. His Art became a treasure to the world, but during his brief life, his paintings were his only consolation. His attempts at friendship and love were ultimately rejected. "A silver thorn, a bloody rose... lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow." Beauty from ashes is the nature of his story.

In his lifetime Vincent sold a single painting and was largely unknown until just weeks before his death when the art critics were starting to take notice.
