This is brilliant and I admit it went over my head. Fanucci threatens to go to the cops? Then says ok you stole, but I'll take less. Vito knew then that Fanucci was full of bull. If he's this powerful Don why not send a soldier to make the hit? Why not rough him up hard, you got till tomorrow to pay up. No Don is going to demand payment then take less. I think he was claiming connection to the old country.

The manner in which he uses it, he meant countryman but in the context we use brother or buddy. Many things get lost in translation, especially context. Me knowing multiple languages, I realized the persons they get to translate only want you to get the gist and find certain verbiage solely for the native tongue speakers, feeling no need to translate it all.
