We Bruins fans hated his guts but we never underestimate his talent. This guy was the real deal and he had it all, stick handling, speed, great hand, pin point passing, great accurate slap shot ect ect. Plus he was a down to earth person who wasn’t in love with himself. We in Boston should thank Guy because he always said he played his best vs Boston. Thanks Guy for the memories eventhough they hurt….he was worth the price of admission.

Being born in Siberia and for the first time having encountered with Canadian hockey in the notorious summit games of 72 that ruined my image of the professional hockey and that was the fact. Even an excellent performance by Bobby Hull in the next series didn't change my mind. I was completely stunned to see Guy Lafleur playing the hockey of your dream a couple of years later on the level of the highest standard, reminding of the finesse of the European style. He instantly has become my favorite Canadian player of all times.....by far. The only hockey player I can put close to him on the pedestal is Mario Lemieux. RIP, you will be remembered by a one Russian Canadian.

@@ronbonora7872 I have never seen Bobby Orr play, but when I talked with Bobby Hull about ten years ago(our conversation lasted for an hour or even longer) and we were discussing the best players ever, he referred to Bobby Orr as the most versatile player ever. There were two rockets:):):):) : Maurice Richard and Pavel Bure. I have never seen the former one live, but the latter was mindboggling!

He was a great player and a very kind man. I was lucky enough to meet him in a fairly empty Victoria airport. He was really nice. I needed some help and he gave it. God bless him!

Miss you Don, Hockey Night is not the same, I was studying in Québec city in 1971, my friends said you have to see this Guy fellow play. The Ramparts fans were not happy if he only scored 2 goals a night. He'll be greatly missed.

I had the privilege of watching him play several times at Maple Leaf Gardens and the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium between 1974 and 1983. Him and Gilbert Perreault were the best skaters I ever saw.

At my age, and the league today is down toilet (as far as I’m concerned), these memories are priceless. It was never a better time in the 70s to be a Habs fan and having Lafleur show us how it was done

Great tribute - Thanks Don ! The story shared about Pollock getting Lafleur was great but key wrinkle was omitted. If memory serves correctly what made the strategy surrounding pick spectacular was Pollock watching the standings as season coming to end and acted with plan in place The pick from Seals was in jeopardy because LA (I believe) was falling behind the Seals which would have given LA first pick. Pollock went to work and traded Ralph Backstrom, a very talented forward, to LA to help LA win a few games down the stretch and nudge them above the Seals thus saving the first pick for MTL.

Wow, I started to really start to watch hockey was 69-70 or close to that, remember the expansion, but was a Montreal fan, so must of saw his rookie year. Didn’t know to young to know.

They forgot to mention the best part of how Sam Pollock made sure he kept the number one overall draft pick that landed Guy Lafleur. The L. A. Kings began playing worse than the Golden Seals and it looked like a real possibility that the Kings could finish last and earn the 1st overall pick. Sam Pollock saw this unfolding so he orchestrated a trade giving the Kings Ralph Backstrom, a very capable center, for two minor league players. The Kings overtook the Golden Seals in the standings and the rest is history.

A very.exciting player for sure. Sad about his passing!!!

We hated his guts in Boston but never underestimate his talent. He could really do it all. What a loss to The NHL to lose two of its best in Bossy and Lafleur in such a short period of time.

Guy Lafleur was everything that the Canadiens wanted in a player. A French man with a French name and even his number (10) was the French channel on Canadian TV sets back then. He was amazing without overshadowing his fellow teammates. In this interview they refer to him as "low key" and that is exactly what he was. He was also one of the few players to retire and then make a highly successful comebacks and then retire a hero.

Coming from a Man that lost to the HABS that many times, means a Lot to a Hockey Fan. I heard that Elon Musk was going to purchase the CBC next so he can put Don Cherry back on Hockey night in Canada. Ha ha!

First time I have heard Cherry in a couple years. He doesn’t sound as “good” as in the past. I hope he stands strong.

Cherry is the best!!!!

I got to meet Guy and play against him in an Old Timer's hockey game in Sarnia. Don Cherry is absolutely right about him. Very quiet ....almost shy but a very fun sense of humour. To back up what Don said about him wanting just to be one of the guys ....I asked him about playing in New York as compared to Montreal. He said in New York after practice and after the games the players mostly went on their own. He said the game had changed and the players started acting more like businessmen than athletes. Everyone was interested in talking to their agents about contracts and their business investmentsThe camaraderie was gone.

When I learned about his smoking, I was just amazed. How can you smoke and have lungs to skate like that ? Amazing. However, I find that that adds to the mystic of the dude. It doesn’t make any sense, but then he became one of the greatest. So, what you can assume is that their are people that we can’t explain.

My brother won a Boston Pizza promotion to play in the oldtimers hockey game in Edmonton. He played in the 3 period, the puck went up the ice my brother went in with LaFleur then the puck went back into the other end but came back to center fast. Where my slow brother was just getting back inbetween there blueline and center, the puck hit my brothers skate Lafleur just turned around not realizing there was one of his players coming back. He almost collided but grabbed the puck that hit my brothers skate went in and scored. My brother got an assist, also when they were in the dressing room Tiger Williams was being an asshole to the guys that got into play with the oldtimers. Guy told Tiger off and shut him up, my brother who was an Islander fan really admired Guy after this. Crazy how Bossy was my brothers hero in the younger days and Lafleur was mine.

I'll never forget that cheap shot from the German player. I never forgot that. Thank you Don Cherry for bringing that up.

I was a Toronto fan so I never rooted for Mtl. But I was sorry to hear about Guy's passing. He seemed like a nice guy. I was waiting for Cherry to comment about him. He obviously was sorry to hear about it as well. It was also nice to see Darryl Sittler another nice guy attend Guy's funeral.

I'm a die hard Montreal Canadiens fan and have several Canadien players as my hero's, from the Rocket to Doug to Jean to Kenny to Larry and of course Guy but the best player I have ever seen is Bobby Orr and that includes Wayne, Mario, Sydney, etc. etc. Thanks Guy for helping win so many Stanley Cups.

The kids today can’t ever understand how great #4 for Boston was. I’m an old Islander fan and there is no question that both Lafleur and Bossy were great players but there were not as good as Bobby Orr. The same goes for Gretzky, Lemieux and Messier. Bobby Orr changed the sport of Hockey.

Just to answer their question, Marcel Dionne went to St. Catherines to play Junior A because the OHA was considered a more competitive league than the QMHL. Lafleur was recruited to play in the OHA but decided to stay in Quebec.

Back in the early 70s l was a leaf fan, however because of relatives in Montreal l soon became a Habs fan and still am. Say what you want, but they are the most storied franchise, with Montreal you either love them or you hate them, and Lafleur fit right in with them.

The late 70s Canadiens were the best team I ever saw. I grew up in the Detroit suburbs as a Red Wings fan; Detroit wasn't much to watch at the time, so I preferred watching Montreal. The Leafs were usually on CBC in color from the nearby Windsor station, but I used to watch the Habs on some obscure far-away snowy black and white channel "en francais." The Canadiens could raise the intensity of their play as the game progressed like no team I ever saw. I watched many teams fold to their pressure. My primary memory of LaFleur was streaking down the wing with the hair flowing. They were a very complete team both offensively and defensively. I do not think it was necessarily an improvement to the game when goal scoring increased significantly during the eighties.

It's easy to forget but just imagine if Lafleur had just played one more year (and it's easy to argue that he never should have retired when he did), he could have had another cup with Gainey and Robinson on that amazing 1986 team!

The main reason why Lafleur didn't score as much in his first 3 seasons is because he wasn't given as much ice time as his veteran line mates. It's not a surprise that he took off in his 4th year, he was given much more ice time. It had nothing to do with him no longer wearing a helmet.

At least Guy did not have to deal with concussion issues like Sidney Crosby, Paul Kariya, Eric Lindros, and many other later players who wore helmets. Not wearing a helmet also gave him that more comfort and confidence, as per Dr. Fauci's reply. And it also added that special sort of mystique to his style as a player, so why would you want to put a helmet and even shield on over that?

The story of how they got Lafleur is even better. Tim missed the part where the Seals started winning a bit and there was a danger of them overtaking the expansion Kings and not finishing last. So Sammy Pollock dumped a couple of old timers that still had something in the tank on the Kings GM. They then finished ahead of the Seals and Pollock got his pick and later his five Cups!!
