Don Cherry - on women at hockey games

Спорт

Grapes goes off on the perils of not paying attention during hockey games. Probably not something he could get away with saying today.

Lol Don Cherry. The look on Ron's face at 0:01 is priceless, he knows whats coming. Another one of those rants to get Don in trouble. He's just an old fashioned guy who knows a lot about hockey but should probably shut his trap about everything else haha. Still love Don, just funny to see him get out of control and off topic and Ron try to drag him back and save him!

Not only hockey, but baseball too. & it's nothing new. I just listened to a recording of a Detroit-Yankees baseball game from 9/21/1934, the oldest existing complete game radio broadcast, & in that game, 76 years ago, a fan was struck by a foul ball & the announcer, Ty Tyson, mentioned that the "young lady" had to be carried out. She must have been yapping away, not watching the game! I immediately thought of this Don Cherry video. LOL. 76 years ago!

Grapes is making a perfectly valid point here; women tend not to be paying as much attention to the dangers around them - and evolutionarily this actually makes sense. Just imagine where we are now as a society that men looking out for women’s safety and reminding them to be careful is seen as insulting. What it comes down to is weak men. If all men stood in unison in issues like this and didn’t say irrelevant crap like “everybody gets hit with pucks” or “not all women are absent minded about these things”, then women would just take it for what it is and move on. But the hubbub comes out of the fact that you’ve got men who are afraid of their wives and women in general who play the beta strategy and try to placate women’s egos to gain favour. It’s not like anybody is trying to limit their access to the game, we’re just looking out for them. I just saw a video the other day of a woman getting hit by a semi on the highway. She’s just walking down the middle of the road after she’d gotten out of her car for some reason, totally oblivious to the traffic coming from behind her. Again not all women of course, but on the whole it makes sense evolutionarily because women wouldn’t have been programmed through endless generations of dealing with predators to be as observant of their surroundings. And sure there are men who weren’t out hunting because they were suited to it, and so there will be men who have the same sort absent mindedness, but it’s not gonna be nearly as many and not nearly as pervasive. And if you want to complain that this is a wrong or evil (I can’t imagine the bad faith it takes to say it’s evil) argument; that’s fine. Nobody, not even grapes, ever wanted to keep a woman from being able to voice her opinions. And yet it’s you who wanted to get Cherry fired for himself having the wrong opinions which didn’t hurt or threaten anyone. Most people consider these views antiquated, but I would challenge anyone to a debate on this issue and easily show that it is a perfectly erudite position and that the alternative is completely fraught with contradictions and more questions than answers. It’s always the people who would ban their opponent from even being allowed to voice their opinion who complain that they’re being censored even though they never are. That’s the ultimate irony of all this. Find me one woman who’s been fired or censored or stifled in any way because she’s found herself at odds with Grapes’ opinions about women; they don’t exist. In fact I bet you can’t even find anyone who can say they’ve been personally affected by his opinions - you’d only find people who claim that his opinions harm peoples confidence in themselves in some nebulous way that could never be disproven Meanwhile Grapes gets fired, an all-time Canada an icon, whom were blessed to have still living and interacting with us to this day, for having an opinion people don’t like. Canada, especially Ontario, will forever be ashamed of itself for what it did to Don Cherry. And I don’t even think it was immigrants who caused him to get banned. It was women and beta males who think they know the best way forward, even though they know more people like Don than dislike him, and it was the weakling executives in broadcasting who feel the same way. These are a minority of people in this province and in this country who know that the squeaky wheel gets the grease and that the silent majority of people who love Cherry would be sufficiently threatened by the idea of being called a racist for supporting him to let him go down without any fight. Canada didn’t just lose Don Cherry; it lost its courage, it’s pride, and it’s humility.

At 13 I was at the forum with my dad and watched a woman get hit in the face with a Lemaire slap-shot. He had just drifted over the blueline and wired one just above Tony O and the glass....splat! She was spread-eagled. St Johns ambulance guys came over and stretchered her out..Lemaire left the ice and made his way under the stands to check on her. I always wondered how bad she was injured. Man, could Lemaire smack that puck.

He's just so right! Male fans ALWAYS keep their eyes on the puck at hockey games. They are NEVER focused on anything else. They don't talk, they don't cheer, they don't buy or eat anything, they are always 100% focused on that puck! Women NEVER EVER EVER look at that puck - I think it's hormonal....

  • @alastair36

Yeah, big bad Don, always telling the truth. His only problem is how he delivers the message and that gets some people worked up (usually those that never played competitively, like most sports writers) Some women are hockey fans, but let's be serious,,, not all are. Don's accurate in his assessment. I was at a game last night with my 5 & 3 yr old boys. They watched the whole game, end to end. The women sitting around us were not that interested, good thing the puck didn't go in their direction.

i think extending the glass all the way up is a good idea--and not just behind the net, but all the way around the rink. not for safety, but because then the puck would never go out of play. Non stop action! But just imagine if one of them glass panels came crashing down. What a highlight that would make for ESPN or TSN.

I agree. I'm female. I have nasty feminazi sisters you don't want to meet. Yap yap yap. the lawyer will sue if your puck comes anywhere near her aura The social worker one will file damages for emotional stress Yep... I usually end up sitting alone as the guys sit with the guys and the women want to yap I've seen lots of people get seriously hurt at lacrosse games - you're not always sure who's got the ball, Where it is Nor where it's going next And that ball hurts! If you're at lacrosse game and you see people wearing backpacks backwards, on their chests, you know why! Kids are seriously distracting at hockey games, the action's too fast. Kids belong at baseball games. You got time between pitches to tell them to "sit down and shuddup, eat your pretzel" without missing much. I assume I'm talking to another adult here - I don't really talk that way to little kids (too often 😁)

Sadly, we live in a world where common-sense is obsolete. Seemingly intelligent adults constantly need to be told what to do (& what not to do) and we have become completely reliant on stupid little devices to live our lives. It never fails to amaze me how far we've come in our lifetime with advances in technology yet people can't think anymore. They can't perform the simple task of paying attention to their surroundings while crossing the street. They are oblivious to everything going on around them. There was a young woman on a device in the metro in Montreal who wasn't looking up and actually walked right in between two cars as the metro was leaving. Instead of addressing the problem (the inability to function with a device in hand), the question the media asked was "how can we provide better safety measures so that this sort of thing doesn't happen again?"Seriously? Maybe they all belong in a bubble so that nothing can touch them and they can continue to give the rest of us something to roll our eyes at every day. Devices are a convenience but we abuse it to the point of selfish stupidity when we drive while texting (how many accidents are caused by that?). I often imagine a wonderful disaster that knocks out power to all satellites. Seriously, how many of us would even know what to do next? Unfortunately, we're not in that predicament. We have to find ways to make life easier for stupid people. What we could (and should) do is lock all signals in public places where any danger can be present. Hockey arenas are no exception. Just a few months ago, PK Subban's puck flew into the crowd and hit a baby (6 months old, I believe). What a mother was doing bringing a newborn to a hockey game is beyond me. That young and that close to the ice, not smart. They could have chosen seats way higher up where those kind of incidents don't happen. In any case, the baby appeared to be OK and PK was apologetic about it. Did the stand-up thing and made sure both mother and baby were good. When there's a baby in your arms, you need to be focused on them, not watching out for flying pucks, so never put yourself in a position where that can happen. This is common frigging sense. Besides locking signals in public places, we also need to lock signals in moving vehicles. - Sincerely, someone from the last era of common sense.

You don't need to go to "cruel" - it's logical. a lot of females and kids are just going along for the experience to have fun they're not paying attention Dad wants to bring his son to the game, so he brings his wife to watch the son! I think the kids are more distracting - the mothers get distracted by the kids But that's how they're making money, that's who they're selling tickets to, why players can demand $10 - $12 million per season selling those tickets. Salary cap is based on NHL revenues Ticket sales to both fans and yappers go to NHL revenues. so they've got more netting and plexiglass up. And a team of lawyers who wrote a bunch of stuff in really tiny print on the back of the ticket It's not a gender thing so much is an interest thing But it's Bobby Orr's fault.. he's the one that brought chicks into hockey fan bases! I remember my sisters had their wall posters of that era - Bobby Orr and Mark Spitz. But even when I watch hockey games on TV I usually watch them alone. Cuz I'm female.. I don't want to get stuck with the girls, I was a goalie skills coach - I want to watch the game - but if I'm watching with a group of guys? it's sort of weird Chances are I'm going to end up in the kitchen serving their asses cuz I'm the only girl! So I just hang out with my husky Malamute... Sometimes he does his little dance and chases his tail when I yell "scoooore!" Life is so much easier and I enjoy the games more. With a dawg!

@AndyHurleysChicklet7 What do you expect her to do, let her kid run around the arena? I'm sure she'd rather sit and pay attention to the game. (I'm a female who'd love to AFFORD to go to the game!)

I hate the women who scream during a tense moment in a game....damn it drives me nuts....scare the hell out of me. They even mimicked it in EA NHL games.

and in the one case out of a hundred when it's a guy who gets hit by a puck, it's probably because he had to turn his and tell his girlfriend/wife/daughter "shut up and watch the game". the other solution is, of course, to be so poor, like me, that you can't afford to sit where the puck can reach you.

I can't defend Grapes here. But on the plus side, everyone makes mistakes and I'm sure Rose gave him sufficient punishment after the cameras turned off.

for my first three years of high school i worked at the Barrie Molson Centre during the Colts OHL Games, and i saw quite my share of women that got hit by pucks, A few men too though.
