J'y étais et c'était incandescent, Fulton a mis le feu au plateau. La plus belle distribution qu'on puisse rêver a fait le reste. Il est évidement impossible de réunir un pareil plateau à lors actuel.

Best production of Don Carlos by far. Singers were all superb. Don Carlos-Rodrigo duet in the first act, "Ella giammai m'amo", "O don fatale", and "Tu che le vanità" have never been sung like this before or after. This is the before and the after of Don Carlos.

My GOD Grace Bumbry is so damn good in this!!!

Gusts of wind blew on them at this outdoor stage during the whole performance and yet they sang wonderfully. For 3 hours! Yikes such artistry and strength, such professionals. Best singing. Monserrat's singing continually amazing, Grace, the tenor,, the bass, the choir, great work!

The MISTRAL, the wind which always blows down the Rhône Valley in summer is the cause of this. The people of Orange are used to it. However, it is an extra challenge for the singers.

Great performance, Aragall is just in his role, tragic and with this beautiful voice, the duets with Bruson are as powerfull as should be. Also Estes' s voice is at his best. Caballe's pianos are impressive and Bumbry's temperament is very good for her role. I'm enjoying it very much.

@@crazyorganist1609 Disagree. I never could understand why people are so crazy for Callas. She was a great actress but her voice was not so beautiful. She was very good, charismatic and so on… but certainly not the greatest of all time, like she is often described - and I cannot see why.

Addio La Superba, magnifica Elisabetta di Valois ! RIP (1933-2018). One of the most riveting operatic personalities of the 20th century! Endowed with a sensational and ample spinto voice, her repertory was extremely diversified, from classical melodies, to Zarzuela, pop hits (scoring huge triumphs with pop artists including Freddie Mercury and Vangelis) and of course opera, in roles ranging from Alceste, Medea, Semiramide, Contessa in the Nozze di Figaro, Norma, Imogene, the Tudor Queens, Violetta, Leonora, Elisabetta (in Don Carlos: a most fabulous interpretation), Manon, Salomé (Hérodiade), Manon Lescaut, Mimi, Floria Tosca, Princess Turandot, Adriana Lecouvreur, Arabella, Salome and countless others, including rarely performed works, both in opera and on the concert platform! A God’s voice, her perfect breath control (only challenged by that of Leontyne Price) was awesome, her mastery of the pianissimi (frequently overused) and long-sustained high notes (glorious if somewhat metallic high-Cs and Ds ) were thrilling to the last and projected easily in the largest auditoriums. Her trills were sometimes lazy as was her vision of the prosodic line, which she knew how to accommodate to best fit with her own vocality! She was a marvelous, unique and generous Lady whom I was privileged to know and of whom I have fond memories. She leaves an undisputed and regal artistic legacy. One of the last operatic titans! Her radiant smile and indomitable sense of humour will be missed but her talent will last through her many recordings. She was an ambassador of peace and humility … Her voice will resonate high up there among singing Angels who will rejoice in welcoming her loving soul in a better world. RIP.

I would like to spent a word for Verdi, the Opera's composer, before Don Carlos he took 3 operas in composition. This is the summa of Opera with Le nozze di Figaro. Lots of the opera composition are amazing, sometimes unbelievable. But the those 2 over are simple perfect . Here one of the best Elisabeth, second on my opinion to Signora Freni. Here they had the privildge of fhe open theater on open air. Examples, when Madame Bumbry sung Oh don fatale....the wind helps her for a dramatical moment in life, as a princess, as a singer, as an actress. Sublime . Io non posso esprime in altra lingua che conosco abbastanza bene, francese e tedesco, questa sublimità. Nel 2018 due voci sono scomparse caballe e franklin. Sono triste

Ottima produzione. Visto che qui si fanno classifiche dico anche la mia. Secondo me la migliore edizione è quella diretta da Giulini con Domingo, Caballé. Per quanto riguarda la Principessa d'Eboli ritengo che la migliore che ho mai ascoltato è stata senza dubbio Shirley Verrett. Credo anche che la migliore Elisabetta di Valois sia proprio la Caballé. Per il miglior Don Carlo la lotta è tra Aragall e Carreras (giovane). In questo ruolo era molto bravo anche Luis Lima. Filippo II è Ghiaurov tutta la vita, anche se qui Estes mi ha sorpreso favorevolmente.

I wanted to get to know Don Carlo in advance of the LA Opera producing it this fall, and wow what a performance. Bumbry was fabulous throughout, and Caballe's "Toi qui sus le néant" in act 5 brought down the house. Bruson, new to me, was fabulous also brought a long ovation. The microphones picked up some wind noise but the strength of the performances came through just fine. Strong performances throughout.

The wardrobe and accessories she wears during TU CHE LE VANITA and the final duet are the same ones she wore on stage in Chicago, Illinois in the United States in the title role of Donizetti's MARIA STUARDA at the time I happened to be onstage with her about ten years ago.

Una representacion impactante de una de las joyas verdianas. Estoy familiarizado con una version en CD con Caballe , Domingo y Verret, dirigidos por Giulini. Pero no conocia ninguna version en video, y esta version es realmente impactante, recordandonos esa voz suprema de Caballe, poseedora de los mejores pianisimos de cualquier soprano del siglo 20 y lo que va del 21. Una gran homenaje a la diva. RIP. Jorge Manuel Solano Chinchilla, desde Costa Rica

En el dúo se come con patatas a Estes, que no era un auténtico bajo ni tampoco muy musical (aunque sí de voz poderosa).

Verdi cut the Fontainebleau Act completely for his revised version (La Scala, 1884). I think it was a huge mistake, but this is a great performance anyway.
