Dominions 5 Tutorial: Pretender creation and game basics.

Ойындар

This video covers creating pretenders in dominions, as well as gameplay basics like magic pathing and scales.
Note: Made a small goof and forgot to talk about magic scales. Probably going to replace this video eventually with a fix version.
For now:
Each point of magic scales gives +1 research per turn to each mage, making it a good choice for nations who have lots of cheap mages.
It also reduces casting fatigue by 10% per point in provinces that have the scale, and reduces unit magic resist by 1 per 2 points.
Drain does the opposite, giving -1 research per turn, increasing casting fatigue by 10% per point, and increasing magic resistance by 1 per 2 points.
It isn't recommended to ever go to drain 3 due to some bad events that unlocks, but overall magic is a relatively inconsequential scale, especially for new players. This is because the advantage (faster research) is a bit situational and difficult to leverage. However, specific nations that revolve around cheap plentiful mages do need to take 0-1 magic scales and avoid drain at all costs.

That's probably the best explanation of scales I've heard. I finally understand them better now. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the video. I've been teetering on the edge of getting into Dominions for a while, and as a tutorial this covers everything in exactly the depth I wanted in one place. Great help!

If you're willing I have a couple of questions that I've realised are tripping me up a smidge. I took the Erf Snek with a 7 earth bless with Tir na n'Og (for no other reason than they appealed) and set to the expansion phase. It felt pretty respectable and I managed the 15 provinces by the end of the first year. However I feel like I'm falling into a noob trap of "must put out a researcher every turn! Early research is good research". But thinking about it, more resources invested into a stronger early expansion might mean that I can catch up with the research faster when I begin to pump out forts, labs and temples. Is that correct? Do you have any tips on when to prioritise army over research? And do you begin constructing forts in the first year, or do you like to get past the expansion phase first? And somewhat tied up with that is when do you begin moving your mages to the front lines? Travel times can be quite the thing in dominions. Thanks very much!

Always prioritize army over research in the very early days. There might be exceptions for some specific nations and strategies but probably not. You do of course want to get as much early research as possible, just try and think of it in terms of setting up your army recruitment, then squeezing in a mage between expansion forces if possible. Certain nations can do that pretty easily, but others will really have to stick to building expansion forces, usually due to their mage costs or expansion force efficiency. When you start building forts largely comes down to when you can afford it. You want to begin building the second you can afford a fort usually, but often that won't be the case until after expansion. Also I usually aim for at least two off cap forts right after expansion. More on nations like EA mictlan that has a use for massed forts because they have recruit anywhere sacreds. As for moving mages to the Frontline, I try and do it as late as possible when I actually expect a fight. This may not actually be the optimal strategy, but moving mages means missing out on research, which I hate to do. It's terrible to keep mages loitering while not in forts because you are wasting research or other uses for mage turns. Of course, if you build a border fort and station your army there it can reduce these issues, but you make spook your neighbors if in a player vs player game.

Thanks very much indeed! Your in depth reply is greatly appreciated. I think I was focusing way too much on research during expansion, rather than going after land. Also the forts definitely make sense. Cheers!

I plan to once I get 1-2 games done in Dom 5, or the Dom 4 inspector gets updated for Dom 5. Construction/items is the hardest section of the game to cover actually because there's no realistic way to access everything in a useful format for it in game. I made a video for it in dom 4 but it was almost 2 hours long and then there was an issue with the video so I'd have had to redo it and welllll man I didn't want to do that marathon again haha.
