Part 1: • Dominick Cicale on Why...
--------
Dominick Cicale discusses the transformation in the mob world triggered by high-profile cooperations, particularly his encounter with notorious mobster Sammy "The Bull" Gravano. Cicale, who once cooperated with authorities and entered the Federal Witness Protection Program, reflects on his experiences and the seismic changes in mob mentalities. Recounting his time in witness protection, Cicale reveals his unexpected camaraderie with Gravano, who was then incarcerated for his involvement in the Arizona ecstasy ring. Cicale's cooperation led to significant repercussions, including life sentences without parole for several mobsters. He admits his actions stemmed from perceived betrayals and a stark absence of mob loyalty. Highlighting Gravano’s pivotal role, Cicale notes, “Sammy the Bull opening up the floodgates.” Where once no mob bosses turned state's evidence, Gravano's actions spurred a wave of similar decisions, reshaping organized crime.

He's right, and this is something that often gets mentioned in mafia discussion circles. There had been acting bosses in American Mafia families who had cooperated but Sammy was the highest-ranking member of the NY Mafia to flip at that time. Many other heavyweights followed soon after as it became more psychologically acceptable for guys in NY who'd been raised their entire lives to think of snitches as the lowest of the low to betray all they knew.
