What a tremendous privilege to have a recording of Dominic Miller giving a guitar lesson. It’s a great time to be learning guitar these days.

Yeah i thought the same recently and was even comparing it to the centuries ago, when it was only for very powerful people to have great maestros at their court to hear them playing. Now hundred years later we only have the notes but no recordings, many experts still guessing how to original composers actually played it. And nowadays we can't just only have the greatest performance at any time for free at the tip of our fingers but even interviews and discussion where great players really examine the great songs in detail… it's insane actually.
Yeah but what is the first piece that he plays for a couple of seconds before the prelude ? That's what everyone wants to know lol

That angle from the back of the neck is incredible. I've always focused on where the pad of my thumb is but I'm really surprised by where the base of his thumb is. That leads to a completely different hand position. What a terrific lesson.

I’d coincidentally been practicing The Shape of My Heart for a couple of weeks, and was frustrated by how many dead notes I was getting. When I saw this video I checked the position of my thumb, and realized that on long stretches it was sticking out in the air, as far from where Dominic Miller said it should be as possible. So I tried centering the thumb behind the chord on the neck, and voila, not only no more dead notes, but it sounded like I had a new guitar. Holy crap.

I've written a lot of music on guitar over the years. And I don't often play a lot of it. Lately I find myself contemplating recording this stuff, so I've been playing it more often. I'm finding it kind of tough going sometimes, and mainly because of this thumb business. I have to figure out where my thumb was positioned when I wrote the piece (and my thumb position has evolved over the years). It all becomes a bit of a puzzle at some point. And it turns out that playing anything at all interesting requires quite a bit of hand strength.
