Dominate with the side-top serve

Спорт

In this video, England international player Charlotte Bardsley explains how to forehand side-topspin serve. This is a serve with some sidespin and some topspin. Charlotte uses this to force her opponents into topspin rallies, where she can then (hopefully) dominate.
The purpose of this serve isn’t necessarily to win the point outright - although that is a bonus. The purpose is to set up the type of rally which suits Charlotte’s style of play. It’s a slightly different way of thinking about service, but hugely effective if you can develop this skill.
Charlotte explains how to do the serve and how to use it to force her opponent to receive in a way which gives her an opportunity to attack first.

Excellent tutorial! These slow-motion bits are particularly useful because this serve looks easy to do when you're watching someone doing it, but takes lots of nuanced practice to master.

Hi Tom & Charlotte, very much agree with the point you make about too much spin on your serve. It can be awkward when you get it back. Often much better knowing what the return is likely to be.

I don't often comment on table tennis tutorials, however, this one was very easy to apply, at least for myself. If you don't have a solid forehand or backhand, this serve will not be of much good to you. Yes, as she said, don't put too much topspin on the ball with this serve, as it will be too obvious and much more difficult to serve short and low.. All in all, a very good tutorial.

Top spins serves are very easy for the receiver to attack. It's critical to keep it low and short. Otherwise you will get attacked.

This. For me it´s more difficult to keep them low than side-backspin serves.

Perfect variation would be pendulum with no spin (slight backspin maybe) fast and long to backhand. Most opponents would counter it into the net, while expecting the topspin. Just push it forward in the first part of the motion of the serve and the pull the bat up to fake the topspin.

There is no such thing called "pendulum" with nospin. You either get a sidetop, sideback, pure side spin from a pendulum serve.

Thank for a very good video - one question only: Isn't the ball illegally "thrown" towards the racket in most of the servings? I thought the ball should be tossed straight up (vertical), and not in an angle...? :-)

Anyone have a tip on correctly anticipating the drop on the serve? I struggled with this when I would toss a ball in the air and hit it with a bat. I always swing early, but I can't seem to get myself to time it later.

Eye contact on the ball. You will advanced players never look at the ball during their serves but when you're learning watch the motion while you're practicing until you hit it everytime
