Dome Home BURIAL Start to Finish - Music & Drone Shots ONLY!

ALL drone footage was recorded with the DJI Mavic II Zoom!
Burying our underground monolithic concrete dome home from start to finish with music and drone footage only.
It has been quite a journey from summer, to fall, and now to winter but we did it! We are insulated and buried and look forward to a cozy warm winter :-)

▬ ABOUT US ▬
We are Rich & Kathie, a retired couple building our dream home: A SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT OFF GRID earth sheltered home in the Adirondacks!
The house will be covered with about 30" of soil which helps to maintain an internal temperature between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter & summer respectively. This means that in the winter we will only need minimal heat that we plan to provide with a small wood burning stove and we shouldn't need any air conditioning in the summer at all!
With inflation right now, the energy efficiency of this house is a HUGE Plus! But, it also means that we have a super tight budget that is getting tighter by the day. For this reason we DIY everything we reasonably can and find creative ways to save money such as repurposing.
Please subscribe and join us to see how we manage the challenges of staying in budget and exactly how energy efficient this house actually is when it is done!
We appreciate all your support :-)

    Amazing drone montage and "conclusion" with the bonus of the changes in all the surrounding trees! Great filming and editing (and flying). Any water issues with the standing snow or melt off? Does snow actually add insulation to an earth covered dome/home? Blessings

    Thank you! And thank you for mentioning the trees! I loved seeing how they changed through the whole house burying 😊 a little water collection in the east terrace due to settling but it will be easily remedied and yes, the snow definitely helps insulate us! Happy Thanksgiving 😊

    Congratulations ... well done but just a little curious what the inside temps are now that your fully covered. We are now down to about 70 degrees inside without any heating being used but had our connected garage open quite a bit to rearrange the garage to make room for my huge tool box from work to fit now that I retired. I did not realize the connected garage could effect the inside house temperature so much. I think the insulation and drywall between the garage is an issue we need to address and very soon. Strange how life rearranges your priorities without any of your need for consent. But with the garage doors open it really drops the temperature in the home for the short term anyway. We drop to about 69 over the course of the day and recover overnight to just over 71 degrees with overnight temps outside in the very low 40s. We are going to need to do something to eliminate the transfer of heat and cold between the two structures very soon. The problem is we need access to the wiring for the power service panel located on that wall between the garage and home for our permanent wiring on the house. On a side note with our 30 cubic foot fridge and the chest fridge and chest freezer we are only dropping the batteries to about 89% overnight. So I'm very hopeful we can continue on our WW2 equivalent vintage technology lead acid submarine batteries for some time more. We put them in service to build the home in 1996 when Lithium Ion was not even developed yet for private use by consumers. We will eventually upgrade but not for a while we hope! The fed has crushed the housing market but we are told they will likely reverse course in January to prevent a total irreversible crash of the US economy. They really want an excuse to implement their wet dream of a CBDC for total monetary control, so they just may pull the plug and destroy our economy. Time will tell.

    We were averaging about 60 with no heat but when we installed the 12’ slider we went down to 50. The wood stove really helps but we let it burn out overnight. When it’s sunny out it heats us up pretty good too. But even when we went down to 10 degrees overnight the bedroom was at 65 and the dome was about 62-63 in the morning with no heat on all night. We still have a lot of buttoning up to do so it should only get better from here.

  • @keppypaul

    @keppypaul

    @@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid Yes that is what we experienced as well. Garage door open and temps dropped dramatically. A 12' slider during construction process would be much the same dramatic drop in temperature. Takes a day or two to recover but it does seem to recover at least for us anyway. Very cool when folks visit us their first question is do you have heat now? We always say with pride no we don't have a heater it is all natural.

  • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid

    That’s great! Temps here have been low now for several days in a row so wood stove is keeping us at 67-68. I should add though that the stove is small and only intended to heat a 600 square foot house in our zone but we’re easily heating 1500😁👍
