Dolphin Shoals - Mario Kart 8 *Full Big Band Jazz Fusion version* ft. Bryan Carter

Музыка

Drummer supreme Bryan Carter is featured in this high energy Jazz fusion Big Band arrangement of this modern video game music classic - "Dolphin Shoals" from Mario Kart 8 which has one of the internets' all time favorite sax solos that also contains a particularly note worthy be-bop lick you may already know and love :)
I took that lick and expanded it for the whole band and sax section, as well as tried to add in other "dolphin" related Jazz quotes such as Dolphin Dance and On Green Dolphin Street. See if you can find them!

    It certainly felt very "REMEMBER THIS?" IDK, this arrangement really doesn't do it for me. Feels... weird? Too busy? I think the good thing about the original song is how clean it is, this is just muddy and a bit obnoxious.

    @@RDR911 honestly i think thats kind of the point. it's such an iconic lick/meme in the vgm jazz community, and as someone who was only until recently in high school jazz band i can tell you that everyone in my ensemble has tried to play it once, regardless of whether or not they've even touched mario kart. imo, this arrangement is really vindicating for young jazz and vgm jazz enthusiasts and represents the fun and unifying aspects of the community. even if it sounds kind of busy and arbitrarily full at some parts, seeing the dolphin shoals run played by so many people at such a high skill level in a creatively unique context is awesome

    The interpolation of the famous solo into a modern arrangement is actually something I first heard in gypsy jazz! Modern manouche guitarists play Django Reinhardt's solo as the new "head" over Django's Tiger - it's always badass when it happens and it happens well, just like in this case where they play ALL the major parts of the original solo!!

    This is such a flex. The "Dolphin shoals lick" is supposed to be the pinnacle of soloing, this crazy thing that only happens when a top player is unleashed. But you just made the whole band play it, in unison or in jazz harmony, like a dozen times.

  • @mphylo2296

    @mphylo2296

    Well, sort of. It was an impressive lick precisely because it was likely improvised or developed during the recording process, and was being performed at a breakneck tempo. That context is a big part of why it impressed people. It's a great solo, no doubt, but I do think you're overselling it a bit. I'd say any musician who's gone through tertiary education in music performance ought to be able to replicate it with practice, especially if it’s been notated for them. This is not to diminish the talent of the musicians in the 8-bit big band, of course. They’re all excellent musicians. I'm not at all surprised they can all perform it. I think Kazuki Katsuda is an excellent performer, but people treat him as if he's in a league of his own, as if it's surprising that other people can replicate his solo.

    This is an absolute masterpiece. Straight 🔥 from the whole ensemble! Turning some of the original solo lines into soli lines is insane but it was done so masterfully here. And giving the whole ensemble “the Mario kart lick”. 10/10!

    FINALLY! I've been listening to this song isolated from the album release and the live performance for probably a year, now I get to listen to it on repeat.

    I'm the general stage manager and used this track today as the bows for my high school drama production, boomers in the audience had no clue. I like to hope I got some knowing nods out there. Thank you 8 bit big band, vibes are simply immaculate.

    This may be my new favorite arrangement 8BBB has done. Nice flippin’ job all all around, everyone! Also a huge fan of the Miles and Herbie quotes y’all threw in there 😁🐬

    Oh my gosh. The music sounds incredible as always (beautiful arrangement of a great song), and that drum showcase is absolutely fabulous (the speed! the precision!). But the animation! The smile on my face! Details like Link driving on the piano during the glissando, and Bowser dropping off the track, and Chuck Quizmo(?!?)... so much love in this production :>
