I'm drunk, so I need to get this off my chest, I heard I was gonna be a dad for the first time while listening to this song in a Killarney traditional Irish pub, sadly we lost the baby but I end up here every time I'm drunk, I've since been blessed with 3 beautiful children and I know I'm so lucky ! But it still kills me, first time commenting, ignore me

My brother died 7 years. This was his favourite song, not so much mine because I was fed up of him singing it day in day out. Caledonia was played at his funeral and everytime i heard it since he died it made me burst into tears. I just couldn't listen to it :( So many times I got up and walked out of a room if it came on and 7 years of family gatherings without him, someone/everyone got up and sang his favourite song. A few weeks ago it came on the radio while i was driving and I didn't cry. I guess that means after 7 years I'm after coming to terms with the loss of my brother. Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time ❤

When my daughter aged 29 took her own life in 1993, I was devastated as anyone can imagine. But, immediately after her passing, a song came into my mind which wouldn't go away and it was .. 'Caledonia. ' I didn't want a song in my head, but it wouldn't stop and at that time I had no idea that my daughter was communicating with me from spirit. The piece that came to me was just the chorus - 'Let me tell you that I love you and think about you all the time....' (I often say to folks now that when anyone passes into the spirit world, they go home....) Now, I am aware that spirit communicates with me by songs. Music is definitely food for the soul .

This song is so brilliant because it’s universal. It captures the longing we all have for a place we call home, wherever we’re from. There’s nothing chauvinistic about it - a national song that is international in sentiment - we all have our own personal Caledonia.

The great Dolores was the one who brought this brilliant Sottish song to prominence. We Irish seem to have great PROes, and I have no wish to denigrate our lovely music, but there is great Scots, and English, music, and we all know what great singers the Welsh are. When I was trying to teach music to youngsters I used to tell them to try everything from Traditional to Classical, and not get bogged down in one genre.. There is some great Pop music out there also.☺☺☺☺☺☺

Dolores is the kind it takes time to come to love and then you fall in love and her versions of oft-recorded songs are always best. 'The wind that shakes the barley,' for example. Of course 'You'll never be the sun' is in the pantheon of songs.

Dougie Maclean's version is absolutely the definitive version. This is a lovely version, but Dougie Maclean's version is truly heartfelt and deep.

@@MerleHeidi Absolutely. You can't have an Irish person singing this song with the same passion, feeling and deep-felt love as a true Scot.

@@StrathpefferJunction I appreciate your response, Strathpeffer Junction, but I don't agree. I think anyone from any background who has a true heart and a true soul can sing any song with passion, feeling, and deep-felt love. I once responded to someone who criticized the great singer/actor/humanist Paul Robeson's singing of the Hebrides Isles song "Eriskay Love Lilt", because Paul Robeson was American and Black. Paul Robeson sang songs in many languages from all over the world. His singing of Yiddish songs was truly done with passion, feeling, and deep-felt love. I think Dolores Keane sang this song with true feeling, and yes, I do like Dougie Maclean's version the best, not because he is Scots, but because it is his song....

@@MerleHeidi I'm not arguing that other renditions are not well sung and with feeling and emotion, but unless you feel the real connection to and emotional relationship with the land, I just don't believe it has the same meaning. I did not feel the coonection listeniing to her as I do listening to Dougie MacLean, or even Paulo Nutini or Amy MacDonald. There's still something missing for me. There are a number of Irish and American songs that are truly awesome on all counts, and I think they're sung best by those who can relate on all levels. You have your opinion, I have mine.

Obviously I'm expressing my own opinion but it's ironic that the best version of a Scottish song is by an Irish singer. There are many very good versions of this song but I rate this one as the best.

Dougie Maclean. Best version. Dolores Keane is wonderful, and this is a lovely version of the song. But nothing can match Dougie Maclean's deep feeling.
