Dolores Claiborne Book vs Movie

This underrated Stephen King book was adapted into a movie starring Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Even though we get great performances, there is something lacking and some changes made which cause me to not like the movie as much as the book.

Most underrated King adapted movie. Kathy Bates was criminally overlooked for an Oscar. Judy Parfitt’s brilliant portrayal of Vera should have gotten a supporting actress Oscar as well.

Oooo that makes sense! I forgot the beginning of the book King says how the events of both books takes place during the same eclipse. I'll have to do a book vs movie for that one sometime. Thanks!

Yes, Stephen King likes to reward his “constant readers” with little tidbits. I read Dolores Claiborne after Gerald’s Game and recognized that immediately :)

Joe was played by David Strathairn. He was in A League of Their Own, The River Wild and Goodnight & Good Luck. Glad I watched the movie instead of reading the book.

I just watched the movie. It's a pity that the movie didn't include Vera's children. It would have make the plot even more interesting. In the movie it seemed a bit weird that Vera would leave all her fortune to Dolores.

Hi, thanks for your brilliant review video. I just wanted to reply to your question. I found this on the internet. I knew that it was linked as well to another stephen King book, maybe more than one. I found this; Dolores Claiborne is linked to King’s previous 1992 novel, Gerald’s Game, by a psychic flash that takes place during the 1963 solar eclipse when Dolores kills her abusive husband at the same time that Gerald’s Game’s Jessie Burlingame is being molested by her father over by Dark Score Lake and the two women are briefly given access to each other’s thoughts. 😊😮❤

glad you liked the video! and thanks for sharing! I actually read Gerald's Game earlier this year and saw the connection between the two. While I liked Gerald's Game, of the two I prefer Dolores. In Dolores the molestation is just referenced whereas in Gerald's we actually get the description and it was tough for me to read a scene like that.

Just finished poring through Delores Claiborne this morning and rented the movie on amazon . I immediately knew what was going on with Selena in the book... and even though you wanted the SOB dead, it was difficult to read just for how prolonged it was and felt a smidgen of remorse for him because of how long it took. (JUST a smidge.) Enjoyed the movie for what it was. Very different adaptation and I understand how they want to try and condense the time frame so it makes more sense that the sexual abuse and bank and death are over a shorter time frame. I'm GUESSING most of the earlier scenes are from the 70s as the book has a lot longer range of time....going back to the late 40s when Dolores starts working for Vera, and the sexual abuse is in 62 and the eclipse is in July of 63. (an Actual event. The one in the movie isn't directly the same one because of time frame). Being a major 11/22/63 fan I was gobbling up the references to Kennedy and what real life scenarios that he is mentioned in are also mentioned in 11/22/63. The scene from Dolores's interview in the movie I immediately recognized what Vera was saying to the person before Dolores as what she had spouted off to a maid of hers that eclipse day in the 60s where Dolores basically went after her and called her out on her bitchiness because her children weren't there. (not knowing that they were dead)/Nice little scene from the book that made its way somehow into the movie. Enjoyed it for what it is. They have to dramatize it somehow and it got the point across, just dont' watch the movie first and think this this and this is going to happen with the daughter in current day when she's off in New York. From what I saw in previews I could tell that the boys weren't going to be in it , and kind of annoying, yes, but not entirely central to the direct point of the movie.

I thought when I was reading the book that the little girl that she was having visions of was Vera as a little girl. And that's why she told Dolores yo kill Joe!!

New subscriber here :) If you liked Dolores Claiborne I recommend you read Gerald’s Game and Rose Madder by Stephen King. Both have a strong female main character just like this one. Stephen King said he based the character’s on his wife and her female relatives :). And I hope you read IT, even though it’s one of his “horror” books. It’s my favorite and I read all of his books. I just don’t recommend reading it at night because it is a scary book. On the other hand, I think it has some of his best characters and its a beautiful story about friendship.

That's awesome! I definitely have want to cover those. I probably will read It at some point, but I don't think I'll watch the movies. I have a stronger stomach for reading horror vs watching it. Salems Lot comes out later this year but I don't know about doing a book vs movie because I'm worried the movie will be too scary for me.

The Spitfire Grill by King is a better more dramatic movie and King changed his writing style after reading Ghost Story by Peter Straub and If You Can See Me Now by Straub is one of Kings favorite books.

Hope you might get to Pet Sematary one day though that’s a tougher read due to the subject matter. The book is the King one that scares me the most (IT is close behind), but the movies just never quite capture the terror of the novel; the ‘90s radio abridgment and Michael C. Hall reading the audiobook are my favorites
