Dollywood Has Changed Mystery Mine’s Layout

It has nothing to do with GP or enthusiast opinions. That section of the track was a notorious trouble spot. It constantly had to be welded on and was causing damage to the ride vehicles. In the span of the season and a half I worked the ride, we had to take 3 different cars out of service for extended periods because of that curve. It was poorly designed, and has now been corrected. I'm not in the slightest surprised by the reprofile - it really was just a matter of time.

I worked at an amusment park for one season. So yes, I get why some things are changed...and sometimes (more often than not) for a valid reason. Most people don't understand...and when something is changed, they whine and complain about it. And well, you can't please everyone.

It’s because it’s removing the intensity and force that people loved and personally I loved to outside part the one time I rode it and they could simply put in newer track and new wheels to make it a bit smoother but the force was a great part of the ride so seeing the most forceful part get nullified it makes people understandably upset

Honestly that section was fairly jarring and lil uncomfortable it wasn't painful but uncomfortable and it just didn't really do anything for the ride that much imo. Its a good business decision for the park because more people will ride it and find it less uncomfortable. Enthusiasts are the minority of a parks attendance and a majority of the people visiting the park are families and they will probably like this more because it's less intense.

There were a few people that I rode with that complained about or even refused to re-ride Mystery Mine because of that drop. And they are also re-tracking the first helix which is in my opinion the roughest part of the ride. So personally, I don’t think the re-profiling will change my opinion of the ride much, but I do think it’s more of a positive change from the parks perspective.

Anyone who thinks parks are making decisions based off what enthusiasts want is delusional. The GP is the target audience. The vast, vast majority of people visiting these parks are GP. They could care less if they make a change that enthusiasts don't like because the potential loss of revenue from enthusiasts is equivalent to a rounding error in their books. Seriously, why are enthusiasts so entitled. They really expect a park to spend tens of millions of dollars on a coaster that will only appeal to the extremely small number of enthusiasts that visit. Do you think Kings Dominion is stoked that Intimidator 305 appeals to enthusiasts, despite the fact they dropped $25 million on it? No, they aren't which is why they spent even more money modifying it to make it less forceful. Honestly, you need to be happy Dollywood gave us something like Lightening Rod. The GP pay for those coasters. If Dollywood thinks removing an element like this from their mine coaster will make it more appealing to the GP, they would be stupid not to do it. I promise you, no one at Dollywood lost any sleep over what enthusiasts were going to think about the removal of this element.

I've always thought this ride looked incredibly short, and it looks even more like a one-trick-pony now. And if Hershand changes a damn thing on Lightning Run or Storm Chaser they will lose all of their thrill seeking crowd to Holiday World, not JUST us enthusiasts. (They can take their cinnamon bread and choke on it for all I care at that point too)

This isn't really an opinion war between enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts, imo. Looking at the r/rollercoasters subreddit, the general consensus seems to be that this was necessary, but is not an improvement. Personally, I think this new layout is *way* too boring, but the old overbank was probably the single jankiest element in Dollywood, Tennessee Tornado included.

Complaints from people in the industry? Yeah right, complaints from guests that just cannot be satisfied, The initial drop outside was so rough that I can guarantee riders would leave the park complaining of back and neck pain. Back and neck pain is the backbone of our litigious society. My advice to everyone, stop ridding it and then you will have nothing to bitch about. That is of course, until you find something else to bitch about. The majority of Americans cannot stop finding fault long enough to be happy enough to enjoy themselves. That and the fact that everyone thinks the entire world wants your opinion. I am through preaching so you can go back to your “me me me” existence. It takes extra effort to be critical and zero effort to be happy. It’s called free will, therefore you are free not to ride Mystery Mine ; even free enough not to go to Dollywood. I have been hypocritical by criticizing your negative thoughts but maybe one person can glean something from this and will start to be positive, leaving one less miserable a-hole in the world.
