Yes, yes, yes, save the planet. When I was a senior in high school the US celebrated the first Earth Day. The principal let us have a school wide assembly. We buried the earth. I was the “preacher “. Very dramatic. Our group later cleaned up several parks in the city. Thanks for subscribing.

Great! The birds will love you for it.

I save the suet cake molds and make my own suet. Those cakes cost about $1.50 which adds up over the season. In melted lard I add p-butter, crushed c-flakes or wheaties and birdseed. Chopped p-nuts optional. Freeze a couple hrs. I love Larry's ideas and use them.

I am rendering beef fat in my crockpot as I am reading this. I had to call my local grocery store (meat department) at 6 a.m. today and have them save me the fat from what they trim. Its $1.99 a pound here so for 5 lbs. a got a bunch of fat. I cut the fat into small pieces (kitchen scissors work the best for me) and will render it for 5+ hours. This is my first time making it. I will add everything he added plus some dried fruit. I mill my own organic wheatberries and corn so that will be perfect. Cant wait to see if my birds go for it.

I often buy commercial suet, probably once a year, just so I can have that mold to make my own! I like those molds because they fit the suet feeders that I use.

I love the way your hanging suet look with the cold weather outside. I love colder weather and providing the birds with something to eat really helps them out. Now they wont have to be out in the cold and hungry too!

I know exactly what you mean. I looked at those baskets at $ store several times wondering if it would work. I think it was my third or fourth trip that I actually bought them. I’ll never post a video unless I’ve tried it and make sure it works. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Those snowy days get lots of business at the feeders. This will cut down on the limb hanging maintenance.🕊

Thanks for the feedback. We have several different suet feeders, on the colder days, they always go for the homemade over the stove bought.

I watched this video 3 weeks ago, been checking my DT for the baskets, but they've been out of stock. Finally, just this morning, I bought 2 baskets and am back to watch this informative video. However, I stumbled upon a problem... I have NO wire hangers in my house. 🤦🏼 lol

The dollar store has been really hit and miss lately. If you watch this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/X3xmr8urfs23kZM.html At 26 seconds, I’ve made it with peanut butter feeders above and used eyebolts to hold it at the top. I think I remember reading the comments they used zip ties to hold it. Thanks for watching, good luck

Larry, hi! 😁😁 So very glad to meet you. I live in the southern California desert and have been feeding my birds ever since I was awarded the grandma of the year award for accommodating mama and papa bird birthing babies on Mother's Day 3 1/2 years ago while they nested on the, cooler outside my kitchen window, had their babies, "welcomed them" to leave the nest, then did it all again! Prolific little rascals, aren't they?!? Alas, I digress... Your suet feeder is absolute genius 👏 . I even have all the stuff here to make one or maybe even two. I'll put their homemade suet cakes in it since they won't even touch the stuff I buy at Walmart anymore. Quick question... you used three cakes... does the middle one sorta flop to one side as the outside ones get eaten? 🤔 ...or, since I make their cakes myself I could just make them super thick. My birds, mostly doves and Gambel's Quail, thank you. Smiles from your newest subbie, MK 😊😀😁

Thanks for subscribing! I’m so glad you like the video. What kind of birds hatched on your cooler? We have a Carolina wren make a nest above our front door every year. As for the three cakes, we were running low this week so I only put one in it and it still works just as well. So it really doesn’t matter if you put in one or three. @@LSatch The birds on the cooler were mourning doves, and since I had time to prove myself to the parents, by the time the babies hatched (which was incredible to see... them wiggling to get out and mama and papa pulling the shells off with their beaks from the outside) I was able to get pretty close - reach in close enough to place some seeds and water next to the nest. I think half the pictures on my phone are of my first dove family! Thanks for the direction re: the suet. I did notice one of your birds eating from the side, which I thought was cool. That is very neat and I would love to try that. First I have to stop the raccoons from stealing all the suet in the feeders I have. :P I think I know how to fix it but will have to wait until tomorrow as it is about 1 am now and I was just robbed of a half of a suet cake. I am assuming it was a raccoon anyway. Did not see it. - Heidi

I've had a problem with racoons as well. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIx129GrhNq7XbQ.html They are very clever but they can't jump like squirrels. Try to get it as far off the ground as possible and as far away from surrounding trees or poles as possible. Good luck. Larry

@@LSatch That is my problem though. I have it hanging in a tree and don't really want to relocate it. :( I will figure something out. I bought a few of the small organizer baskets and one of the larger ones. :) I figure the larger one could hold 1.5 of the standard small cakes if not 2 with some creative placement of cut pieces. :D - Heidi

I make my own suet, equal parts grease and peanut butter. The birds prefer bacon/hamburger grease (no seasonings), combined and melt it in the microwave, I add a little wheat flour, wheat germ and mostly bird seed. The whole wheat and germ is to help bind it together. You can also add treats like minced apples and/or premium parrot food. Line a cookie sheet with clear wrap or foil, spray with nonstick spray. Pour the suet out press down divide into suet size pieces with the back of a spoon. And pop into the freezer a couple of hours and serv. They love it!

I read somewhere that bacon grease has too much salt to be suitable for suet. Any confirmation on that?

Thanks, Larry, I found the source of my info! According to Lesley's video (go to minute 2:19 at kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZI5k15eNZJfSpqQ.html), bacon fat is not a good choice because of its nitrates and high salt content. The video contains some additional valuable info. :)

Instead of the racoons dragging off one cake now they can drag off 3 cakes! LOL!

Yes we have squirrels. They generally don’t go for the suet feeders. Right now they are eating my pecans and aren’t at the bird feeders at all. We leave all the feeders outside at night. Occasionally a raccoon will figure out how to get to them. Thanks for watching

It was a clothes hanger. The kind that has a cardboard tube to hang pants on. My pants come on them from the dry cleaners. Hope this helps. I have since changed the design. A raccoon pulled it down. It now has two eye bolts that I screwed into the bottom of the dollar store peanut butter hack.

they don't mind poop and even eat their baby's poop to keep the nest clean, as well as to get nutrients from it since they're giving most of the food to the babies.

nice but i'm sure squirrels will get in there and the branch might break when it jumps on it other than that looks great 😉oh yeah one thing hard to find clothes hanger 😥uh well i'll figure it out might be even better for chicken treats

Lit' AHSr. Thanks for your thoughts. Our squirrels never bother the suet. They do love our peanut butter feeder if you look at that dollar store hack. Recently I changed the feeding station, kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y398rNaMkrOWmNo.html. I also made changes to the suet feeder in the follow up video, no coat hanger needed. I never thought about treating my chickens to it, that’s a great idea, going to try it. Hope it works out for you, Larry

I think it depends on what’s in the suet. There are many recipes and types of suet. I’ve seen squirrels at our suet feeders but they prefer the sunflower seeds.

It’s suet cakes sold at “no melt”. I’ve made home made suet with lard and it melts in the summer with our hot weather here in Georgia.
