Dollar Store $10 Overnight Survival Camp

Ойын-сауық

Camp with nothing except what you are wearing and what you can buy for $10 at a dollar store. Cook 2 meals, pack should be water resistant, have a light source.
Mine was supposed to be a winter survival but it ended up being more like spring weather. It took place in late winter in Kansas but the high was 73 and the low was 51 overnight.
There aren't really very many public land spots with good tree cover near me and this was just a quick one-day thing. I did pickup my trash including the wayward store bag plus much more rubbish that had collected in this shelter belt.

Uke, Scotch? Comfort items. Public park in view of your truck? So what! You bought ten items, you camped. I survived a stroke in Nov 2015. Now my legs barely work and accomplishing what you did is a stretch for me. The $10 "Survival" challenge isn't. Its an overnight camp out. Its fun, and anyone who thinks its more than that takes it, and themselves, too seriously. Good for you scoring the spork and the tent pegs. Sorry about the poison ivy ;) Thanks for the songs! I used to make my living playing guitar and now I'd love to play but the hands don't cooperate.) I hope to meet you in a park someday! I'll bring the scotch :)

The liner is heat cured at 200C. The pasturisation tempuratures are typically 121C. Boiling happens at 100C. The only link to human health and BPA in science is the possibility of obesity, no other metric shows it to be toxic. I'd say you were fine in using the can to cook in. Using found items like a spork is in no way cheating. You would have found a branch and used the knife to make a spoon had you not, the outcome is the same. Of course nothing you brought is waterproof at all, not since you took it out of the bag. I'd like to see you do this again, with "lessons learned from the last time".

The fact that you foraged for things like the spork is real because after all wouldn't we all be looking for things to make life easier in an emergency situation. I subscribed and I hope you decide to make more videos.

I'd have got coffee too...morale, caffeine & increases core temperature, brews as we called them in the British Army are important...but for 24 hours food I don't think some pop tarts & soup are adequate, not for me at least. So I'd have got a canned meal instead, I'm in the UK but looked on Dollartrees website, they have loads of hearty meals in cans, like ravioli, beef stew, spaghetti & meatballs, chicken & rice, or chicken & dumplings, so I'd have got 1 of those. For breakfast/snacks or even eating some with main meal I'd go for crackers - particularly like the look of peanut butter sandwich crackers, or possibly cookies - oatmeal cookies perhaps the most nutritious and probably you could boil them down in water to make porridge, guessing they contain sugar - or even nuts/trail mix which is one of the highest calorie foods out there, with lots of protein and healthy fats. That's just me though bro! Respect & liked your vid. Edit; Noticed it's only 24 hours so you only need 1 main meal; also I'd be a bit wary of using tins (cans) to cook in as they tend to have a plastic lining so since I wouldn't have bought a torch/flashlight *fire would have to do for night lighting) I'd buy a container...well Dollartree are a bit limited there but probably I'd go for metal mixing bowl, or maybe rectangular baking dish.

$10 Dollar Store Challenge take-away. 1. The ukulele, harmonica, & whiskey were not dollar store items and were not found items. They were comfort items that should not have been taken for the challenge. 2. You should definitely be more aware of your surroundings and clean up as you go. Though you claim (per another comment) that you left the area cleaner than you found it, the bag in the beginning could VERY easily have gotten away from you because you didn't even TRY to retrieve it past a passive lean-after, even after stopping filming for that segment and starting your build. 3. The vine usage was smart, but had you not had them, you should really learn how to double-wrap or quadruple-wrap your twine. You had enough of it to make it strong. 4. A shower curtain liner or similar item may have been smaller in size, but definitely would have been stronger. I would have put the plastic under me and then over the ridgeline instead of over both sides. 5. The other found item you never showed, the metal tent stakes, could have been used as a cooking surface for your can and/or toasting your pop tarts. Stick them into the ground to form a circle (or as close to it as you can manage) with the bent tops all facing inward. Then just place your items to be cooked on top.

Thanks, all good points. Interesting that the vine turned out to be poison ivy. I had learned to make twine into rope when I was in boy scouts but since the vine was there I took the easy faster solution. I really did take a lot of trash away from the area, including what I brought. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I hope your comments help someone reading them. Bob
