Dolby Atmos technology allows up to 128 audio tracks plus associated spatial audio description metadata (most notably, location or pan automation data) to be distributed to theaters for optimal, dynamic rendering to loudspeakers based on the theater capabilities. Each audio track can be assigned to an audio channel, the traditional format for distribution, or to an audio "object." Dolby Atmos by default, has a 10-channel 7.1.2 bed for ambience stems or center dialogue, leaving 118 tracks for objects.
Dolby Atmos home theaters can be built upon traditional 5.1 and 7.1 layouts. For Dolby Atmos, the nomenclature differs slightly: a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos system is a traditional 7.1 layout with four overhead or Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.
With audio objects, Dolby Atmos enables the re-recording mixer using a Pro Tools plugin (available from Dolby) or a Dolby Atmos equipped large format audio mixing console such as AMS Neve's DFC or Harrison's MPC5, to designate the apparent source location in the theater for each sound, as a three-dimensional rectangular coordinate relative to the defined audio channel locations and theater boundaries.
During playback, each theater's Dolby Atmos system renders the audio objects in real-time such that each sound is coming from its designated spot with respect to the loudspeakers present in the target theater. By way of contrast, traditional multichannel technology essentially burns all the source audio tracks into a fixed number of channels during post-production. This has traditionally forced the re-recording mixer to make assumptions about the playback environment that may not apply very well to a particular theater. The addition of audio objects allow the mixer to be more creative, to bring more sounds off the screen, and be confident of the results.
The first generation cinema hardware, the "Dolby Atmos Cinema Processor" supports up to 128 discrete audio tracks and up to 64 unique speaker feeds. The technology was initially created for commercial cinema applications, and was later adapted to home cinema. In addition to playing back a standard 5.1 or 7.1 mix using loudspeakers grouped into arrays, the Dolby Atmos system can also give each loudspeaker its own unique feed based on its exact location, thereby enabling many new front, surround, and even ceiling-mounted height channels for the precise panning of select sounds such as a helicopter or rain.

Nothing beats the first one at a theater. After those local commercials and trivia games in quiet, 2 dimensional sound emanating from some tiny front speakers. The bass is clean and deep, unlike what I get with Beats where bass is overbearing anf sounds like static. With he Galaxy Buds Pro, when you hear bass, you can feel the vibration on your making it feel more realistic

KZread only supports 2 channels we all are are listening stereo Dolby True Surround (5.1, 7.1, 9.1, 11.2 etc) which we can experience in Movie Theaters or home theater setup is actual true surround sound in which each speaker produces different sounds that comes from different directions and at different volumes so our 2 ears which are designed to tell us where is the source of sound gives us Real Surround Sound experience. But Dolby Atmos gives us similar (virtual) surround experience via Stereo Sound (2 channel regular Headphones) by blending different channels into 2 and playing with reverb. New Samsung Galaxy phones and many other brands have Dolby Atmos feature toggle it to feel the difference in your regular stereo headset.

It doesn't... But Dolby uploaded the 360 degree Binaural 3D Audio tracks so Headphone and Smartphone users WILL be hearing Dolby Atmos For Headphones and won't tell any difference. Lol....smartasses!

@Chris it isn't Dolby. Yes Because basically how Dolby works is with some devices and earphones there are mini speakers (1 small oval thingy) in the big speakers (9 small oval things each) Dolby atmos uses the mini speakers as well as it can to make good sound. While stereo only uses 1 big speaker. And KZread limits speaker to only 2 mini speakers or 2 big speakers. So there's stereo only.

Listened to this demo in Dolby PLIIz on my (decade plus old) Pioneer VSX-1127-K which have loved since plugging it in, having a 7.1 setup with 2 Sony SS-CSE Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers atop my legacy Pioneer CS-v975 4-way front towers, Energy CF-70 surround and Pyramid 4080 bookshelfs (rears and wides). Even without an DTS:X or Atmos capable amp this demo sounds amazing with sound moving all around the room. I have 11.1 speakers in the room albeit 2 are surround wide and 2 surround back, and the amp can ONLY drive 7.1 speakers itself so its either the front height OR front wide OR room 2 which I choose via a multi-port speaker switch. I ran the MCAAC room correction in my near 400sq ft listening space to ensure best distance accuracy and tonality. Having no access to DTS:X or Atmos with this amp, nor a similar setup, I've been trying to assess if I can justify an upgrade to a true 9.1 or 11.1 receiver with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos for $1600-2100-2500 or more... Would I notice a stand out improvement in spacial acuity? I've heard /watched videos suggesting that the content mixed into Atmos movies is sadly lacking, as if it was a lazily thrown in afterthought by the engineers. Seems like a lot of money for little gain, if any. Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.

Impressive for what we're hearing via headphones. Higher dynamic range than the typical KZread video...for obvious reasons (This was produced by Dolby...others by KZread Vlogger)...We do hear the separation and sound moving around us...but there's no way to simulate Atmos w/o discrete overhead speaker...4 being ideal...

Wasn't sure if my new Vizio soundbar was doing what the box said it was until I found this test video! VERY helpful to know that it truly depends on the sound's source. I sort of expected everything to sound incredible now. Soundbar instructions should suggest that people check out a KZread sound test video! Thanks!
