Doki Doki Literature Club: The Story of Dan Salvato

Ойындар

Doki Doki Literature Club is a game that's inspired by relationships; both the real life people that Dan Salvato has known, and his own "love-hate relationship" with anime games in general.
This feels like one of the most important videos we've done. BretonStripes is a psychologist who's worked extensively in mental health first aid over the years, and as such, it was fascinating to learn about the background for Doki Doki Literature Club and how Dan Salvato drew from real experiences with "loved ones" who suffer from depression in order to create the game.
While Dan has spoken publicly about the people who influenced DDLC, he's been notably vague about the specifics, and as such, we've tried to honour his silence by not prying too far or making assumptions about how much mental health issues have touched the people around him.
Also, it should be known that there are certain elements of Dan's friends that are deliberately absent from this video in other ways. The singer who sings DDLC's end credits song prefers to remain anonymous, and Dan's roommate similarly doesn't show his face online, so in this video, he's portrayed by one of our Patreon backers.
Kotor would also like to point out that he's no good at drawing Anime, and he hopes you won't judge his drawing too harshly here.
We've also added a content warning to the start of the video, as even though we speak in very broad terms about mental health, we want to make sure that you're aware of what's coming in advance.
Doki Doki Literature Club is an interesting game. It does rely very heavily on traumatic shocks, and in that respect it's probably more scary than any of the other horror games we've covered on this channel. Nevertheless, beyond the grotesque imagery, there is a genuine exploration of mental illness which is informed by personal experience, and that's something that doesn't appear in gaming very often.
Ultimately, there's a reason why this game has proven so popular with gamers of all backgrounds. As we like to say on this channel, good gameplay never goes out of style.
A big hello to everyone who read this far down the description, thanks for sticking around! We've had a really great week here at Video Game Story Time, as our video on Bendy and the Ink Machine has already rocketed up to become our third best video yet (after our first FNAF and Undertale videos).
Here's hoping we can keep up the momentum with this new one - do us a favour and share this far and wide so we can grow a little faster! We'd really appreciate it.
In the meantime, we're going to do some less scary games in the near future, we promise!
Have a great week!

Doki doki literature club made me realize that if I were to disappear it WOULD affect other people around me and that somebody WOULD notice I was gone. Without Sayori the club falls apart. Without Sayori I felt a sort of emptiness in my heart. Something was missing. I missed her. And it made me think "this is how people would feel if I were to disappear."

This is why DDLC is *not* dangerous for people who are suicidal, quite the contrary. I get the feeling they slapped that warning on there just to avoid liability, because when I look at Sayori's death and remember the suicidal years in my own life, I can only see it helping me. Portraying suicidal thoughts and extreme self-doubt as lies a sympathetic character is suffering under, then portraying that character's death as a tragedy for all concerned and an enormous loss for the game world, will communicate to suicidal people that they have value and would be sorely missed. It is not the sort of thing that will drive people to kill themselves, it is the sort of thing that would stay their hand, and to think otherwise betrays a lack of understanding about suicide.

I like how Moni's fourth wall breaking was handled. You could tell that as twisted as her reasons were, they were still there. She had logic behind her acts. Possibly screwy logic, yes, but still logic. Even if you don't understand her reasoning, you can tell there IS reasoning.

logical soundness is not reasonable unless it is valid. I think that you mean is that some things can be logically sound in form but not valid in that they admit a counterargument and are not completely water-proof. Monika's actions are not rational at all given that she imagines herself to be an entity meant to be part of the game when in reality she is more akin to a computer virus that infiltrates the game and messes with files on the user's desktop, program files and even causes images to appear. The game is designed this way but there's irony that she believes she's sentient or self-aware yet she doesnt realize her behavior proves she's just another piece of programmed code, albeit a misplaced one with harmful execution.

Mods that give people like Monika a shot at love when she wasn’t given her own route. I hope that he’s proud that there are others that are using his work and making something new out of it, adding onto the awareness of depression, mental illnesses, and just sadness and hard times in general, and that these people show the end result that people can change and that we can overcome our circumstances.

When Inception was released in 2010, I was hooked into it so much that I ended up reading fictional work that delved deeper, spun out, and even created new worlds out of the original work. One blog pointed out that (nv) "if one work of art produces a thousand more. then it becomes a compelling document of one's reality." And this is how I see the mods and fan work (and to an extension, the memes) in relation to the original game.

I find that this game's strength is the characters. Every game I've ever played has characters that are flat, one dimensional and didn't stick with me. Halo broke the trend of flat and one dimensional characters for me, but they still didn't stick with me long after playing, they didn't feel real, and I could still notice the screen I was looking through. But in Doki Doki, the characters were so beautifully crafted to feel real, that even though the short span of the game's first act was all the time that the game had for real character development, they felt like people, and I didn't forget them immediately after playing. I still think of them, and they're nearly friends to me. I just do not understand how it was done, but this game broke down the border between life and games for me, both with Monika's self awareness, and with my deep connection with the characters. Thank you, Dan Salvato, for giving me this. Microtransactions and corrupt companies have made gaming a sinking ship, but at least you'll send it out with a bang, from a genre where we least expect it.

I didn’t realise sayori was that deep, the subtle signs were all things dan had saw himself. Yet the deeper it is the more awareness it raises for people with depression or mental illness. Sayori is too relatable and it scares me for reasons I know too well. Constant “oversleeping”, hiding away from the world when energy levels too low, only wanting happiness for all around me all that stuff is ignored in today’s media or society. This raises awareness and that is why doki will forever be the story to help many through struggles of mental barriers. (Very low chance of dan himself seeing this but if he ever does or whatever just know thank you)

Yeah, this game left me depressed for several days. It's a lot for your brain to digest, and the sheer powerlessness you feel is not one that most gamers are accustomed to. You're supposed to have complete control over your game, you have the last word, not some diabolical brunette bent on killing everything she knows out of jealousy and sheer psychosis. In fact, I was actually really scared and anxious to watch this because I cannot imagine someone so evil as Monika actually existing. If there was, no doubt that a person would be devoted to exposing such a person to the world for scrutiny and personal closure in the form of fiction, hoping for some sort of answer to this psychosis. She is kind of a final boss of dating simulators. How do you romance an AI that knows it's all a game, and wasn't meant to be romanceable in the first place? How do you solve that? I personally wish there was a bit more closure. Like some sort of nod to forgiveness, like what Undertale did with Flowey/Asriel. If you could teach an AI forgiveness, that would be the absolute greatest achievement in a game about love with virtual characters. But I guess with the "powerlessness" of the player as Monika gives her post-deletion speech overrides the possibility of true communication. It certainly wouldn't make sense for her to figure out forgiveness entirely on her own. And since she broke the whole game by the end, there was no way for you to tell her otherwise, she trapped herself in her own prison. That loops back around to depression, I think! Perhaps that is the moral of the story, people destroy themselves and communication and support are essential for survival. People get caught up in dark things and let themselves get lost in them, leading to delusion and murder. Monika completely lost her mind and behaved like a real devil, all the way down to the rash, flailing accusations of torture. You don't get to see that firsthand a lot in video games, it's usually hammy and unconvincing. This is a masterpiece of personal horror.

@Monster School I've been through some pretty tough depression and I still don't like Monika. I really don't like any game or show that creates good things only to destroy them for shock value. And I believe this is why this game never had seven million sequels. I much prefer more positive games and wish it had a better ending or didn't exist at all. Any character that the audience has to fix is not a good character. It was the same with Vriska, you wouldn't like Vriska unless you'd read enough fanfics where she mellows out and has loose ends tied up. If you relate to either, I have pity for you and the people you were raised by. Even when I wasn't existentially crushed by unknown forces, I didn't like DDLC and I avoid it like the plague.

  • @JakesFavorites

    @JakesFavorites

    3 жыл бұрын

@Monster School If you want more detail, I think Monika is terrible because she is no more real than the girls she kills. She's psycho and doesn't know her place and the ending just pretends everything is fine. But there is no happy ending. For some extra special context, I'm an exorcist. I've fought against actual demons both inside and outside of other people for the better part of a decade and Monika manages to be worse than all of them. Ancient beings, some with wide-reaching influence bent on power and control, outdone by a green-eyed video game thot. There is some serious evil that went into the making of this game. Actual real-world devilry is easier to dispatch. Just remember that, for scale. You can't pray this game into becoming good. Do not make me think about it any more. And thank you for your well-wishes. :3 This game would have a serious body count if it came out in lockdown.

I never played a visual novel before ddlc. I found an article in tvtropes and after reading the description i decided to give it a shot. I was confused by how this game would be scary at all and why did it have the warning in the beginning. Then i got at the end of act 1 and i was in tears. I had to wait until the next day to keep playing. No videogame before treated depression in such a realistic manner. The closest i can think is welcome to the nhk and even that book pokes a little fun at satou's life. But this game really clicked with me. Your video is very well made, it shows your effort and respect to the media and the creator you are exposing in such a manner that i didn't get bored at all, even knowing most of the information beforehand. I will say, as someone who has personal experience with depression, and uses journals as a way to cope with it, Doki Doki Literature Club has helped me. Writing is something that helps me cope with depression, or any kind of stress or anxiety, so playing this game and not only connections with characters, both due to their mental struggles and just personality and interests in general, just helps me feel more inspired to keep going. When I can’t bring myself to write down my exact thoughts in a journal, I use poems as a way to write down what I’m feeling, without having to risk having all my thoughts and feelings written out for everyone to see. I know this isn’t really what the game was meant to do, but Dan’s game helped me in a way I couldn’t thank him enough for, and DDLC is one of my favorite games.

Katawa Shoujo Portrayed disabilities with more tact then similar VNs (or possibly other media) before it. Steins;Gate isn't horror, that's for certain. It's more like a Michael Crichton sci-fi thriller, which can get intense, but more of: "how do they escape the baddies?" I think that the presentation and voice acting in Steins;Gate was actually better in the Visual Novel than the anime adaptation that came out. It's definitely NOT a "cute girls doing cute things" Visual Novel. It's heavy sci-fi and deals with the implications of time travel very well.

I feel few people right now pay attention to the minds behind the amazing games we have nowadays, and having someone actually give their "adventures" from someone with a vision to successful developers a proper entretaining and well told narrative feels just so nice and right. I think what really struck me about this game is that it genuinely managed to make me feel sad for fictional characters. I have a hard time empathizing with other people, or just understanding emotions in general (a couple of my friends are 'convinced' that I'm a cyborg, based on my love of academics and lack of understanding of emotion), but this game managed to make me sympathize with the characters so much that it almost felt like empathy. I had even figured out from Sayori's second poem that she was depressed, and when there was no music Monday morning, I had suspected that she may have killed herself. I knew it was coming, but it still managed to make me fell genuine shock and terror when that scene happened, and later, sadness. Did the majority of me recognize that she's a fictional character, and that I was overreacting? Yes, yes it did, but throughout the second act, there was always that feeling of 'this isn't right, Sayori should be here...' I even had trouble deleting Monika during the third act, since the way she was written was so convincing that she's an AI trapped in a simulation, not just a programmed character, despite the logical, main portion of me knowing that she is. I still don't know what the game did to actually make me feel emotion for fictional characters, despite me barely understanding emotion outside of the neurological (and that understanding is still limited) aspect, but whatever it did, it did it right.

Yes, I fully agree but wasn't sure how to describe my thought. But I love that it makes me feel such a strong feeling of sympathy for all 4 of the characters (just in different ways)

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for making this video. I have to admit, after watching a playthrough of this game, I couldn't call myself a fan, but this explanation of Dan Salvato's motivation behind it gave me some very helpful perspective. I might be a little biased since I'm not a fan of psychological horror, violence, or sexual innuendos, but I can't deny that Doki Doki Literature Club did a fantastic job of throwing players off, creating relationships between them and the characters (and having some fun with them), and exploring mental illnesses. That last part could've been done more tastefully, but the game does have a lot of good things to say on the topic, so I think Mr. Salvato accomplished that goal very well. Again, thanks for helping me understand the ideas behind the game a little better. : )

How you are really speak in a such a soft and respectful voice (did I mention how nice your voice sounds?) and it truly just made me happy, and that's not even touching upon the message you carried at the conclusion of your video. Stay well and many well wishes to you love!

Great episode. I love DDLC. Also, I know you’re busy considering A Hat In Time, but perhaps you could cover Hiveswap after that as well (maybe somewhere close to when the second act comes out in spring)? It would be interesting for you to cover Hussie’s five year struggle in development hell because of his falling out with The Odd Gentlemen, as well effecting his work progress on Homestuck.

My friend who had struggled with depression for a while played the game blind a while ago. He stopped after Act I and plans to pick it back up again when he has free time, but he particularly liked the writing around Sayori. Although she wasn't his favorite character, he related with her and was able to figure out her depression after the first day.

I really did enjoy this game and of course I related a little too much to Sayori which was the point. Whenever I see characters in games, I know they are fake, but I have never treated one as though they were, considering the creator most likely used his/her own personal experiences to craft them, meaning that they are as much real people as you and I. I have barely met anyone on this planet considering how large our population is, so whenever I see a video game character it's as if I met them on the street or something and got to know them, kind of in the ways that movies work. I think his game eloquently achieved what he hoped it would, and I am glad to have experienced it, but I was left with a few little flaws that really don't amount to anything when you consider the purpose of the game as a whole. I think giving the player the ability to add an delete characters from the game when they needed to to be a wonderful mechanic, however, I don't think Salvato really thought about the level to which characters would mess around with them and I think way too many shortcuts were made. Of course players are going to play a second time after seeing their beloved childhood friend Sayori kill herself and try to put her back in the game once they realize the characters are there, but there really was no mechanic in place to deal with this. Obviously there is a limit on how much you can do with this given the uncertainty of when players will add/remove characters from the folder, but when players did the game wouldn't acknowledge 95% of them until you quit and came back in, and only then it would give you the "end" screen (or one of a few). I think the game would have been my absolute favorite game of all time if it actually did that mainly because this kind of stuff is right up my alley, and it would have made the story so much deeper and really made the player feel like the game was in control the whole time. My last little thing is a question: when did Salvato decide he wanted to link this game to his (presumed) next game? I don't think it's a stretch to gather that from all of the easter eggs left behind considering how in-depth they were. I think it would have been a great opportunity for Salvato to do a little more with the add/remove characters mechanic because that could have even led to different theories on how exactly this second game will relate. These are just my own thoughts and opinions, however, so feel free to ignore them, hate them, or discredit them because I do want to know if I am interpreting something wrong or something. Thanks for listening for anyone who read my long paragraph...
