Those people are legally entering the country. Seeking asylum is a human right protected by US and international law. They have to be in the country and apply for asylum within one year. It’s not illegal.

@@tonyetzu No, they're entering illegally. You have to go to a port of entry to seek asylum. Even if a person goes to a port of entry, it's not automatically guaranteed approved either. An asylum can be denied. The fact remains, they don't have to choose to come to the U.S. there other countries they could go to or remain in their country of origin, make the sacrifce and fight for what they want.

Because, this is Democracy Now! and it's farther left compared to most news outlets considering the political climate. And that's really sad, because I listened to Amy growing up on the radio and it didn't start getting this bad until the early 2000's. Might as well start getting my news from Vox, Alternet, or The Daily Beast while I'm at it. /s But realistically I try to stick to Reuters, The Hill, Forbes, and BBC New's main outlet. But even those have their faults and aren't very centered. The Hill for example has the single most ditsy Dem/left host. BBC is wrapped around international powers fingers. NATO, UN, etc. Very hard to get solid news though Reuters and Forbes have been my go-to primarily then I go and watch some other political leaning perspectives. Something my English teacher taught me back when; "Everyone has a bias."

Surely the biggest crime here is encouraging people to make this journey, be exploited and abused all the way. Long before they get to that particular border. Why? To work for next to nothing of they find legitimate work at all. In Europe it was to disenfranchise what corporations think of as overpowered workers councils and workers rights legislation by disenfranchising people and causing wage attrition. It backfired enormously as we now know that the vast majority cannot integrate in any meaningful way. So it ended up really harming the poorest and most vulnerable on both sides.

The only ones encouraging them to come here are Republican lawmakers and propagandists claiming that the border is open. They want the chaos because they actually have nothing to offer but fear. The real irony is, is that the US economy easily absorbs them as an underclass workforce and the economy overall is larger because of their presence. They have no effect whatsoever on overall unemployment for other Americans. They wouldn't be coming if they didn't easily find employment, and they're all pretty much fully employed typically working far more than 40 hours a week.

@@hectorvega621 It's not how I feel. It's how the law is written. Asylum is when you are being persecuted in a neighboring country and you go to the nearest country (within reason). Asylum is not flying halfway around the world to a US bordering country and then try to sneak across via the cartels. We DO accept TRUE asylum-seekers from any country. But it must be ACTUAL PERSECUTION! When you come across simply to seek a better life, that's migratory, not Asylum. The only thing we've done to true asylum-seekers is push them back further because of the illegality of others. Like everything else now, we're punishing the law-abiding to make way for the criminal. So this isn't how I feel, it's fact, backed by laws. A country must be able to vet and control who enters its borders. Otherwise, you end up with a situation with like what we've got. You have other countries such as China, North Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, should I go on? Besides thier general population, they're sending their criminals, and people here NOT for a better life, but for other nefarious reasons. This is insanity and is not sustainable. In order to have a secure and peaceful nation, you MUST have secure borders.

If buoys with razor wire are inhumane because they pose a danger to people attempting illegal passage, then it logically follows that prison razor wire, armed guards, police, or even just "No Trespassing" signs or full or partial fences are also inhumane, because they also pose a danger to people attempting illegal passage...either because they are a direct threat, or because they might cause people to choose a more dangerous alternative passage. How can you possibly justify the use of any of these preventative measures, since they are all inhumane, by your standards.

Just so everybody knows this reporter has a large fence around her property. And when somebody tried to jump it two months ago, she called the cops on them...

Some legal immigrants wait for over 15 years or more, and then the US government because of their rules break the families of legal immigrants. Why the US rules and laws apply to all, legal and illegal immigrants. Why legal immigrants are supposed to comply with all the requirements of the US, wait years in line, while the illegals get in front of the line and are welcomed by certain groups of the government. Where is the fairness?

If you think the border should be wide open, how about you take 10 or more into your home and feed and care for them? I didn’t think so.

Imagine you had barb wire around your house and criminals were telling children to break into your house anyways - and you were the bad guy!

While I understand that it's an analogy, I do have to say that surprisingly, you'd still have potential legal issues if that was an actual literal situation. (Depending on jurisdiction perhaps.) There are cases where people who have gotten injured or trapped on a property they were trespassing on actually have sued the property owners. (And that was without intended "security measures") One aspect of the actual issue is that it's the international equivalent of brutalist anti-homeless design that some cites take. It doesn't stop the issue. It just tries to move, hide, and ignore the issue.
