Doing This Added a TON of Space

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It’s time to upgrade my old storage cabinet to sleek Euro-style plywood woodshop cabinets. The metal cabinet in my shop was a hand-me-down and had seen better days. Enter these plywood cabinets made from baltic birch and maple plywood. Hanging these cabinets on the wall opened up a lot of floor space in the woodshop. And adding the shelf pins makes it easy to accommodate anything I need to store. This cabinet is a perfect solution for storage in any workshop.

I like the simplicity of the cabinets and how you designed them to curve back so as not to interfere with using the jointer. I prefer to use different types of joinery on my shop furniture, so I can practice, and hone my skills. I've been studying and practicing Japanese jointery for almost 2 years now, and I have only touched the tip of the amount of joinery they use in furniture and structure builds. Many of the smaller cabinets and furniture builds done in the traditional style do not use glue , nails, or screws. The joints have very tight tolerances so you don't need them. I just picked up a book on Korean joinery and I look forward to tackling them. Pocket holes and butt joints are fast and easy, but not a challenge and that is what I love about this craft. After 50 years of woodworking, I'm always learning and never bored with it. Keep doing your thing, it suits you.

Absolutely! Japanese joinery is the pinnacle. For this one I’m more going for convenience since it’s just shop furniture but elevating the joinery for a furniture piece is always a fun challenge.

Yes shelf pins. If you need them, they're already done. If you don't - they don't get in the way. And for a shop, I'd double up and put everything on wheels that I can - cause what are the chances I laid the shop out correctly for every project? Nil. So, moving things lets the shop adjust to me rather than needing me to adjust to the shop.

Yes shelf pins for lightweight stuff, for medium weight, use holes that go all the way and bolt the shelves, and for heavier stuff, cut boards the width of the shelf, and the height between each shelf, then screw that to the back. You can add angles to support the front and don the same on the side if it's still too heavy. Using some laths for less heavy duty shelves works too, and you can always move that by unscrewing them and screwing them at an other height, than add a sticker on the old holes. Though you can do that with a shelf pin setup or any shelf. I'll add, use whatever you want for furniture, as long as it looks good enough to you and does its job, it doesn't need to be perfect.

Yes shelf pins! Having flexibility and not needing to use it is always preferable to not having them and finding you suddenly need to store something that won't fit and you have to disassemble your cabinet just to have somewhere to put it. I'd always rather overbuild than underbuild a solution.

I'll vote "Yes shelf pins". Doesn't seem like a lot of work, and allows for adjustability down the road when you want to change things up (even if that doesn't always happen). Personally though, I feel like I'm changing up my organizational systems on the regular when I find stuff doesn't work.

Even if I'm likely to never move a shelf once it's been installed, I like having the option to do so that shelf pins offer. Obviously, if you attach a shelf permanently, that option goes away. That isn't to say that permanent shelves don't have their place (fine furniture et al.). But for shop storage (and bookcases), building in flexibility is always a good thing.

Baltic Birch Plywood….of course! Of course! In UK it runs at 300 USD (appx converted) per single 8x4 sheet. Let me say that again 300 Bucks! It ain’t happening for a basic cabinet carcass mate…not unless we win the national lottery! Your build video is enjoyable, props for the work…

Yes and no pins. To me it depends on the situation. I actually do use the adjustment capabilities of cabinets over the course of time and like the pins for that reason. Most of the cabinets I built in my garage shop doesn't have pins and it works for my needs. Great video, Shane. The flow of the video was good and the story was easy to follow (and the dad jokes are on point). That curve you put on the RHS cabinet is also such a good idea! It just ties the cabinets together nicely and adds to the shop aesthetic. Also, I love Blum hardware. So much so that people look at me strangely when I get excited when I discover they have Blum hinges and runners in their kitchen... Yes, I know it's weird but I do notice these things.
