Doing an oil change on my car, by myself, for the first time, with zero knowledge of cars... 😀

My car has been needing an oil change for a while now and I thought it would be fun if I could teach myself how to do an oil change. Why? I don't know, I guess that's just how boring my life has gotten.
Jokes aside, it's pretty empowering to learn new things and I'm proud of myself for pushing myself to do something difficult :) I hope you enjoy watching this mess.

few tips: 1. DONT use a scissor jack and go under the car! that's very dangerous! use jack stands and either put it under the pinch weld or the frame of the car. 2. when draining the oil if you take the oil cap off on the top of the engine it will help flow out and drain faster. 3. when you are filling up the oil you can poor it with the bottle side ways to make the oil flow out smoother to prevent a mess. 4. check the dipstick first before starting and get it obviously not empty and not to full. I usually do just a lil more between. then let it run to fill up the oil filter and check the oil again and fill it up if needed cause the oil will run through the filter

As an actual mechanic, I will forever throw shade at AutoZone or car part stores because they think they're mechanics when they're actually not. They should've known you needed oil pliers and not a socket for your filter. You either have paper or container style filters. They get stuff wrong all the time. Also, I'd get a longer 14 wrench to allow leverage to make taking that drain bolt off way easier. I love seeing people doing this kinda stuff on their own.

Please don't get under your car without ramps or jack stands. You're using a scissor jack and I actually had one fail on me before and my car fell on top of me. Be safe out there

Congrats on your success! The comments are excellent safety advice! I will add, when you check the oil level, pull out the oil dip stick. With a rag or paper towel, wipe off the deep stick tip ( up about 4 inches) then put it back in and pull it out and you will easily see what the oil level is. You are doing fantastic! Love your videos❤

I'm sitting here screaming turn it the other way you turning it the wrong way. I am so proud of you little lady. I helped my brother take apart a motor once and it was one of my favorite memories with him. I would love to be able to do what you did. And when it didn't start, I was like I think that's the battery, then the dip stick reading.....but you are so fun to watch. Great Job. Don't forget for the next job, Righty Tighty, Lefty Lucy. I was cringing when you were yanking that sump plug and the car was shaking just being on a jack. It could very easily have dropped and crushed you. Very lucky escape, imo. Always use jack stands if you're going under a car. Never rely on the jack alone! Respect for doing this yourself, but always put safety first. Please!

Yeah, I'm bringing my car over bcuz hey, if anyone knows the correct procedure for an oil change at this point, it's you! 😂 As far as what you should do next, I'd say continue the car series lol. Maybe do something else for the Corolla that you've never done, but have been wanting to tackle. Or maybe change Lily's oil! 😂 Your cooking Shorts are funny too, so maybe cook or bake something new in a longer form video? I think your charisma, sense of humor, humility, and intelligence jumps off the screen, so keep doing what you're doing! its better to break the oil pan bolt loose and then loosen it by hand so you don't drop it in the oil, wont get your hand dirty if you pull away quick at the end. maybe just a bit on finger tips. that tool you didnt know is a Ratchet. the black circle on the back switches which way it works, for tightening or to loosen something. if you buy a 14mm socket for it (probably a half inch or 3/8 drive, the square part on the head) then itll make it easier to take bolts off. you dont really need it if youre only doing oil changes since its only one but itll save you time from having to reset the wrench since you just turn it the other way and itll spin and click. for the oil levels on the dip stick it just has to be in the min and max dots. pull it out wipe it clean, insert it for 2-3 seconds, pull it out and look at the line of oil on the stick.

You did it! Good job. I had my doubts. I will follow you. Word of caution, like others mentioned, more people have been crushed under their car using flimsy scissor jacks like that. That jack is meant for emergency tire change in which you don't go under the car. You should get a couple of jack stands and have them in place before getting under the car to be safe. Better yet is to get a good floor jack too, Harbor Freight has good ones.

Great job, Isa. If you look in your owner's manual in your glove box and look under capacities. There you will find the amount of oil in quarts your engine takes. That way you know how much to put back into your engine and be confident it is the right amount. And always as you did, replace the oil filter with every oil change. The oil filter needs to be hand tightened. As tight as possible with your hand. And when removing the oil filter, always remember to check and make sure the rubber gasket is still intact on the oil filter you have taken off. Sometimes they will stick to the engine. You don't have to worry, the gasket stayed in place when you removed the oil filter. The oil pan drain plug needs to be good and snug with your wrench. Not supper tight, just good and snug. You don't want your drain plug to unloosen and lose your oil. That would not be good. I enjoyed watching your determination to change your own oil. Now that you've done it once, it should be a piece of cake the next time. Oh, and another very important thing you should always do before going under a jacked-up car. Buy some safety jacks. If the car for some reason ever fell off the jack you used to lift the car, it could crush you. Thanks for sharing your first oil and filter change. You will be an inspiration to others, I'm sure. May the Lord bless you and your family.
