Doing a Mystery Jigsaw Puzzle from the Thrift Store (It's BAD.)

In this video, I solve a Lantern Press puzzle in a generic black box that I found at a thrift store. What will we find when we open it?

It’s hilarious to me that someone bought that puzzle, opened up the box, saw the picture and noped the eff out. That’s EXACTLY what I would have done 😂

Your technique of taking one piece out and comparing it to the rows of pieces was brilliant! We bought one of these at an antique mall a few months ago, it too was unopened, and the pieces all appear to be pink. Like, all of them. So we’re definitely going to try this method whenever we’re brave enough to put it together.

OK, you need a little handheld whisk broom for the puzzle dust. I fear for your pieces hitting the floor with that big broom. I also employ the strategy of removing a piece from the puzzle and going along the rows of sorted ones to find a match. I was just about to give my pro tip of putting a coin down so you can remember where you got the piece from, when you pulled out a washer. Great minds and all that. To speed it up, I put the rows of pieces on a tray of some sort so you can rotate the whole thing. Then you can check the left side for example, rotate the tray 180 degrees and check the new left side. It saves time over checking the top, and then the bottom as you were doing.

I'm so glad the KZread algorithm put this video in front of me! Subscribed right away. 😊 I love doing puzzles without knowing the image. I have my husband bring me just the pieces of a puzzle in my collection, but he sometimes buys them for me in secret, so I can't even be sure it's something I've seen before. My favorite one I did this way was Evening on the Town by Big Ben Luxe. If you look it up, you'll see all the swirly bits that were maddening. I didn't know what the car was until I'd done all of that section except about three pieces. Super fun and so gratifying! I am actually working on a Lantern Press puzzle right now. Bigfoot in Van Gogh's Starry Night. Same puzzle pieces as this one -- all the same shape. It's very slow going, but your method of holding one piece and scanning it against the others is one I haven't seen before and will definitely try. I hope you continue sharing videos. 😁 Really enjoying your channel so far.

@@puzzlephile It came in a standard sort of box with the image on the front and also included a poster. I've shopped some of their other puzzles and like a lot of the images, but honestly I'm not sure I'll try another one because of the frustrating piece shapes. I'm also a little disappointed that there's quite a bit of glare on the pieces, especially since the box specifically claims there's not any.

Ecru used to have a series of "mystery" puzzles. They didn't have the image on the website or on the outside of the box, but they had a sticker sheet with the image, puzzle name, etc, which came upside down at the bottom of the box so you could label your box after you did the puzzle. (Downside, they were quite expensive even for wooden puzzles. But the one I did that way I really liked.)

I am scared of puzzles like that where all the pieces are the same shape! I was glad to see that there is some variation in size of the notches on the pieces, so you were able to find the right pieces. I have a puzzle from the thrift store of repeated images of jellyfish where all the pieces are the same shape. I am not sure I will ever do it because I need to be able to use the shape of the piece to put the puzzle together.

Quite recently I completed the 'Nightfall' 2000 puzzle by Educa which has an older piece cut back from 2006, almost identical to the mystery puzzle in the video. I sorted the piece shapes by their shared characteristics and worked similarly as you did (on A3 foam boards that I could rotate). It was approximately 300 pieces of dark brown. With glare as added effect. 😂

  • @puzzlephile

Ok here’s the thing with that puzzle. I’ve actually been intending to remove it from my intro. I hesitate to promote the company that sells it because they have repeatedly stolen artists’ works to make their puzzles, reproducing the images without license or attribution. I wasn’t aware of this when I created my intro, and I will probably replace the fox soon. (The fox itself doesn’t seem to be a stolen image, as far as I can tell.) The company is AimPuzzle - the quality of their puzzles is not terrible, but nothing special. Personally, I’d rather spend my money elsewhere, but of course everyone can make their own choices! Just wanted you to have all the info, which I’m sure is a lot more of an answer than you were expecting!!
