Nobody captured the surf to skate style better than Oster. He was the only skater in my eyes that rivaled Hosoi in style on the street back in those days, and I felt like he edged him. He did a demo at Lynnhaven Mall in Virgina Beach with Hosoi, Hackett, Ventura and maybe Dressen was there too. They were signing afterwards, and I had nothing for them to do so on so I got the latest edition of Thrasher Mag at a Walden's bookstore and it just so happen to be the issue where the last page was Oster's tweaked frontside grind in a pool wearing the leopard print converse for an Indy trucks ad. They all signed it and passed it around as if they had not seen it in the issue yet. He was really cool. I still have that and his Dogtown board edition. I slashed and g-turned to mimic him. I was still skating when the flip trick era began but there was still nothing like the glide of slashing a bank and holding out on the board as it gave the sensation of sliding out from under you while you went to face-plant but somehow the force kept you on- the harder, the faster, the better the stick. Never felt that way with a flip trick.

This song ive been singing im my head for the last 3months every since iseen this video

My first board was a "Stonefish". Looking at pictures in Thrasher and Transworld I was drawn to that Dogtown vibe and attitude. Getting into skateboarding in the 80s was a magical experience for a teenager.

We had a little side street that dead-ended in our neighborhood next to a field. That's where all the skaters hung out and I called it "Dogtown." We had a few launch ramps, and my friends even built a mini half-pipe. Skating was our sub-culture.
