I remember the sign, I saw one in a residential neighborhood after returning from a deployment in 1980, it wasn't homemade.

I have seen it numerous times. I used to go to Oceanview Amusement Park, on the walk there many yards had these signs in the 60s and 70s.

Amazing! I lived in the Lenox/Ocean View area for 11 years, took my daughter for walks all through the area and never once saw any signs.

I saw the sign professionally printed in the median where little creek road meets military highway when I was stationed there in 1973 dogs and sailors keep off the grass it said I also remember being refused service at a diner just because I was in the navy. no trouble my buddy and I left. never to return to that place to eat. it was worst in California where moonie chicks would walk right up to you call you baby killer and spit in your face. at the airport. the airlines didn't treat you well either. one poor army guy on the same flight I was having his in flight meal served to him the united AA stewardess brought him his tray and dumped it in his lap of his dress uniform. poor guy. I was lucky the other attendant on the flight actually served me like anyone else saved my dress whites from food stains.

Not a legend a fact. Was there and I saw the sign myself. Also the attitude in the late 70/80's in Norfolk was that you were less than human to be in the service. This also applied in Charleston SC.

I was in Norfolk from 5/80-5/89 and you were definitely treated differently when they knew that you were in the Navy.
