Dog takes owner for ride in dog cart

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Heidi Douts recently tooled around Long's Park on a cool afternoon. She was riding in her DPV, or dog-powered vehicle. Aya, a Rottweiler, pulled Douts on a three-wheeled cart fashioned from a bicycle and a jogging stroller. Read more: lancasteronline.com

To anyone who doesn't like this -- Rottweilers were originally working dogs bred for pulling! Now they are mostly bred for companionship, but that doesn't change what they were originally designed to do!

@@1111111111202 -- It can get "exciting" at times... :) Especially when you are first training them and they see no problem with running in front of you from one side to the other and you have to slam on your brakes. I had to slam on my brakes once and the leash was in the hand that controlled the rear brake, so I when I hit the front brake with the other hand, I ended up flipping forward and going face first towards the pavement. You really don't want slack to develop in the leash and they cross over either since that could result in it getting tangled with the front wheel with a similar outcome... Let's just say that it is a "learning experience" for both the rider and the dog... :)

Gonna be training my dog to do this when I can afford a cart. She’s 40 lbs and a staffy mix but I’m loosing weight and she’s already able to pull way more than expected in a sled, and a cart seems like it would be easier for her to pull. This dog can run for hours and not get tired and we don’t have a treadmill to run her on so I think something like this would be good for her.

I love it. The dog is enjoying it. Rotties are related to Swiss Mountain dogs like the Bernese and Great Swiss Mountain dogs. Those breeds were used as pulling dogs to pull carts with 6 huge milk cans. It was one of the things they were bred for. That's why the Greater Swiss is the strongest pulling dog in the world. It has the world record.

I am in EXACTLY the same situation!!! My service dog is going to be a Dobermann (the European kind, since I live in west Europe). I've already researched (dog) threadmills and backpacks to make sure he could spend his energy while I lay in bed, but this idea is so much better! I wouldn't need a disability scooter either to go on walks ^_^. If you make this electric you could also let the dog loose for some much-needed sniffing time as well. Great idea! (Edit:) I got this video from a dog cart plans site, it has a LOT of ideas and info. Good luck with it! www.make-and-build-dog-stuff.com/dog-cart-plans.html

GimmitheBong you’re incredibly an educated human. Look at the cart that the owner is riding in, it has petals for heaven sake‘s she’s assisting. Rottie’s definitely need to have responsibilities, tasks even in short bursts. Otherwise you’re going to see couches shredded and Wood trim devoured within the home. Of course you would never choose to employ a dog that is too small or the wrong breed. Take into consideration if temperature are too high or low. Even though our breed would not be suited for this activity, if my Australian Shepard does not have a job to do our house becomes her den of destruction.

Difference between a horse and buggy and a dog and buggy is that a horse is fucking massive and a dog generally isn't...? Literally even the biggest dog breeds on the planet like mastiff types only hit the 200lbs range whereas if you Google horse weight it comes up in the 800 to 2,000lbs+. On top of that, many horse breeds not only outweigh but loom over the average person whereas only a few dog breeds can reach lengths comparable to human height. That's why nobody bats an eye at one horse pulling one person but eyebrows get raised when you replace said horse with a dog. (Not _dogs,_ mind you, as nobody would care since multiple animals means less load.)

I have been trying to find a cart like this one!! I like that it can be taken apart for traveling. I would prefer 3 wheels to put less pressure on the dog's frame.

I want to do this with my Argentine Dogos. I think they would LOVE this. Dogos love having things to do; they love having jobs. And they are a powerful breed. Something like this would be right up their alley.

That was a great video! I could see how excited Aya was in the car, you couldn't hook the cart up fast enough for her, haha. She is probably the nicest Rottweiler I've ever seen, very sleek and muscled out nicely. Do you have diy plans for this cart? The carts online are outrageous! This spring I will be purchasing a team cart and harness for my sons Shetland ponies, and I'd like to get a cart for my husbands pointer/ lab mix. Then we can all go carting one day. My mare is already trained to pull a cart, but I can totally picture my husband being pulled by his dog, my son being pulled by his pony team, and me driving my trusty mare! I have a store where I can get a jogging stroller for cheap, but not sure what parts I would need. Any tips or advice would be wonderful!

Rottweilers aren't particularly prey driven and can easily be trained not to chase squirrels and rabbits. Squirrels would come right up next to my Gideon because he radiated gentleness. My Bruno was the same way. I watched him bump noses with a ground hog once.
