Dog Recall and the Effective Use of the Whistle

Correct use of the dog whistle can make all the difference in your dog's recall!
This video look at how to use the recall whistle to best effect with your dog. Blowing the whistle too gently can lead to a lacklustre performance from your dog, so be sure to use some energy, combined with good body language and high-value food (or a favourite toy if your dog prefers that). You can see how three short and clear blasts let Max know that it's time to return.
All of my dogs recall most promptly when I use the whistle, this is because I usually combine it with some high-value food such as slices of liver! Experiment to see what your dog's favourite food is!
A recall that is quick and effective allows your dog to have more freedom on the basis that you can call him back to you at any point in time. Add in lots of practice under a variety of different situations/distractions for a recall that will make you proud of your dog!

LOL My dog, who was whistle trained before we got him at a rescue, has come in from the other room, sleepy eyed and looked at me as if to say - waddya want!

It works
This is a great video. And Max is getting so much more looking like his breed hahaha and growing into his beard. You must feel like a father your son as a baby now he is grown up and has a beard haha funny

how do you do the second one? i seem to be doing it wrong, can you show us how you like actually do it
I have a very head strong 18 month old cocker spaniel , I have no fear of her running off and and getting lost but her recall is terrible she will go where her nose takes her , no matter what treats I use even chicken , just doesn't come when called , very loyal in doors but outside in the fields is a different dog she just doesn't listen .

You’ll need to take your dog through the various stages of long line training to ensure that each recall is effective.
I have just got a springer , would you advise training with whistle? If so have you any tutorials? She is 8 week very bright , she is sitting , fetching nearly staying but I’m doing it by call and treats along with praise . She is a great dog so I want her to be brilliant . Any help would be greatly appreciated

Voice first and then intro to the whistle yes. I've no direct videos on that subject, but plenty online on how to introduce the whistle. Sorry for the massive delay in responding.
With a silent whistle you don't have to worry....cos you can't hear it. But the dog can.

The variety I use are audible to the human ear :)

I just bought a whistle the other day. My question is I have a 7 month old puppy who has selective hearing he is pretty good on some of his commands but I'm having a really hard time with him jumping on me & biting me. I am home all day with him training him and playing with him I'm at my wits end with this puppy. So my question is can I use the dog whistle for no jumping and no biting?

Don't know how I missed your question, so sorry. I wouldn't use a whistle to correct that behaviour, no. Something like a lead on the dog, so that when that happens you can quickly regain control and lead it away from the space for a time out for one minute then try again. Thanks
