Your title is misleading. These tips don't help a dog to chew his food. Slowing down and chewing are two different things. My dog still throws up most of the time. Doesn't matter how slow I feed him.

If he’s throwing up every time no matter what the dog needs to go to the vet. It could have a medical issue.

This is a nicely done video but besides the one that says wet the food, the other 9 tips only keep the food away from the dog one way or another and doesn't address the underlying problem. Which is what I am sure most of the people were looking for. I am looking for "why" do they inhale the food whole and what I can do about it. Not really what games i can play to slow it down. Thanks for making the video though.

I think it's a behavioral thing, maybe they had to fight for food as pups or they assume it's going to be taken. My dog if I don't stand there or close by he will eat as fast as he can to follow me and see what I'm doing. He used to actually chew but still gulped like he never ate in his life. He has dental issues now as he he's gotten older, so he just swallows and gulps. I'm just glad he's eating but I do want him to relax a bit.

Tried the 'busy box' method and the 'scatter' method. Both worked well at slowing our canine vacuum cleaner down just a bit. Enjoyable to watch as well!

We have the same slow feed bowl, but our 10 weeks old Lab pup when emptied after a meal pick it up and caries it around, too cute

I’m going to try all of them!! I’m dog sitting my grand-pup & have never experienced anything like this 😱😱😱😱

We literally just got our puppy a day ago. We have a few of the options and so far he loves a regular bowl and a puzzle bowl. I haven't tried the other methods yet but will over the next few weeks. For the moisture on his kibble, instead of water, we add bone broth or keffir. He seems to love both.

I feed my 19 week old his lunch in the Bob-a-lot every single day. He loves it, and it helps tire him out just a little more. But, most of all, I love that it slows his eating down which was the main goal.

Will put chammomile tea more often on my dog's food. Also will get a slow feeder bowl.

you see i've tried at least 8 out of the 10 options and, my problem is not just the fast eating, but my golden retrievers just don't chew!!! rarely do i hear a crunch out of the kibble. PLEASE HELP??? thoughts? suggestions?

I understand your problem!! If I give my dog one little piece of kibble a time still she eats it without chewing. Not chewing in our case is different from eating fast!! How is your dog, did you try something that worked?

@@carlaf.1226 this is my problem as well. I rescued a bulldog who is 8 months old and he had zero training. He was house broken and that's it. He doesn't just eat fast, he swallows without chewing! I sit and get him one at a time and yet he still won't chew! I can't do this every single meal! SOS!!!!

I thought I was the only one. I have a Pit Mix and he goes crazy every time I feed him. I’ve tried several of these options before even coming to this video and he still won’t chew. Rarely do I hear him bite the food. It’s like he chews a massive amount of food at once and he swallow it. Are you still having the same problem ?

The only method i've been using on my puppy is the training one. mainly because then he is more motivated to do what i ask xD

@how to train dream dog. Just wonderful, I been tryin to find out about "what food is best for dogs with skin allergies?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Donulian Astounded Dominion - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to discovering the secret the dog food industry is hiding without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got excellent success with it.

Thanks this will help but even though my dog eats slow he still won’t chew when he was younger he chewed his food but now he just gulps it

We divide between a puzzle and a slow feeder bowl. and use some for training treats.

I foster dogs for a rescue. Many of our dogs come to us from shelters or living on the streets. Many have this problem from having to fight for their food or eat it fast before they are shooed off for digging in the garbage, etc. I keep hard-plastic bottles with larger openings (iced tea bottles are great) and serve their meal in that. It’s along the lines of her ‘scatter’ tip, except now it’s a challenge they have to figure out. You can up the challenge, by moving to a bottle with a smaller opening like a water/soda bottle (but be careful as they will chew up those bottles, they are pretty much single use lol) Sometimes, after eating all meals this way for a while, they figure out there’s gonna be another meal and they gradually slow down to a regular bowl. In a world where most pet dogs don’t have jobs anymore, they crave the challenge of figuring stuff out. Try it, it’s entertaining to watch, too!

Thank you for watching! Instead of the plastic bottles we would recommend using a Kong or a Topl. These are reusable and would be difficult for a pup to actually chew up. Hiding food all over the house would increase ant problem lol! I wish it was possible though.

Some puppies are quite excited to eat and may not chew. We recommend talking to your vet about your pup specifically and how to safely address this issue!

Next meal, I'll be putting a hard ball in Ella's dish and see if that helps slow her down. I've used the scatter on the floor technique already and we use part of her food as reward for training sessions. If there were an Olympic timed event for chowing down, she will be the gold metal winner. Not good.

The kibble we use isn't small it's like weird disks and she doesn't chew any the pieces

9 looks like it'll work for my guy, he will only eat if we stand with him next to his bowl so I think that's one of the main reasons he gulps.

We tried everything for our Labrador slow bowls don't work neither do puzzle feeders she's so gassy and bloated my step dad won't feed her anything but kibble and that's why she's overweight and always hungry and won't use puzzle toys well she just breaks them.

You can hand feed her through a training game so you can better control the timing of the food. You can also soak the food and turn it into a mush for her to lick out of a Kong or West Paw Toppl or off a licky mat.

Large dog in outdoor enclosure? Scatter food on ground? Ants! Slow feeder bowl? Chee toy.

@@quanbowie1826 Hi! yes he does! he doesn't eat as fast as he use to but he still eats from a slow feeder bowl just because he enjoys eating his meals there. I tried to put his food in a regular bowl but it seems like he doesn't like to eat out of it as much. so definitely a slow feeder bowl will help. you can also feed him in those puzzle toys or stuff a ball. the puzzle ones can be expensive so you can actually diy it with a muffin tin and put some stuff on it so i can eat slower

So what do you do with raw fed dogs ?

im a little frustrated not at this video but im desperately trying to find way to get my dog to chew her food but all i find is reasons to slow down her eating, thats not the same thing. no matter what i do my dog WILL NOT chew her food, ive tried the slow eating bbowl ive tried bigger kibble ive tried a normal bowl in different sizes and nothing is changing.

Same here. I have wet the food and have a puzzle feeder. It definitely slows her eating, but no matter the size of food or treat, she swallows it whole. I have to cut up her treats now so they don't get caught in her throat.

My dog does not chew her treats and vomits after consuming. I use denti sticks for her teeth. How do I teach her to chew the denti sticks?

I've tried the muffin pan but my dog still eats like he's starving and portioned his food throughout the day with a slow feeder so he eats 4 times a day now but he still eats like he's starving nothing works and we can't through his food on the ground because he already has a problem from eating everything on it idk what to do :/

Most of the time dogs get a bloated stomach if they eat too much or if they eat too close to exercising. If your pup has eaten too much you can sometimes tell because their stomach will appear to be swollen and engorged. Your pup may struggle to get comfortable and even pace around due to discomfort. It’s important to avoid exercising a dog immediately before or after a meal.We recommend a buffer of 30 to 60 minutes before or after meals before allowing the puppy to run and exercise. This includes walks. For more information on safe exercise for your puppy, including how often or how much they should exercise, check out this great video. Try to get their food wet and put in in a kong so they are having to lick the food instead of chew it. You can also mix up their kibble with yogurt or peanut butter.

These are all a variant of the same technique.. I mean it's good info but really need to know how to actually get them to start chewing slower or for some, chewing at all

I just feel like this advice isn't actually helpful, the dog is never learning to actually eat slower, they just aren't getting as much food at one time. Is there a way to actually train them to eat the food they are given at a slower rate?

If your pup is eating too fast you can use various slow bowl feeders, puzzle toys, and enrichment activities such as snuffle mats to slow down the eating process. While these things may slow the consumption rate you will need to work on your pup’s excitement level around food, and impulse control. This will take time and training. It’s not likely that you will change the rate at which they consume food for the long term without the above mentioned tools and techniques. After all, this would be like making you change the entire way you eat your meals and change your thought process about food and it’s value all together. It would be very challenging. In order for this to be most effective you would have needed to start this back when the pup was with the breeder and even then there’s no guarantee that they would be able to change their consumption habits.

None of these help since puppy won't chew the one kibble, well maybe the one to soak in water 😏

Puppies are often not food motivated at first. Try soaking the kibble and turning it into more of a paste, and spreading it on a licky mat. Puppies often like that!
