Dog Breed Video: Irish Setter

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is a video about the dog breed Irish Setter, from the www.naturallyhappydogs.com website.
In this video, we meet the Irish Setter, also known as the 'Red Setter' or the 'Irish Red Setter'.
David and Gillian Bell have had Irish Setters since the mid seventies. Irish Setters were originally bred to work on grouse moors. They worked mainly to scent and flush game rather than retrieve game and do not naturally retrieve like other breeds such as Labradors. They are a great family dog but David feels they are more 'intelligent' than 'trainable' so need mental as well as physical exercise. They can be used as a working dog today but David feels their main appeal is their fun personality.

My brother and i had an Irish setter when we were little. The sweetest dog in the world!! We used to lay our heads on Rocky's belly for naps. Our neighbor who was a Father of a church just loved him and would come and visit him everyday. We had to move out of state and couldn't take him. Father stroesel took him gladly. He would send us letters with Rocky's paw prints and a " message" from Rocky. Rocky did every church service and stood up front with Father. Rocky even wore the white church garb (I'm not sure what it is called). The walked a certain route everyday. One winter day Father was hit by a car and severely injured. The driver took off..Rocky layed on top of him for a long while before they were found. Rocky saved his life!

I accidently got an Irish setter in my teens HE LITERALLY WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SETTER IVE EVER SEEN 💖 I was walking to the horse stables to work, this dog came running down a hill right at me, i ran for my life thinking he was after me lol, long short i relaized he was a sweetie. He followed me a the way to the stables, when I got there I called his owner (he had tags) I said " hi your dog is here w me at the stables he followed me" The man rudely said "KEEP HIM" and hung up😳 i didnt know what to do, the dog follwed me through my day, I snuck him home , worried my dad would get mad and he would have to go.... my dad fell in love w him and we had him all his life, he was such a great dog. I rarely see irish setters now a days, may have to find another , ive never forgotten that boy💝💖💝

When I was in kindergarten we bred our lovely and sweet Irish setter. She had 12 puppies and I remember so well the joy of getting in the "crib" area we had set up and letting the adorable wiggly red pups climb all over me. She was a wonderful member of our family for many years.

Lovely breed that shows compassion and faithfulness everyday. My boy has excelled as a Therapy Dog also and is such a calming soul.

We just lost our 10 year old Irish Setter. I never had dogs growing up, so he and my English Springer Spaniel are my first two. When he passed, I lost a loyal and tender hearted friend who loved my children. He was perfect and it’s the little things he did like each day that makes me miss his sweet face. If you have a young family, I’d highly recommend the Irish Setter. I miss my buddy.

We've had Irish Setters back as far as my grandfather, then my father and now me. I`ve had 2 and still have one today, Casey is now 10 and a very sweet and mellow, big boy. I loved how you explained this very loving and special bread of dog. I get so tired of people saying how beautiful they are, but just so stupid, it's just not true. My Casey's still very quick to learn new commands, even at 10. Nothing makes him happier than pleasing me, he just beams with the pleasure of it. I'm also a huge cat lover and explain when people make those comments, that an Irishes personality are more like cats than your typical dog. Don't mistake their independence and short attention span as them being stupid. Yes, when young and surrounded with lots of stimulus, they can be selective with what commands they choose to listen to. But, as they mature and mellow, they are quick to learn and trive on making you happy. My first Irish, Red, was a field dog and if that rascal was more that 50 feet ahead of me, or saw birds, his ears would shutdown, he would stop listening and would take off. Sadly, it wasn't until years after he'd passed that I'd really understood I'd been fighting against his innate nature, instead of working with it. I trained our second Irish completely different. However, I must admit he's a much mellower dog than my first. Which is why taking the advice of checking out the dogs at the breeder's is key. The older dogs living at Casey's breeder were very chill, super mellow and fit my household much better. But, what was also different was the time we were able to spend with Casey vs Red. I believe had we the time and a second dog (which we had for Casey) it would have been much easier working with Red and keeping his attention at home instead off somewhere else. I really love this breed they are just the sweetest, most loving and loyal dogs out there. Do take what this video says too heart before getting one, they can be challenging, but if your're up for the challenge they are truly the most incredible gift.

Pegge, I don't think they are stupid. It's just that this HUNTING breed has be "altered" by years of non-hunting ownership predominantly because of how attractive they are/were. As such, they have become field-stupid, which is quite true, actually. Just think of that long "Afghan-like" coat in the grouse moors!?!?! Hmm...maybe not. Too bad...they were lovely so years ago. Red setters have given this breed a second chance but again, they need to be placed with some responsibility - other than just $$$$.

We are getting an 8-week old female Irish Setter and I am so excited! My grandparents have had an Irish Setter named Brandy and I was only about 3 or 4 then, so I don't remember that much, but from what I do remember I used to put fake fruit on her head. 😂 I feel her presence a lot like she is watching over me. Not a creepy feeling, but a sense of calmness. I am very excited to get her, and people have been saying ill love her/him because we don't quite know what gender, but we're pretty sure she will be a female. But people are saying ill love her, and I'm sure I will! 😍

I love that Irish setters are (usually) "selective energetic" dogs. They can spend many hours lying, sleeping, be calm and quiet, and exhaust their energy during a walk . In contrary to eg. jack Russell or other breeds which are excited all the time. And it needs to be mentioned that setters are prone to cancer. My two setters suffered from cancers

I met King during a heavy storm. Nearly lost my life while removing a huge Eucalyptus tree over a home. Full bore 1,000 homlite chain hit my forehead and ripped my hard hat. 2 am and pouring. Next emergency was an old California Oak tree fell across a residential street. I met king there he was a little walking red critter walked to my wet boot. The owner was medical doctor on call but the garage was blocked. We left to anther emergency. After work I returned and cleared the garage. I fell in love with little setter. Three weeks later I suffered a horrible accident and was bed ridden for months. I began training king on my knees from my wheel chair. Love between us grew beyond description. I planned suicide but king came just in time and saved my life. I’m 83 and lonely and wish he was here now.

Yes I had a very difficult time when King was kidnapped. He was 8 years old. I posted reward for $500.00. My mother added another $200.00. That was back in 1975. One year on the highway between Bakersfield and LA at a historic site a man offered me $1,000 cash for King. I said, “all your money in the bank couldn’t buy this friend of mine.” He saw it in my eyes and shook my hand. He war obedient and loving and protective. In mountain canyon while getting a fire going he on his own would run up both sides to secure the area for us. My greatest wish is that mankind could be like my doggie it would be a beautiful world. He never got angry. I’m 83 now and wish he could be with me now. We loved the mountains.

Definitely exercise the dog! Take it for a walk/jog when you get home from classes. Irish Setters are very smart and they’re happy to be trained IF you make it fun for them. Treats and positive reinforcement will go a long way. Also, the more time you spend with the dog, the more it will listen to you - setters are not pack leaders and make trouble if no ones setting an example. They’ve got a ton of energy, they’re super sweet and if you mold your schedule a bit to get that energy out, they’ll be happy to adapt to your lifestyle a bit and hang out on the couch. Give them attention, positive correction, pick a noise to correct them instead of just saying “no.” Keep at it while it’s a puppy and by age 3 you’ll have a beautiful, caring, intelligent, unforgettable best friend.
