Does This Robot Really Throw Itself Down Stairs?

Marques and Andrew took some time to go over a few of the pros and all of the cons of the new Amazon Astro robot that got announced. This year has had way more robot talk than usual but still fun to think about.

    Major companies like Amazon, Apple and Samsung will do absolutely anything before making an AI robot on 4 legs. Just the image of that alone would likely tank most sales. In order to make a robot with 4 functioning legs that could successfully maneuver objects and go up and down stairs, it would look terrifyingly similar to arachnids and creepy animals, and nobody would want to walk out to their kitchen at night to see that creature scaling their floors. Although I don't argue that it would be significantly more functional and reasonable for accomplishing tasks.

If you can start a video call to the bot to check in on them or have them able to start a call with voice if they need to know where something is/are confused about something/they've fallen over/just need to talk to somebody. I don't however see much use for the average abled person

    I own an Astro and the comments you are discussing (from some of the developers) are asinine, not because of my support of Astro but because it seems ridiculous that if they developed this robot, that they would be so critical of its operations. I haven’t had any issues with Astor! It is performing as described by Amazon and it hasn’t thrown itself down any stairs. If you are going to review these items, it is highly recommended that you first purchase one and use it for some time before giving such a critical review. You have to start somewhere, if we are going to advance technology and service in our personal lives.

    For people with things like Parkinson's, arthritis and shaky hands who don't have a lot of stability and long-term grip strength I could see this been very useful so they can just put the product down in the cup holder and have it take it into the next room which would make things a lot easier for them but something that would be a lot better is full on table version where they can put their meal on ask the bot to go into the room and then ask it to stay in front of them while they finish eating and give a verbal command telling it when they're done before it can moove again

    I think the point of the cupholders is replacing wait staff ... Also it's not the wheels that limits this so much it's the lack of legs ... I think wheels are better than feet but legs are better than suspension. A wheeled legged robot is the best of all imho .. ala Boston Dynamics 'Handle' robot.

  • @fartcannon-wg5ol

    @fartcannon-wg5ol

    But it won't replace wait staff because it can't get the drink out of the fridge. You can go to the kitchen together, put the drink in and then walk beside him while watching him carry it slowly where you want it. 😂

  • @IraQNid
    @IraQNid Жыл бұрын

    It has the same capabilities as home robots from the 1980s and 1990s. Not a whole lot going for it. Although there was a two wheeler from the 1980s that had a can dispenser attachment for fetching cold drinks on demand. You had to pre-load that dispenser of course. But it at least was along the lines you're talking about. Now move over to industrial robots that have 6-8 legs, can walk into and out of the tail beds of pickups on their own, can operate elevators on their own, have high mounted stereo video cameras in its head, can see 360 degrees by rotating its head and/or body, also features sensors to navigate its environment, and has microphones. Imagine this same robot as a tall cylindrical apparatus that can be fitted with jointed telescopic arms with pincers or other types of grippers. Now you have something that can be of real use. Like monitoring a nuclear accident, operating valves, levers, dials, door knobs, picking up heavy objects, and best of all functioning semi-autonomously. But also have capabilities for full remote control by a human operator over a wireless data link.

    Some people don't want an elaborate system with camera's in every room of the house so I think it does have merit in that sense. If they made a special docking system that was connected to a vending machine like cupboard you could fill with drinks, food and other items, that would definitely increase the cool factor by a lot.

    I don't know which part of the video could be construed as him selling this thing. They were both very critical throughout. He literally said he wouldn't put this in his home.
