The answer to your question is; YES, too many uniforms. Keep dress whites and dress blues. All year round whites, even tropical white shirts, up to local command. For work, nothing wrong with dungarees, maybe improve on the front pockets.

My favorite in my time was the working blue. Also, known as the "Johnny Cash" or the "Gunslinger" especially with the raincoat that looked like a duster including a riding split in the back. But, I love the fact the Navy has retained the "Crackerjack" all these years based on tradition. (except that time in the seventies when everyone was on drugs and they had the "Salt and Pepper." lol)

Alcohol is a drug so everybody’s still on drugs. What are they going to do when marijuana is legalized federally? My sister used to date an ex-lieutenant who went to Annapolis and he told me that everybody at the academy back in the mid ‘70s used to smoke the ganja so it wasn’t just the enlisted men. Then also the biggest pot dealer where I went to college was a Navy ROTC scholarship midshipman destined for the regular navy. Something tells me sailors still smoke weed but less often, maybe immediately after passing in the bottle. After all, in the French Foreign Legion they’re ALLOWED to smoke hashish, or at least they were until recently according to one book I read written by an American legionaire.

The days where you have to change in and out of uniforms for multiple reasons is what gets annoying . This past weekend alone, I had to wear my NWUs, Dress Blues, and Coveralls all in the same day. My closet looked like a hurricane came through it at one point. I also went to the gym later that so I put on my jump suit. Lol! And little things like wearing your 8 point cover instead of your ball cap, and being called out for it.

Enlisted up to E6 should have a working uniform (I'm old school, so dungarees), working blues/whites for shore based commands, then your dress blues/whites. We on subs had our poopy suits for underway. That was it. No reason to have more other than to fleece hard working sailors out of more stuff they won't use to put into their seabags.

I read somewhere that the Navy is wear testing new shipboard uniforms that are two piece (like the Type III) but solid color , blue for E-6 and below and khaki for E-7 and up. They are supposed to be fire retardent. These uniforms, if adopted, will be issued as organizational clothing, and will replace the coverall for underway wear. If the Navy were smart, they would make these new uniforms the authorized working uniform, issue them to everyone and give the Type III back to the units they were originally intended for.

Went though several transitions in my 20 years. Was surprised with my first issue in 1974 with the "Zummie Suit" (double breasted coat with silver buttons and combo cap). Immediately went out and bought a proper set of "Crackerjacks". Wore them until they were phased out 10 months later. "Utilities" went through several design changes until we finally went back to dungarees. What you called "Johnny Cash", we called "Gunfighters" (Black Shirt, Black Pants). Hated the "Salt and Peppers" (Black Pants, White Shirt). Very happy when the "Crackerjacks" returned. Being in submarines, we always wore the "poopy suit" (coveralls) underway with soft shoes. Only wore boots when loading/unloading weapons. Retired long before cammies ever came into play. PT gear?....I was issued a beige colored bathing trunks and used a white t-shirt.

Several of us were going to be advanced to E-4 in a ceremony in the afternoon. We had to wear our blues. One sailor apparently never wore his blues, and he sewed his rating badge on himself. When we were almost ready for the advancement ceremony, he realized his jumper was inside-out when he sewed it on. When he turned it outside-in, he discovered his rating badge was on the right sleeve and upside down. Add to that, he had his pants on backwards.

I still like the blue-ish, grey and white camo. Just use the same fabric and design of the NWU 3s. It maybe inconvenient when we fall in the ocean but that color is badass and people will know immediately that you’re a Navy member. It stood out from the rest of the branches. I mean it would be nice if we could individually choose between the two and/or both if we want.

Yes! When I was in the Navy everything we were issued had to fit in your seabag. And most of it was washable. But, within the Navy, the skippers, or base commanders, could impose local regs. At Quonset Point NAS the local regs included: no blue baseball hats could be worn in the "station ares". You had to leave the barracks wearing your "dixie cup" white hat with your baseball hat in your dungeree pants pocket. Halfway between the barracks and your squadron's hanger area you had to switch hats. Going to lunch at the chow hall you had to reverse the procedure, and there were SPs at the chow hall ready to write you up if you came in with a baseball hat on your head. Yes! the OC was an idiot!.

Marines have a lot of uniforms too, I always figured that if you fell under the department of the Navy you just liked playing dress up, also don't your SNCOs and officers have different dress uniforms? I think the Air Force has it right with the number of uniforms we have 1) ABUs/OCPs ABUs were the standard working uniform but we're not changing to the OCP 2) PT uniform 3)Dress Blues, officers have epaulets sewn on for their rank 4)Mess dress, we have a full mess dress uniform that anyone can wear but only officers are required to have it, enlisted may just substitute the light blue shirt from their blues with a white one and remove their nametag. Pilots get to wear flightsuits on days they have flight related duty but they say all of their duties are flight related so they always wear them, those damn things aren't paid for by them and they are issued to them annually by AFE so they save money on having to replace their ABUs because after all a uniform won't wear out if you don't wear it.

All in all, the Navy probably has less uniforms now than they did a few decades ago. You mentioned the working whites (short sleeves) and the working blues (fondly known as the Johnny Cash) the dress whites/blues (jumpers). Now the Navy has one uniform that takes the place of the white/blue working uniform, but you have official PT gear. I like the look of the NWU III and I think that uniform was a great idea. More comfortable, shows dirt less etc... I remember talking to older guys who had worn the "salt and pepper" uniform. It was a blazer, blue/black pants (like the Johnny Cash), white shirt, with tie and a cover with a black brim like the chiefs/officers wear with the Navy "crow" sitting on the USN. That one went away in favor of the older, more traditional jumper (blue) and then the dress white jumper. The mess dress uniform is optional from what I understand. Hey, if someone wants to spend the money on it, have at it. Just don't allow commands to (cough) "highly encourage" personnel to have to buy it. It seems like every CNO or Army Chief of Staff wants to put their fingerprints on their respective services. Like that Army CoS who had everyone wear the black beret (sorry Rangers). Now the Army is going to the pinks and greens. I think it should be a regulation that no uniform changes can be made for 20 years after the last one, unless the service issues the stuff. The cost alone would cut down on this. The one exception would be if a true, relevant need could be shown.

I was in the USN from 1960-1980. Our utility uniform was Dungarees. Dress Whites, verDress Blues (required when we traveled on official orders if we were in Uniform) a version call service Dress Blues. IN 1970 or so when Zumwalt was CNO he authorized that we could travel to and from home in Dungarees with the restriction that we did not get out of the car, but some sailors did that just too often and we lost the privilege's. When I retired in Dec 1979 we also had a uniform with a chief style coat blue trousers and a chief style hat. I like that uniform because my rate Tradevman was mostly shore duty so did not have a storage problem. I see so many different uniforms for enlisted sailors now and i am confused. you had only whites, blues, or dungerees.when I was in.

for most of my eight years in the active duty army I wore camo except for a very few rare occasions. We wore class A's for a few payday activity days. In my opinion the every day uniform should be camo and a side arm (M9 pistol). The only time you should ever have to wear a dress uniform is going to court, addressing congress, or meeting other dignitaries. Military personnel should always be ready to fight where ever they are. I know this is the army in me saying this but unless you are on a ship their is no reason you should not be trained and proficient with a M9 or M4 regardless of branch.

You should have had both Dress (with piping) and Undress Blues (without piping or ribbons). Undress White used the same blouse as Dress only with out the neckerchief or ribbons. Tropical White shirt would have been used with Dress White pants. So,... Dress Blue, Undress Blue, Dress White, Undress White, Tropical White, and finally Dungarees. That would make 6 different configurations for that period of time.

My tour was with the Army. There was just too many uniform changes. The cost was more than the military clothing allowance that you received. Now that the Army is going WWII style, just for the coat/jacket/blouse cost $185; you can image the cost for the other clothing that you needed to replace. I was only given $390+ for such. I don't know what they're getting now and S-4 was suppose to issue some of the clothing to off set the cost; in my day that didn't happen (73 through 97). Some body is just loving the monetary intake. Here we go. The Space Force uniform is going to be totally different from the WWII uniform. Just wait, it will not be long before someone changes' that dress attire to look like a suited Gemini Space Suite.
