Does Shivering Timbers Deserve the Hype? Pros & Cons (Michigan's Adventure)

Shivering Timbers has been in my head for over 20 years now, and in 2021 I finally got to Michigan's Adventure to ride it. I came away with mixed reactions - here's its pros and cons.

I find it a million times easier to get room on PTC trains than millennium Flyers. Millennium Flyer restraints will always come down hard if you don't hold them up. While PTC lap bars rarely come down super hard during the ride. I also find that holding up PTC lap bars is way more comfortable and easy than holding up Millennium Flyer restraints.

I agree. I found the restraints on Mystic Timbers to come down pretty easily when going up the lift and by the time you're in the shed, you're stapled and it's rather uncomfortable. That's why I always prefer PTC trains over Millennium Flyer trains. PTC trains are my favorite wooden coaster trains especially with buzz bars.

Good to know it isn’t just me. Don’t get me wrong I find the PTC trains themselves to be worse than millennium flyers, in fact I’d say they’re far inferior, but for some reason my PTC lap bar never comes down nearly as hard as people describe. My home park is King’s Island and I hardly get a chance to leave the state, so I’ve ridden all the coasters here, and the amount for each certainly goes in double digits (except maybe invertigo). I can say for a fact it’s much easier for me to get stapled on Mystic Timbers than say, the Racer. Perhaps it’s a matter of body type, or individual rides as opposed to the restraint. Like most things, it’s probably a little bit of both

@@FizzerTheRanter That's what appears to be the general sentiment of GCI's Millenium Flyers. They're FAR better trains, but the lap bars just ruin what are otherwise great trains. Actually, Millenium Flyers can actually be worse on wooden coaster track because they're heavier overall, so I don't know why so many parks pick GCI over The Gravity Group and their Timberliners.

@@coasterhockygamingboy9549 They wouldn't even need a custom coaster imo. Thunderhawk set attendance records for the park when it was relocated. The profit margin (what they make compared to what they spend) is the highest in the chain. The problem is it shares almost all of its market with Cedar Point...and for Cedar Fair to justify spending what they do on CP they need people in Michigan to visit. That's why they market this park as a water/family park. It also gets those in the area who prefer Cedar Point to buy a platinum pass...so it is more of a supplement to CP. Plus this park makes money regardless of there being new major investments so there is no need to expand it in any way from a business stand point.

While I have yet to ride Shivering Timbers, I have been on many a PTC train. I simply can't understand how I'm still alive after riding The Beast, Racer, Blue Streak, and Raging Wolf Bobs all with just buzz bars, no headrests, seat dividers, or set belts. I honestly think the ability to bounce around a bit made the rides feel faster and roughness was welcomed as just another thrill. I guess I should consider myself fortunate to have those memories.

I've ridden as many coasters as you have Chris, but I'm not ranking almost 550 coasters. I rank my Top 50 Steel & Woodies for Coaster-net's Thrilling 32 each year (that's plenty enough! lol) I had ST as my #22 Woodie last December (not bad for the over 110 Woodies I've ridden). I've only been to MA once in 2019, even though I live in Michigan, 20 miles from Toledo, OH. I have a chance to hit 600 credits with only have ridden coasters in the US and Canada, and not hitting the kiddie coasters. I would have to hit Lagoon, CGA, SFDK, Silverwood, EG & Lakeside. I'm 52, so I have a few dozen defunct credits that will let me skip trying to hit tiny parks west of the Mississippi. It's fun when you're running out of parks to go to...right Chris?

I live about 30 minutes from this park so I grew up riding Shivering Timbers. It was much better ten years ago. The roughness has grown exponentially in my experience over the last few years. However, it is still one of my favorite coasters, period. The removal of the trick track was a bummer. Wolverine wildcat in this park is also surprisingly great but you will need a painkiller after riding it haha.

I got a chance to ride Shivering Timber’s earlier this year, and agree with most of the pros and cons. I mostly agree with how hard it is to keep the lap bar up to get more airtime. I usually don’t really have problems with this on other PTCs, but it did definitely take away from the airtime, which was absolutely nuts (buzz bars would be a dream)

This ride is great; I agree with all the pros, though I'm not as high on the helix because I don't hugely love laterals on wooden coasters. I think you're spot-on with the roughness being noticable but bearable, and the rest of your cons seem to be fairly minor, with one exception: The restraints. That's the one point I disagree with. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't actually need to physically lift off my seat to enjoy airtime; the sensation of my torso being pulled into the air is fun with or without my legs straightening. As for Millennium Flyers, while they would surely be more comfortable, they're also lighter, and I think on a long ride like this, the pacing might suffer towards the end.

@@blitzn00dle50 Millenium flyers can definitely handle positives... just look at the G force measurement vids on GCI coasters As for the airtime, staff member of GCI Claire Hain was quoted as stating in IAAPA that Millenium Flyers aren't designed to go below 0 g... GCI's coasters are mostly as lateral based layouts, positives at the bottom of the turns, and quick pops of floater... which is what GCI trains can handle in the airtime department

With PTC lap-bars, I find it’s hard to get room even in the station. The shaping of the bar makes it so it restricts your lap more than your legs, which really sucks compared to B&M clamshells or Premier Rides lap-bars, which give me much more room.

  • @mhtube01

The airtime wouldn't be better, in fact I think it would lessen the airtime. MF lap bars are able to keep lowering and staple riders much easier than PTC's lap bars are. I don't think they'd improve the smoothness either as they're best for more twisty layouts and fast transitions. This ride is absolutely appropriate with PTC trains, there's nothing wrong with them and they're some of the better trains out there.
