Does putting an umbrella over your AC unit really help lower your electric bill?

Worked for me. My test indicates about a hour less run time in 24 hrs according to my Nest thermostat history. This was this past Friday and Saturday with nearly identical weather days The other test I performed was leaving the ac on all-day to maintain 76F or letting it shut down all together during the day while I am at work. The shut off resulted in 4 hrs less run time in a 24 hour period. Cheers.

AC manufacturers say to install the units so they’re in the shade during the hottest part of the day. So are they lying about shade helping the AC or the people saying the umbrella doesn’t work?

I believe this is a poor excuse for a science experiment. You should be testing the Delta T, to see if that is changed by having a shaded area and how much change it has. For instance, adding an umbrella may increase the cooling per cycle meaning you can cool faster and wouldn’t have to run as often. I think the shade would take some load off of the compressor so it’s not running under so much heat, this would extend the life of the unit I would think. I’m sure your AC technicians would love that right? No, they wouldn’t. Also, an umbrella is not going to reduce the amount of heat the unit can blow off, I mean come on that’s a HUGE REACH.

If you are in direct sunlight all day, what do you do to cool off? Find shade right? So I do cover mine since it’s in direct sunlight but allow airflow. From experience, if your outdoor unit gets too hot, your capacitor will fail. Do yourself a favor and get a few extra capacitors in case they go out. They are about $20 and very easy to replace. Do that before this guy shows up ready to charge you hundreds for a capacitor.

Wish the technician showed us the before and after numbers instead of us taking his word for it lol So the reason putting something over the unit is a bad idea is because the fan is trying to expel hot air upwards while trying to take in cool air from the sides but an obstruction would force the hot air back down making the unit take in hot air. I still contend that having the unit in a shaded area (like the shady side of a building) is beneficial if for nothing else, it helps cool the capacitor, the one part that breaks the most frequently. Capacitors fail most often due to fluctuating voltages and overheating so at the least, I'd like to keep that cool. It's no coincidence that people often remark that it's just their luck that their AC had to blow on the hottest day of the month and it's usually the capacitor.

Here's something that actually works: paint your house white. The brightest white you can find. No idea why other colors are even allowed in states with hot climates like AZ and FL. Also planting a tree helps.

Draw the shades on all the windows on the sunny side of the house especially when you're not even home.

No its doesn't, The heat has to escape out of the condenser motor that's what's taking the heat outta your home, anything that obstructs it makes it work harder. I've only been in the trade for 36 years

If you watched the video thoroughly you’d see the umbrella is more than 24in away from the unit and is not blocking the fans expelled air flow. Heat escapes the condenser coil and is pulled by the condenser fan motor. A cooler motor results in longer life span and less kW usage as heat makes motors less efficient. The same can be said for the 100lb compressor. Less heat load on the condenser allows it to better expel heat as the large heat load of the sun is no longer fighting it as it does its job, TO COOL YOUR HOUSE. If you could shade your house wouldn’t you do that? Why wouldn’t you do the same for the condenser? I’ve only been doing this for 4yrs and I know this. Less experience and more knowledge in this area…. Don’t spread bad trade knowledge, or any knowledge for that matter; unless you know for sure you’re correct.

Now the unit needs more refrigerant because he blew it out connecting his 6ft hoses with no low loss fittings.

Somebody tell the tech the outside unit in called a condenser. The boiling happens in the evaporator.

I would add to set your thermostat up as high as you can reasonably live with will substantially lower your electric bill, at a minimum to 78 degrees but 82 degrees is better if you can tolerate it.

Sounds dumb as hell then way when it's night time the ac cool better. Oh ya it's not in direct sunlight anymore. What you have to do is have the umbrella up before the sun comes up to really test. You sit The umbrella to the side and block the sun not over the unit. tests for all day not just 20 minutes out the day when the unit is already hot. Remember when the AC man shows up to your house he will tell you you need a whole new unit when you probably only need a $20 part. So i definitely don't trust them here what they tell you.
