Does Planting by the Signs Really Work? - FHC Q & A

Perhaps you’ve just come across the idea of planting by the signs and were wondering what it’s all about. Well, it’s a fairly controversial topic because there are many farmers and gardeners who are FIRM believers in planting by the signs-and many successful farmers who are NOT. So does it really work by improving your garden production? In this edition of the Farm Hand’s Companion Q & A show, Pa Mac takes on this provocative topic and explains his view on the matter.
For further information on the topic of farming or gardening by the moon phases, see Pa Mac’s articles on the subject:

My old neighbor had a great garden. Occasionally he'd come over to raid the manure pile for his garen. I asked him once if he planted by the moon and he said "The moon doesn't help my garden like sweat and horse S#!t does so I don't worry about it."

Love how the Bible is full of agricultural images and references. Like so many today, I learned precious little growing up of how to garden, for example, but when I started doing it, I began to understand so much more what the Bible means by what it says .

The star signs are like the hour hand on a clock and the moon the minute hand,,, they work together. Another apology, the signs are our monthly calendar. Anything that keep you on a cycle works. DON'T go out in the garden on May day and "put out the garden" all in one day, stagger your planting, stagger the harvest.

I've never planted by any signs. I usually plant when I have the time to do it, and have for the most part had a good garden. The only time I've had a bad garden is when I planted too early, or too late. Usually too late.

You are so fun. I love how you tiptoe through this topic. I had heard about moon phases but not signs. I quasi set by the moon. Here’s the thing, setting by the signs may be complicated given where you leave. It really doesn’t matter what signs is going on, if you are at 8000’ in the Rockies, and you try to plant when the stars say so, you might find that you don’t have a garden. Humans form patterns where things are observed to happen regularly so there is a kernel of truth in all mythology.

Last year I thought I'd try out the moon phases gardening and ... six weeks of drought (no germination) that I would have avoided had I used 'the regular methods'. This year I'm planning on multiple plantings to avoid 'betting the farm' on a single technique.

I plant, or whatever, when I have the time to do so. I am a biologist and if I tend to base gardening decisions on peer reviewed science when available. Right now, the best thing I can do for my garden is to add organic material and improve soil biology by adding biochar to my to my red clay soil.

Hey Gary!! I found the topic of your video today quite interesting! And in fact just this morning daddy called me and said " the hickory is puttin' out so I think it's safe to plant the tomatoes" meaning the danger of frost is probably over. We don't plant by the signs but daddy does go by stuff like I just mentioned. As a loose guide. Have a good day Gary and I guess daddy and I will be planting all those tomatoes I've started in my greenhouse now! I have extra by the way! 😊

On a topic that could easily lead on to rabbit trails, you've done a very good job of avoiding the cobwebs. My wife and I plant on the full moon as did my Grandmother, and BTW, we raise goats and do preventative de-worming on a full moon. When we mentioned this in passing to our veterinarian, she agreed that it is a good practice to do so on a full moon. Mankind does not have all the answers.

My grandad believed and followed the signs religiously. He almost always had a good garden and produced a lot. My Great Uncle his brother always said "I plant my seeds in the ground not in the signs" and he almost always had a good garden and produced a lot. I plant when I have time to plant and thats that. So... I have no idea what works!

I do wonder if the question wasnt more asking about planting based on natures signs. For example planting carrots when the daffodils bloom. One comment on trimming hair by burning. It's actually done that way some places, especially and Ive done it without any pain, especially areas I needed to tape due to injury but didnt want to yank hair with the tape. Kinda brush the flame actoss the hair with the flame ABOVE the skin. It is enough to singe the hair but doesnt burn your skin at all. Burning hair DOES stink to high heaven though.

I dont plant by the moon and stars because I don't know how very well, and don't understsnd well enough. I do plant when there is a full moon hitting wet dirt, or rain expected. However, I study this because we know that stars are different colors and reflect different kinds of radiation. We know the sun radiation helps plants. It makes sense that other kinds of radiation might affect parts of the plant differently. I heard one great explanation of how radiation from Jupiter affects plants. Correct me if I am wrong. I understood that Jupiter at a certain time in winter, sends energy to the earth that makes roots grow best in winter. The idea is, the energy hits earth at an angle that drives it deep into the rocks, where it releases charged particles from rocks into the soil so that the plant roots can pick up those particles. I think the particles are like electricity in having plus and minus charges. That really makes sense to me and is not weird. It also makes sense out of what my mother did ... She put rocks into her garden. They were geodes (quartz crystals). Her parents were Germans, and they said that dirt or creeks full of geodes made the best dirt in the world. My grandpa traveled all over the U.S. but settled on a farm because it had skull rocks rolling all over it! When he plowed with his mule, he left these round rocks in the corn! To this day, I set these beautiful rocks in amongst my flowers. And it just struck me-- that flower bed is the best flower bed i have. Only God understands it fully, but Tesla loved quartz because it amplifies a weak current.

Oh wow Pa Mac, I’m so deep into metaphysics I tend to drizzle it anywhere I go lol! But don’t be mad, we can still be friends🤗 My Grandmother always planted by the signs and the moon, and her garden was huge and plentiful. I’ve known many who didn’t and there’s were also huge and plentiful. Knowledge is crucial in gardening but a little extra help doesn’t hurt a thing. In my mind there is nothing wrong with astrology and planting by the stars. I know many here disagree and that’s fine. We can still be friends.❤️🤗🐝

If there are people who have a problem with it, let them try planting during the off times as an experiment for themselves. If they see there’s a difference in yield, they are welcome to come with with their own explanations as to why one time yields this as opposed to that. And hopefully they won’t be upset when others try and trash their theories.

This is a vastly different form of "planting by the sighs" then my grandfather taught me He taught things like start plowing when you have snow on thawed out ground, Plant corn when the maple seed fall. Plant garlic the first time you see snow flack that don't stick. sign that nature gives not sign the heavens give

Farmers are much like baseball players (and humans in general). We find patterns everywhere, even when there aren't any. I doubt very much that planting based on astrology has any effect on farming, any more than it does on the personalities of humans born when the planet happens to be at any given position in its orbit around the Sun.

There is a difference between learning how things work and turning that into a religion. My grandparents planted by the signs and seasons. They also castrated and butchered by the signs. Why? Their ancestors observed and reported what worked and what didn't. One can study Rudolf Steiner's methods, read the "Farmer's Almanac," and experiment with "The North American Maria Thun Biodynamic Almanac" without becoming a believer in the religion of Astrology. Jesus Christ is my Lord and master, but I also study metaphysical things as well. God gave us Astronomy; Astrology comes from somewhere else.
