Does Passion Matter in Programming?

Ойын-сауық

Welcome back everyone. Right out of the gate I feel like this topic caught a lot of people off guard. In this video we are going to take a deep dive on what I believe to be a major misunderstanding among the programming industry. It's this idea that Passion in programming is THE ONLY reason people should become developers. At Devslopes we always put a major emphasis on learning web development and the benefits of learning Web Development. What a lot of people don't understand is the reason for that. That programming isn't just for people with passion! Lets dive in! - Devslopes

I'm a bus driver and I do programming as a hobby. The reason I got into programming is because I just wanted to make games similar to those Nintendo and Sega games that I played as a kid.

I totally agree. Most entry level web development jobs offer at least 40k a year, and getting into them is not as hard as other jobs. And this can raise passion and grow the industry. But the successful programmers are those who are truly passionate about what they do, even if the lifestyle is decent enough. Because reaching that lifestyle once the job is given can cause many to opt out because they reached their goal. But that shouldn't be the case once you really deep down into coding. It takes time to learn, and will always be learning to improve skills. Web development allows greater creativity, more ideas, whether the person is skilled or unskilled. Then they can draw a wireframe like they were in kindergarten, then have a passion for developing the application. Designing is fun fam 👍🏾

I love this. Very important video. I'm pursuing web development because my passion is fiction writing. Not everyone's passion makes for a practical career path. If I ever make a full-time living from my books, it'll probably be a long time coming. In the meantime, I want a flexible job that gives me the time and energy to write.

I started just for curiosity but now I'm passionate about coding, I think if you're a person who's looking for a better life, you could try this for a season and it is not necessary to have a passion for code from the beginning, you can have that passion through of that season.

I mean, it helps. yeah, people can undoubtedly be good at programming for the money less the love of it and do well in the field, but put it like this, the passion, the goal-oriented idea of wanting to do something as a programmer, (for me, yeah, it was game design, went to college doing game dev, ended up as a java/angular developer as a first job...) There's nothing wrong with doing web development/web service software engineering, but I'd always put it, "what exactly do you want to DO in software? What do you want to MAKE?" like, I've had years where I absolutely hated my job in the field, spending hours having to keep track of my coworkers across the sea doing web service engineering (java/kafka/springboot) or front end development (js/angular 2+) like, even as a developer, as nice it is to live and work remote as it is in a job - you still deal with people - you still have to meet criteria of what is asked of you - you still have to keep learning and working on your own skills OUTSIDE OF WORK - you still have to maintain your position it's not sunshine and rainbows that, you do a thing, like you get a task in a scrum where you're asked to do a version upgrade on a UI library in react, find out that the team who made that ui library messed up a change, and then you done near almost throw your laptop out a window. Like, I think the reason people even mention passion, and this is unrelated to game development, I do it as a hobby with 0 things posted about what I do on social media or anything outside of stuff I did in college or just hobby projects I did with friends, if you don't find a reason to want to try to figure out a codebase or work on some code (which, I'm thankful that when I was in college, some of the projects I had to do were working directly in a codebase and making a feature in said codebase, back in like 2014, this stuff did help when I started working and the first tasks I was given was debugging and looking through existing code bases to squash bugs) Like, you may as well easily get stuck on a problem for days on end where you hole yourself in wondering if you made the right career choice, where your manager'll chew you out where you get burned out, where you get your feelings hurt, and where you lose your confidence in yourself. Passion's important for the field because, for all its worth, and for all the blessings that someone gets as a software engineer, any company wouldn't want you just coding. They need you speaking, giving ideas, and giving estimates. They need you to make those estimates and to be able to find ways to better improve your efficiency and delivery while also looking for avenues to improve the product. Just simply telling someone "hey, do this to get out of your situation" doesn't highlight how much more there is in tech, in the field, developing software that they don't tell you. You don't just, show up to meetings whenever you want, sending PR's and code whenever you want, you have deadlines. Your boss could as well put you on a PIP or put you on a low-achieving list simply because you choose to work remote. You might have trouble communicating with your team because you think the best time for you to work is during hours your coworkers are not available during. And all that stuff that game development can't be remote (hello, we have game jams, hundreds of indie games developed by people in their pajamas, I can open up gamemaker or unity and just, code up a game), of course it can. Just the thinking's different. Whether you make your own engine or use an existing one, the way you think of code has to be different. But it fundamentally is the same as web development stacks. Just the approach to art vs solving problems to peoples' lives and what that application, game or not game, is used for is different. Like, I think what you said forgets that, its one thing to get the job. It's a whole other ballgame to keep it (and see if you even like it in the first place)

This passion mindset is spreading like a pandemic, and the antidote is "So good they can't ignore you" by Cal Newport.

Super true, I kind of have both, passion + money for web dev, Alternatively I hate other fields and wouldn't switch, such as I endorse my 6 and 3-year-old nieces to learn web dev, they just asked a doctor [failing in this means jail and requires a crazy amount of money for practice], I said Nooo! that's super tough, web dev is such an effortless and yet challenging path as you said [all you need is a PC with an internet connection and you're good to go], Thanks, bro

True but if in the case where the job market is low like now and they start firing people off, the ones that are going to get laid off are the ones that just do it for the money. Then at that point don't complain, I guess my point here is that while is true you can just do it for the money and to have a nice style, then when the tough times come around you will be laid off.

Is the field of application development good from a functional and financial standpoint?

What about native mobile like Android & iOS? I remember you guys used to teach it and even had another gentleman promoting it but for whatever reason you dropped it. Web dev is good but not the only option and it's very saturated at this point. There's also other ways to break into tech like QA or UI/UX.

Great & down to earth video. I'm a Java developer & I've been doing this for roughly 5 years & unfortunately my passion for developing died out about 2 years in. I'm trying to reignite my developer passion in 2024 & beyond, I may take up another language or learn web development. My career path was starting as an java developer apprentice after dropping out of university for electronic engineering & am now doing a degree funded by my employer though I have very little passion to study for it. I'm from the UK & UK based (Not London UK but elsewhere). Any tips would be appreciated
