Does Minecraft's Cake Recipe work IRL?
Ғылым және технология
Minecraft is a game set in a world that’s pretty similar to earth, and because of this it’s always walked a fine line between realism and abstraction, turning real-world concepts into functional gameplay mechanics. But what about crafting? The numerous crafting recipes in the game are certainly based in reality, but they all have elements of abstraction. We mostly assume these recipes just wouldn’t work in reality, but could they? The only way to know for sure is to try them out, and I decided to start with the cake recipe!
I'm also thinking of testing Redstone IRL (conductive dust circuitry?) and some other crafting recipes, so if you like this one a lot, PLEASE let me know in the comments that you want more vids like it! Otherwise it could be a while before I make another minecraft-related video.

First "cake", if you'd actually baked it, would probably have turned into something similar to a rice pudding; I've made oat puddings like that, but I steamed them. Second cake was pretty much how cakes were before the middle of the 19th century, when baking powder was invented. Before that, they would beat the batter for an hour at least, to incorporate air and make the cake lighter. Back in those days there was the pound cake, and then there were also yeast-raised cakes, that were probably more like bread. I do have a copy of a 1796 cookbook, and I've made some of the recipes, like pumpkin pie and some of the pancakes, but I have yet to try one of the yeast cakes. I'd like to see more like this, maybe try making Minecraft cookies.

Sodium bicarbonate (AKA baking soda) was discovered in late 1700s, soon after becoming part of baked goods. Combination of it and any acid (vinegar, lemon juice, and so on) gives same effect as modern baking powder. I am surprised that the old-timey cook book does not mention something along those lines, though it is very possible that baking soda was still a hard-to-get luxury thing at that time.

The fact people are mad that you're expressing interest in a subject 🙄
So, it’s actually totally possible to make a cake with only Minecraft ingredients. That is, with no baking powder or butter. You do have to use flour instead of wheat, though, and the proportions are not equal. I wrote this recipe based off a recipe for soufflé pancakes, as they are leavened with egg, so there is no need for baking powder. For the cake: - 1/3 cup flour - 11 teaspoons milk - 1 large egg, separated into yolk and white - 4 teaspoons granulated sugar For the icing: - 10 teaspoons powdered sugar - 1 or 2 teaspoons milk Directions: For the cake; 1. Stir flour, milk, and egg yolk together until smooth. 2. Whip egg whites until they begin to thicken. Then, stream sugar in while whipping. Beat until they form stiff peaks. 3. Add one quarter of the egg white mixture into the batter and stir. Then add one half of the remaining egg white mixture, gently folding them in until combined. Do not deflate. Add remaining egg whites and fold them in gently. 4. Cook (I’ve done them as pancakes, they’re great - cooking them in a small saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat also works, if you want to make the cake one solid object). For the icing: 1. Combine ingredients, adding milk to sugar a little at a time until desired texture is reached. 2. Top cake with icing and serve! This method uses only Minecraft ingredients, although there’s a lot of preparation that goes into it. With this recipe (that was based on the fact that there was only one egg), you can determine that one milk bucket is about 4 teaspoons, one wheat bundle is about 1/9 cup, one sugar pile is about 7 1/2 teaspoons, and one egg is, well, one egg. If you try this out, let me know how it goes! Enjoy!
