I’m a person living with schizoaffective disorder. I was diagnosed almost 35 years ago….my parents never thought I’d make it to 30, but here I am at 51 because of consistent treatment, med compliance, and compliance with hospitalization when necessary. Not trying to discredit your experience, but a month long psychotic breakm with suicidal ideation would hopefully end up with you in the hospital for serious psychiatric treatment. Many people who do not live with a psychotic disorder (schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder) don’t really know how to differentiate a prolonged psychoactive episode from a psychotic break. Even some doctors don’t. Wishing you all the best! Stay healthy my friend! ☺️

And here I am, unable to smoke any amount of weed without a chorus of ultra creepy voices repeating my train of thought to me and interrupting my though patterns. It's terrifying and I wish I could go back to just smoking weed like normal but I can't.

I am a person living with schizoaffective disorder. A friend convinced me to smoke pot, and in small amounts it did not affect me in ways other than a giddy laughter, but I smoked a very strong strain with that friend, and as I sat alone waiting for him, I started to have a seizure. I do not believe that any drug CAUSES schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, though they can definitely cause psychotic breaks in people who have no prior psychiatric illness.

UPDATED: what I actually meant was that other drugs, far more than Marijuana, can cause psychotic breaks…especially for someone who uses while stopping their meds. The example I’ve seen most is with those who stop psychiatric meds and use drugs like meth. Stopping prescribed psych meds is enough in and of itself. I guess I was talking about my seizure because I have had multiple rounds of treatment with ECT that induces a seizure to helped me immensely in certain stages of my illness (depressive type of schizoaffective disorder.) Several times it literally saved my life because it works well and fast! (Especially considering that insurance is such a DICK about limiting psych hospital stays even against medical advice) ANYWAY MY MAIN POINT is that for every seizure you have in your life (induced or due to epilepsy) makes you more likely to have another seizure. It scared the hell out of me and forced Emergency Responders had to come quite a ways onto the beach that me and my SO were on. Sorry for confusion. I just believe that people with psychiatric disorders that involve psychotic breaks need to be careful…especially with the very heavy/concentrated strains today

It is a very broad topic, and each person is a different universe, including the symptoms. I have known cannabis since 1967, I am now almost 73 years old, and I work with drug addiction. Ingested cannabis is totally different from other methods, since it is metabolized in the liver. Whatever the method, if there is no good education and adequate therapy for each person, but unfortunately today's therapies are based on Pharmacological Science. I can assure you that if you have an experienced therapist friend who does not see you as a patient in this matter, the results can be exceptional, but in the long term.

As a schizophrenic, the signs were always there when I was growing up, not to mention my brother programed me to forget things which I feel is a major contributor. This is a list of what all it does for me: helps me function, it helps me eat, helps with the PTSD of what a man did to me, makes my days feel normal again, helps me with coming back down to reality after insane dreams, helps me get rid of the urge to cut, and lastly it helps keep me grounded. I can tell the difference through years of experimenting with smoking and not smoking with my condition and it has only helped me. It also helps block out the visions, because of the visions make my days feel like eons. It really upsets me that I can't legally get ahold of something that helps me simplify my life and allows me to get a better quality of time.

My son as well has schizophrenia started when he was 17 he is now 28. None of the medications have ever made his voices go away, they have changed his medications so many times with no relief. He stopped smoking cannabis about two years ago and he was suffering so much. His father and I decided cannabis might help him have a little break from his voices since the medication is not doing much of anything. He started smoking on almost a month ago, and he seems happier more clear headed and isn’t so aggressive and agitated. He is a whole different person, as I am typing right now he is getting an MRI of his brain. If cannabis helps him right now I am all for it. To see him suffer for so many years has been so painful, and I can’t even imagine what he is going through. Anyone who has schizophrenia are the most strongest people to endure all that suffering. I hope one day they finally have real treatment for everyone of you.

There is a high association between cannabis and the onset of schizophrenia. A person with a risk of psychosis (not yet schizophrenia) risk factors include genetics and abuse, who use weed are at risk for first psychosis which can lead to schizophrenia (it might not be immediate , it might even take 2-3 years before the damage starts. At risk mostly the age group 15-24 years old ) . In short don’t do drugs. Source : rotation in psychiatry.

Might not be the best choice if you're struggling with mental illness and paranoia and need structure. It's ok to avoid it if it's not working for you. And for many it doesn't. If you get pressured, and that actually does happen quite a bit when you're younger, just say it makes you too anxious and drop it. The first one was in 2013, after smoking i had a really bad panic attack and then the panic attacks wouldn't stop after that experience. I kept on having them again and again without smoking anything. It was terrifying. I thought i was losing my mind. The second experience was in 2017 but this one was different, it wasn't just a panic attack it was something much worse, like a paranoid delusion of some sort. I was completely freaking out, thinking my best friend and his dad were evil clones of themselves and that i was trapped in this schizophrenic reality. I was 100% convinced in my mind that i had entered a different reality filled with evil clones of people. The result of these experiences is that i had to go on meds and i have been on the meds ever since, if i try to come off the panic attacks/paranoia comes back. I'm kinda worried now. I was just diagnosed with Schizoeffective disorder last week, but I honestly don't believe I have it. I don't have hallucinations unless it's rare occasions of sleep paralysis or auditary if I'm half asleep. There were a few times I had a high fever and hallucinated. I did, however have some weird experiences with Marijuana starting when I was 19. I was a total stoner back then. One time, after about a year of smoking (not every single day) I heard a woman threaten to stab someone and saw a helicopter light beam onto a building. My friends laughed at me because they said they didn't see nor hear anything when I reacted. Another time I was walking home after smoking with a friend and thought I was seeing police officers all over the place with flashlights. They ended up just being normal people outside walking. Then I went home and had my first horrible episode of anxiety and feeling like I was gonna die. I also felt the floor moving at one point. I called my friend and she said she felt normal and that it wasn't laced with anything. I ended up drawing the line there and only smoked occasionally after fully recovering from the anxiety that episode caused. Now I'm wondering 🤔 Maybe the Marijuana brought an underlying condition to the surface.

Any psychoactive drug can cause psychotic break in the wrong mind, but psychotic break ≠ schizophrenia, although they can be similar. However it completely depends on the individual. You don't have to be a "heavy user" of marijuana to develop schizophrenia. I used to smoke 3 light joints made up of mostly tobacco 3 times a day for 7 days and than id have a 7 day break and I did so for years. The reason Id smoke it one week on, one week off was because I didnt want to develop a habbit. About 2 years ago I developed severe paranoid schizophrenia due to trauma, desperate to get some relief I decided to quit smoking cannibis all together for a while and my symptoms were greatly relieved and than I experimented by smoking a joint and it did exasperate my symptoms for the day. In the peak time of my schizophrenia I went a long time without using marijuana and am certain this was not the cause. Im not comfortable wuth sharing the details of the trauma I endured. I advise if you have schizophrenia or paranoia or both to steer clear of marijuana. It sucks because I believe there are health benefits from this HERB.

Weed can absolutely cause Schizophrenia. I know a guy, who was as Healthy as can be, no Family History of Mental Disorders, was always fit, no genetic defects or health issues. Well into his 30s he started Smoking Weed pretty regularly, he had Smoked in the past with no issues, however with regular use he had two Psychotic Schizophrenic episodes. Hallucinations, Hearing Voices, all the big indicators of Schizophrenia. He stopped Smoking Weed & within a few Months the Voices stopped, he recovered fully and never touched Weed again. I don't buy the argument "It doesn't cause it, it just accelerates your already compromised Genetics" one bit. I think Pot Smokers like to blow off some of the dangers, and blame it on other things than the Weed that makes them feel so good.

@@Peterdropveter What people miss when they have this conversation about Weed causing some of these Mental Disorders such as Schizophrenia (there are others induced by Weed) is the amount of usage of the Marijuana. None of these studies that have ever been done to my knowledge ever recorded the Frequency of use & the Amount of usage. I would be willing to bet that the higher the use, the more frequent the use the more frequently you see major Mental Disorders. It's simply that most people who use Cannabis can't afford large amounts or to sit around all day everyday smoking Pot. The Heavier & more Frequent of use the higher chances of a Mental Episode occurring & this really hasn't been studied. Thus far it's just been what percentage of users develop issues. The Genetics argument hasn't been proven, and it always feels like whenever that is cited as an excuse it's kinda like saying "Well they were gonna go crazy anyway" when in reality we don't even know how Schizophrenia is actually caused, so how do we know what Genes are to blame? It's a guess. Marijuana can be dangerous to use, people need to accept that, it's not the perfectly safe drug everyone thinks it is.

But when they looked at me with their sweet eyes full of love, when I felt that in their presence my heart, too, became as innocent and just as theirs, the feeling of the fullness of life took my breath away, and I worshipped them in silence. The makers of this video have a bias against cannabis. They scapegoat on cannabis saying that this particular plant could cause psychosis or schizophrenia. If only. You'd think an institution of learning would have more objectivity, especially given the information that substance abuse (not abuse of cannabis) can be a contributing factor toward psychosis.

You're lucky 🥲 I wish J had your tolerance. I was going on 7 years (Everyday multiple times for the last 3 years) but had a psychotic break down and had to quit. I'm not sure if I'll ever smoke again. But I know my mind isn't the same as it was before I started heavily smoking. It was amazing for the first 4 years. Then I started getting slower and slower. I'd forget things easily (Still do), and I' have trouble communicating. Unfortunately I think I'd developed social paranoia. I could not talk to people. I would panic and it got so bad that I had to lock myself away a party because I'd smoked so much I became extremely paranoid. I ended up stopping a cold turkey a month later. Honestly, I miss it so much. It made me feel so happy and all my stress and anxieties went away. But I also became more and more stupid. My brain could not hold information for long. I wish I could smoke like the old days, but unfortunately I wasn't gifted with a tolerance not to mention my brother has Scizophrenia. I wish I could find something that all my anxiety and depression away like weed did. I guess I'm kust lucly it wasn't any worse.

Ong. I feel like my mental health has just been getting worse since I smoked weed for the first time, but I don’t think it was the weed. I think it was more the fact I was highly addicted to Benadryl before I smoked weed, and after I smoked weed i began to overdose on it. I’m not sure if it was the grass that made me decide to start abuse deliriants, but ever since I popped that first 400mg of dph my personality has changed. I later overdosed on anti depressants and I think that the experience has permanently changed me. I have constant muscle spasms and frequent seizures. I feel as if my past childhood fears are back and I just don’t feel normal. The thing is, ever since I was 14 I never smoked weed again. I’ve barely smoked weed compared to other people, but i do take absurd amounts of dxm and dph daily.

I tried to get nervous on cbd but it's not possible. The same way I try to stay calm on thc but I can't lol I feel like they're opposites. Maybe yours had some thc in it?? The problem is that small mental health problems are identified by the patient experiencing them and therefore there’s no way to tell if it’s working, what would otherwise be labeled “schizophrenia” will actually be false. Waking up from a nightmare and theb stepping on Lego will negatively impact your day but it’s not going to ruin it unless you believe in superstition. There’s usually a natural explanation to problems that seem to surmount beyond nature, especially problems about thinking. So the medication prescribed must gracefully consider this aspect and instead consider more cognitive/ practical methods of medicine such as CBDs and talk therapy. Lol I was gonna write CBT’s but CBDs are actually being researched for its help with brain function. #thebigbongtheory

So, it's valid to assume that many people who smoke marijuana are schizophrenic or have other mental issues. Still not safe to be around. And, definitely, not safe for them to be driving like they do in great numbers in some cities e.g. Omaha, NE. And, in apartment communities neighbors of such people shouldn't be forced to endure that disgusting smell day in and day out and even have their personal belongings like their clothing saturated with that smell. All of which I have experienced. If you have experienced issues like this as a tenant then please contact your state Congress representative and Senator to push for housing legislation in which marijuana smokers have to be separated from non-smokers.

Very interesting video and with a lot of information, about the processes of this mental illness from the pharmaco-scientific point of view. First of all: Cannabis is for everyone, but everyone is not for cannabis. That means, if there is no adequate education in general, the results will be adverse. My work consists of drug addiction treatment, in the jungle of Peru. For me, there are three therapeutic models: 1.- Pharmaco-therapy. 2.- Therapy without drugs. 3.-Therapy with Medical cannabis, in long term. The most important thing is trust between friend or participant, never patient. The best form with good results of medical cannabis is in oral form, since it is metabolized in the liver. You have to remember that cannabis can be your best friend and your worst enemy if you don't know its benefits and side effects. Best of luck..
