I was pretty good back in the day. Specially with freestyle. Nothing like these guys. I won state a couple times and qualified for nationals several times. I didn’t come from a family where trips to Vegas were possible. Eventually got folded into the workforce and wrestling was over. My sons 5 and I’m going to take him where he wants to go. Anyways I didn’t need anything fancy wrestling was good enough for me However if I had a chance to go to nationals or maybe Japan when the team went or special camps with legendarycoaches and wrestlers attending. who knows maybe I would have went to college. If your kids in love with something I feel like as a parent you should at least try.

Quality, interested, coaches. Quality training partners. I think Askren is right there. I already have plans to move to Wisconsin if my son wants to take wrestling seriously.

Remember watching Cayden’s video about Bo Basset, man had an entire training center under his house ☠️☠️

Ben being baffled by this while also running a private wrestling academy is absolutely hilarious. I’m sure he doesn’t run his academy pro bono, nor should he. But parents being able to pay for camps, trips to tournaments, academies and strength and conditioning coaches is obviously a huge advantage

This really all depends on where you live. If you live in Edinburg PA, you probably have to spend a lot less than if you live in West TX, for example. As far as yearly wrestling expenses are concerned, I spend easily 10-15k/year on my son for class, camps, hotels, meals, gas, etc. COVID year was closer to 20-25k with all the travel needed to get decent matches. It is definitely true though... compared to other sports, wrestling is much cheaper.

If you're living minimum wage and you want your son to be good in wrestling you're going to have to sell everything half the time you're going to be struggling on feeding your family. But I guess that's the sacrifice for us parents because when you break down the cost for the tournaments , the gas, hotels, wrestling shoes cost over $100 I just don't see how your kid could ever be good if you're not spending over $5,000 a year or more

This is an interesting topic . Coming from NY we had great facilities near by but you had to pay to play sometimes . One of the biggest boost in my wrestling career was when I went out to Minnesota for 30 days to train ... $5000 dollars later and i became an incredibly better wrestler overall . Did my parents NEED to do that in order for me to be great , No . I could've easily done that myself through others but it takes money . Look at Brian Realbuto , man literally the askrens living with him and he almost became a 2x ncaa champion , unfortunately injuries ruined that but idk . It's a five or take with that topic . Yes you can be the best without spending 30k but it takes a lot more dedication , will power and motivation to do this without camps , tournaments and clubs revolving around your career

30k a year? Just pay for college, it would be a lot cheaper that way. Teach your kids responsibility through well planned budgeting and fiscal responsibility. Wrestling is awesome but lets be clear, for 15k-30k a year its a bad investment. Very few wrestlers make a substantial living where a proper return on investment is ever going to be seen. I know people will blast me and say I don't understand or some other trivial response. All I can respond is to get your priorities straight and your life together, raise children to be responsible adults by example first and then great wrestlers if you/they choose the path. I love wrestling and my kid loves wrestling but 30k a year for wrestling will never come from me because that would be instilling wrong principles that would only lessen the chance of his long term success. People from the poorest countries with much less opportunities win world championships consistently.

Great point . I guess it really depends how it shapes your son / daughter in the way it can . Such as opportunities at D1 universities and connects through that .
