CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) asks Bob (Bill Murray) for advice on life and marriage and he is brutally honest.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After making a striking directorial debut with her screen adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola offers a story of love and friendship blooming under unlikely circumstances in this comedy drama. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a well-known American actor whose career has gone into a tailspin; needing work, he takes a very large fee to appear in a commercial for Japanese whiskey to be shot in Tokyo. Feeling no small degree of culture shock in Japan, Bob spends most of his non-working hours at his hotel, where he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the bar. Twentysomething Charlotte is married to John (Giovanni Ribisi), a successful photographer who is in Tokyo on an assignment, leaving her to while away her time while he works. Beyond their shared bemusement and confusion with the sights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo, Bob and Charlotte share a similar dissatisfaction with their lives; the spark has gone out of Bob's marriage, and he's become disillusioned with his career. Meanwhile, Charlotte is puzzled with how much John has changed in their two years of marriage, while she's been unable to launch a creative career of her own. Bob and Charlotte become fast friends, and as they explore Tokyo, they begin to wonder if their sudden friendship might be growing into something more.

This movie was so real, any typical romantic comedy type movie would have had them ditch their marriages at the end to be together, but this movie was much deeper than that. It wasn't looking to a fairy-tale ending, it was looking to tell a story of two people being lost in the world and in their minds, and only finding some peace by finding each other.

In GREAT material, a touch on a hand (or a foot) can be more powerful than a kiss in lesser material. X Files fans went nuts everytime Mulder even TOUCHED Scully. Lol! It's lovely and tinged with sexual tension. (And we don't even SEE the foot touch in this clip........awwww).

Maybe i'm reading too much into the visual language of this scene but i feel like the different ways both "Bob" and "Charlotte" rest their heads on their arms say a lot about their characters. Bob is self-assured and relaxed and thus can rest his head directly on his hand. Charlotte on the other hand is lost and scared and thusly needs a soft pillow between her head and hand for comfort. Either way, this movie is a masterpiece, in my opinion.

+Coco Pops he can't find someone his age? He actually sleeps with a singer who is much closer to his age in the movie. Aside from that, sure, a big age gap can be a bit weird but as long as it's two adults it's not illegal. Also, Bob and Charlotte don't get really close physically aside from one small goodbye kiss. The closeness is much more on the emotional side.

  • @cocodakilla

Oh please. Two adults? she is mentally developing and her mind is far from the age that he is! His mind is so different. I can understand a fatherly or grandfatherly man doing this and trying to help her in a daughter way but love? It is far from that! And history psychology science and reality show us that. There are big motives behind these sort of actions. Hollywood is awful

I'm in the same situation that Charlotte has(minus the husband) and I met a guy from NY who had a business trip in HK. We were just sitting in his hotel room with great harbour view, talking about relationships and life. He has a successful life like Bob and also an incomplete marriage. It feels so weird to experience the exact moment like in the movie. And I do miss him

+cx michelle It's hard to find real soulmates. You can always find love, sex, fun in an relationship but really good conversations with somebody who really really "understands", that's very rare. There are people you're talking for 15' and even if it's interesting you feel tired afterwards. And with some you can talk for hours and you hope it never ends and it's like food for the soul. I have experienced it with only one woman, later we were a couple. The relationship unfortunately doesn't exist anymore but i miss her very much, no other can compete her. I don't even miss her so much as a woman, i miss her as a person and the special bound we had.

Never had a relationship. Bit like Charlotte but with no partner. I feel for Bob as he is strained by his marriage and how the atmosphere in social indirectly rules shrugs at it as people pass, even got that problem too which in a simple and clean way just wants connection. We are scard too talk to others becouse it's the reaction that will come with it, as you think but pretend that your ok with things. Mistakes or not, at least having connection was what I was doing. Mistakes I can say is that the reaction of the mistake people say I did or say. I can address myself and think on it, but others it tightly holds it and makes connection the opposite. There are people in my life I have around on facebook, instagram. My actual life? My friend I go see but not the pandemic since. Parasocial relations as anyone. People I think of, I do but dont know what they think, less or more. In my room with the ps2 playing crash Twinsanity, its nice and something to relax too, wish it was with someone I care about. I think when my mind gose round, to make things better I channel things and I ended up here to ease a connection circomstance that something subtle and nice can make sense even though it hurts or confused but your on that ship that eases enough to say it's going to be ok. I wish someone that cares about me as I care about them would reach out, to see that person, I know that's not real but hope for something. Hope for anything to get me by. I mean hollow Bastion castle from kingdom hearts were built by love with eventual trial and errors, its perfection and imperfection growing. I just wish for a childs eyes that love was the expectation it really was or can be. I mean simple and clean, what's wrong with that?

I think this was beautifully used in EDEN’s song. When I listen to the “I’m not worried about you” the words sound dim, but it’s presented lightly. It’s probably just me but I register it as something similar to ‘Your well being doesn’t worry me’. Idk, I always heard those words when I was younger. Everything I was, was mine alone, my burdens, my heart, my whole being. I was left alone to become a functioning human by myself. Bc of that I always wanted someone to share it all with, these feelings for me complement Rock + Roll so well. I love how our own unique experiences can easily add another layer to something like this.

No matter what age/stage you are in life, the Big Questions remain unanswered. The brilliance of this movie is that this point is driven home, but with humor & humanity. A modern classic.

"Your life as you know it is gone, never to return." Those words were a stab in the heart when I watched this scene as a new mom, just a few months into parenthood. I was in denial for a while that my old life was gone once my child came into the picture. But it was. And I loved that old life. And I still mourn it. But the cold hard truth of this scene was also what I needed to hear at that time. And I realized that this feeling could be turned into art and that made me feel better.

I love this film so much and I always find myself coming back to it whenever I feel like I'm at a fork in the road. I really try to take to heart what Bob says about how, "the more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you." I'm two years away from turning 30 and while I do feel like I'm in a good place at the moment, I still find myself worrying that I don't really know who I am or what I want out of life. I definitely relate a lot to Scarlett's character when she says, "I just don't know what I'm supposed to be".

It's so perfect that this scene takes place on a bed. A risky move by Sofia Coppola pulled off by these perfect performances. The bed stages their intimacy without there being any sexual tension. They create their own quiet cave tucked away from the chaotic wider world.
