Hello everyone, and welcome to Maelove! Today, we're going to discuss how the skin changes during menopause, how these changes are driven by estrogen, and how hormone (estrogen) therapy can affect your skin.
As you go through menopause, you might notice significant changes in your skin. This isn't just your imagination, and it's not merely a continuation of the typical aging process you've experienced up to this point. In fact, menopause brings about an accelerated type of skin aging due to shifts in hormonal levels.
But here's the good news: you can combat and treat these changes. Trustworthy anti-aging skincare ingredients, such as Vitamins A, B, and C, can help reverse post-menopausal skin changes and improve your skin's overall appearance. We'll explore retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives), niacinamide and panthenol (Vitamin B3 and provitamin B5), and Vitamin C for postmenopausal skin in a future article.
Furthermore, there are treatment options specifically designed to address hormonal changes during menopause, including estrogen replacement and topical estrogen-like compounds. Let's dive deeper into how these treatments work and how they can benefit your skin during this time of change.
To state the obvious, this article should not be used as a substitute for direct medical advice from your doctor.
This content is provided as part of our commitment to bringing science-based information to the public, and it is intended to offer general scientific background on the topic. We strongly encourage you to consult with a healthcare provider who can diagnose and prescribe treatments specifically tailored to your needs.

Very disappointing to see information that implies HRT is extremely dangerous for most women, which may cause women to seek less effective treatments that could decrease their long term health. A great source for unbiased HRT options is Menopause Taylor's videos. She gives much more current and detailed information on benefits and risks of all options to help women determine what is right for their individual needs and health issues instead of making blanket statements to scare women off of potentially very valuable menopause treatment options.

I adore Maelove, but this video is a tad misleading. Please read "Estrogen Matters" in terms of HRT. If Estrogen is combined with pill form Progesterone, the risks are significantly decreased and you can be on it way more than 1-2 years.

Agree that this is misleading and potentially health-degrading information for women experiencing menopause. Check out Menopause Taylor, Angie Hot-and-Flashy, and Dr. Mary Claire Haver for good medical information about HRT. The opinion that HRT isn’t safe for women is based on an old HRT study that was done incorrectly from the onset and has been proven incorrect.

Yes, indeed, and we mentioned this as well. The addition of progesterone can combat some of the risks associated with cancer of the uterus, but it also raise the risks of blood clots and stroke. Due to these risks, many doctors will be cautious about extended HRT. However, definitely, you can be on HRT more than 1-2 years, and it will depend on your doctor whether the benefits outweigh the risks. There are definite benefits, as mentioned here and in our hot flashes video.

This doesn’t take into account the intricacies of medicine especially for those with chronic medical conditions. Rhetoric like this is harmful because it discourages HRT and it can be protective and beneficial for those of us who’ve had total hysterectomy and oophorectomy like myself. These products are wonderful but they arn’t a replacement for HRT.

We hope we have outlined the benefits of HRT, especially for the skin, and indeed, as mentioned, it's hard to replace these benefits. However, also outlined are the risks in terms of increased risk of breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer as stated in scientific literature. Indeed, if you have had a surgical removal of uterus and ovaries, then some of these risks may not apply to you. As stated, this video does not replace one on one discussions with your doctor about what is right for you.

This is a good start for Hormone Replacement therapy and its benefits. However, you need to check out Dr. Louise Newson in the UK and several other who have evidence that HRT does not increase breast cancer risk. HRT along with good skin care can go along way to help mitigate aging skin. Keep going! You need more information and evidence to share with your listeners.

Hi Ruth, thanks! Indeed, HRT has many skin benefits as outlined! Glad you enjoyed the information. For risks, indeed, there can be many opinions on research findings, and science is often subject to controversy. Here is a good in depth discussion of the nuances to cancer risk with HRT as reviewed on the American Cancer Society website: www.cancer.org/healthy/cancer-causes/medical-treatments/menopausal-hormone-replacement-therapy-and-cancer-risk.html

Thank you for this! Please do more of this type of content. As a post-menopausal woman, age 64, I am very interested in some natural estrogen replacement to help with skin sagging, especially my neck and under/chin.

Lots of misinformation in this video. There’s a huge difference between oral Estrogen HRT and transdermal. Please stick to skincare.

Completely agree. This information seems outdated. There are new studies that suggest HRT prevents heart disease, osteoporosis and brain health. Dr. Mary Clare Haver and the book by TS Wiley Sex, Lies and Menopause is great for information.

Here is a 2023 article that reviews oral versus transdermal routes. This study finds that some risks such as for VTE (venous thromboembolism) are improved with the transdermal route, while other risks such as for breast cancer do not differ between the two: link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00404-022-06647-5

This video is misleading and very uninformed of the latest information HRT. This is a skincare company and should not be talking about anything related to HRT. PERIOD. This video should be removed.
