I was kinda surprised that everyone thought it was such a step from 60 to 144, as i bought an 144hz monitor last year, but hadnt noticed any difference at all the first half year. Then i found out by mistake that i manually had to change from 60 to 144 and holy cow. I was lost, but now im found.

I was Testing it. I Played a little around with a friend and we came to the conclusion that when your Ping is like 100 and you are getting peeked you have the disadvantage and when you run to cover your body is lagging behind so you can get shot even tho you are already in Cover on your screen. This disadvantage gets worse the higher your ping's getting. And no a higher ping doesn't give you more peekers Advantage bc even tho you have more time before the enemy can see you, your shots are also getting registered with a delay. Sorry for my grammar xD english is not my first language

It’s interesting that 60hz with 300fps was within margin of error of 144hz/fps, would be interesting to see more tests with that!

this alone shows different things already: - more fps IS important or at least DOES make a difference, even on low hz - this isn't a study and you shouldn't take any of the results actually for granted just because some people that are used to high refresh rates think that high refresh rates were great...

I wonder if this is something that can be addressed in software or what else is causing this effect.

@@DigiDriftZone it’s due to the mouse or controller input “polling” at 1000hz or whatever. So your inputs match what is rendered more closely at greater internal FPS (144 or 240fps), even if display output is 60fps. I notice a difference in camera movement responsiveness on an Xbox if I change display settings to 120fps, even if the game is locked at 60fps. The controller input is matching the frames at 120hz in the game engine. So it has 2 thumb stick updates per frame instead of one. It averages then for Greater accuracy. Similar to how iPhone screens touch input is 120hz but screen is 60fps.

I went from 60 to 165hz and my god i never knew it was that much of a difference..

as someone who went from 60hz, to 240hz, i can say the difference is really big, on 60hz you need to learn how to hit enemies before they are on your crosshair, while on 240hz you can actually hit them when they are there, when i was on 60hz i thought the guns in the game were like that, but then when i moved to 240 suddenly i couldnt hit shots anymore, since i was used to the delay i would always shoot before they actually were on my crosshair, for like a month i couldnt hit a single shot when i played on 240, i even searched to see if it was only my monitor that was a fake 240hz or smth lol.

i think its the compute power that makes the difference as seen in this test. higher fps means it computes faster so ur input is less delayed and u hit ur shots. i rather have 300fps and 144 hz than 300hz and 144 fps. clearly visible in these tests.

@@Koragh_ It depends on the monitor, some are more blurry at high refresh rates and some have special tech to make it less blurry like DyAC+ on the BenQ Zowie XL2746k

About 2-3 years ago I went from a 60 hz monitor to a 144 hz monitor and could easily tell the difference in my gameplay between the two. I realized that everything is far less stuttery in my directional movements, which gives my eyes a easier time tracking opponents. Albeit I am not a huge FPS gamer, I play a lot more MOBAs and can say that the difference there is highly noticeable as well. Sometime in the future I will be moving up to 240 or higher hz monitors and will see if those help as significant as the switch from 60 to 144 did. Hopefully so, as I always like seeing that my abilities aren't slightly hampered by technological setbacks

I still have to get used to playing fps games on 144hz bc my eyes were so used to seeing blurriness when turning. It makes a difference even when doing everyday tasks on the computer

I didn't notice any difference between 165 fps/Hz and 240 fps/Hz tbh. You might, but I didn't. If you could test it out I would deffo recommend doing so. I saw something a few years back and only a couple of the top e-sports players could accurately tell the higher fps rates from the 144fps/Hz "standard" of the time.

Linus is actually good at aiming, and this was just an aiming test where the player was stationary. He's talked about on WAN how he likes to be a sniper in games for that reason, it's all about aiming and not so much about moving and shooting fast.

It is 2022 and this is still the BEST video by far on comparing the effects of refresh rates.

This video, when it came out a few years ago, actually motivated me to finally pull the trigger on a high refresh rate gaming monitor. Going from a 60 monitor to 144 was the best upgrade I ever made. I highly recommend it for anyone thinking about it.

The double doors at 60mhz explanation absolutely reminds me of the "lag" behind the players movement in OSRS, but in reverse..because this isn't a network/tick interval test.

Both FPS and screen resolution fall into the rule of "diminishing returns". Where you'll have to increase twice as much as before only to get half as much as you used to.

I'm a fan of racing simulations, and I game on a 1440p monitor reduced to 1080p vertical (because old card). My FPS in game often range from 40ish to 60 on a 75Hz display. I often struggle at high speeds with identifying objects passing by in search for my breaking points and was craving for higher resolution to help me out (it would help for viewing distance, plus more details when coming closer); but I recently accidentaly discovered, when I found myself having an easier time on this, that higher FPS was making the image smoother and was helping a lot with this issue. So yeah, next panel will definitely be a 144 Hz IPS, when I can get a video card that can drive it for a decent price... I'd get 1440p 144 Hz anytime over 4k 60 FPS, since they are close equivalent in pixels per second (530M vs 498M); my current card can hardly push beyond 100-145M px/s at the lowest settings depending on titles and circumstances, so I'm a bit far off. XD

Not a bad idea for non gamers but with the people he used it would have been kinda pointless. You can see the differences especially from going 60 to 144. Noticing 144 to 240 would be harder but for pro level gamers who are more used to it it may not be that hard. If you noticed one the first things they check is quickly flicking from side to side, seeing how smooth the display is.

he missed to mention the most important part at 11:13 is not the rendering, but the server feedback between both the clients and the server to where his hitbox was when he jumped. which is the biggest factor in response time when it comes to hitting something in the game. If it were a local feedback, that werent depending on Client to client registration that jumps back and forth between a server it would be giving a different result.

I noticed my settings weren't to 144Hz like they should and when i switched, i instantly noticed a difference. Felt like putting my glasses on after a long time without them. And that's from someone who usually doesn't see that much differences in those things

I'm curious as to the differences that are demonstrated between players. For example, on the double doors results (17:02), 60 to 144 made a big difference, but 144 to 240 made very little difference for the pros, and yet Linus and Paul improved dramatically. So, basically, it seems to me that the skills of a casual player (if Linus can be called that) can be buffed through better tech, but the pros eventually reach a plateau where the tech doesn't help nearly as much, showing where their real potential truly lies. As an old gamer who's average and declining, playing with the server desync on Roblox with a 10 yo laptop, upgrading to a new computer eliminated the problems I experienced that were causing me to fail more...But didn't make a big difference where speed and accuracy (without lag) were required. So, higher refresh is very helpful but higher FPS is much more important. I think these tests show that there's a sweet spot for improvement via tech, and it lies between 144 and 240 FPS, with higher refresh, but I'm not sure where. Very interesting! Videos like this are of much more interest to me than your fluff videos.

30:20 I think the accurate way to put it is that if your game has input handling synchronized to output frames, you obviously want high FPS. For games that run input in parallel thread running at e.g. 1000 Hz the output frame rate has obviously zero effect on your input delay. Counter Strike would be an example of a game where input latency is defined by the output FPS (the frames rendered by the GPU, not the monitor).

You still get the most recent frame on monitor which is FPS/refresh_rate - 1 frames less input lag between screen and game engine. Full input lag consists of many things.

@@chupasaurus Yes, but input latency is from movement of the mouse to the game engine reacting to it. Some games run game physics loop in 1000 Hz and can accept mouse input 1000 events per second. On the other hand, games such as CS:GO read mouse and keyboard event *once* per rendered frame. As a result, you get better mouse movement tracking in the game engine if you have higher FPS because any curved mouse movement will be more accurately tracked.

A lot of older games had the input logic tied to the render logic and so higher fps even with your monitor not displaying them increases responsiveness. I’ve tried to in the past decouple input and render logic on older games but it tends to leave the game feeling somewhat strange.

@John Monk They say the same thing about "gaming" headsets. I don't know, but I guess that makes sense. Company wants to earn money, put gaming behind stuff and people will buy it for the status. Doesn't have to be as good for the same price range, just enough status to satisfy those types of people.

ive been playing games on 60fps 60 hz for 10 years now and since i bought my new 144hz monitor my skill has improved i feel like i have gotten better at flick shotting

In my own experience, hopping from 60Hz to 144Hz was a big difference in feeling and as for most fps players when I jumped from 144Hz to 240Hz the difference was there but not as much as the previous jump, although for a short period of time I had to jump back to 144Hz and it was literally as bad for me as 60Hz. When experiencing 240Hz anything below that felt just as bad, even 144Hz.

The dust2 double door test really was eye opening.

What I would love to know is the order of the test rigs being used. I would like to know whether there is substantial correlation to performance improvement in the rigs being used last compared to the ones used first. Since I know for a fact, familiarity with the test will matter. Random order can only eliminate the change on multiple swaps and alot more tests to average out the standart deviation.

@@mybeautifulcat7011 probably not the central nervous part of the eye but the peripheral side of the eye can certainly do , since its connected to the subconscious mind.

From 144 to 240 I have noticed that it can sometimes be hard to distinguish players from the environment as quickly since they do not have the classic "jittery" movements that I am used to reacting to. It can be seen at 19:00 very well. It is similar to games with improved graphic qualities... sometimes I just need to lower the quality of grass/trees so that I can catch those tiny little moments where a player scootches or wiggles and becomes displaced from their environment. This really only applies to environments that are mostly static but sometimes getting better input/quality/fps can circumvent niche techniques that we have relied upon to overcome obstacles. Another example that has come to mind is moving from a wired to wireless mouse. I was used to the occasional tugging or resistance from the front of my mouse and losing that made me feel as if my mouse was spinning/rotating in my hand instead of being dragged across my desk. In all regards I had made a technological advancement and should have seen improvements but instead felt like I had to relearn.

Awr....spotted that one way to late. Would have been interesting to test, if high refresh-rate CRT monitors (the way those old monitors work is even more predictable) would have made a noticeable impact as well. And some 'electrophysical' experiments would have been even more fun to watch.

Basically with lower frame rates you have to subconsciously interpolate more, even if you're a pro having to guess where someone's head is in BETWEEN frames means confidence is what is most affected. Some players are less affected by this loss of confidence, and some players are so incompetent (me) that there is no change in confidence because we can barely track a barn door as is.

I have played Fortnite on the switch at 30fps, and have recently built a computer and tried fortnite at 144 fps, and the difference is HUGE. Harvesting materials is much easier now that the latency is lower, meaning I can flick to the circles much easier, and the same is true for close range shotgun shots. The better framerate also allows me to do more actions each second, meaning my builds and edits much more rarely fail to register. Whenever I use my laptop now, it feels so bad that the cursor jitters a lot more and is much less smooth. I am currently waiting for a 1440p monitor I recently bought to arrive, that way I can also see how much a higher resolution will help. I am not expecting it to be nearly as drastic of a difference, since my 'old' 1080p 144hz monitor is the same size. So the only effect resolution will have is letting me resolve things from further away, meaning easier snipes and long range AR shots, but not any better performance in game.

Linus, You need to run this test again with Shroud on coffee sips.

Coming back to this, what about basically warming up at first. Since the test is repeated wouldn’t they be basically “warming up” during 60 and be more acclimated each jump as well?

FYI: those misses on double door has to do with Hitboxes. the backpack isnt a hitbox PLUS its 128tick so the hitboxes arent lagging behind the models as much due to interp

My k/d has been over 1.00 my last 10 games. I'm a lot smoother in my movements and setting the sensitivity up to 7 increases my response time. Purchased an HP 24Xi monitor that outputs 144hz at 1080p. I'm happy with my purchase.

Back when I used to play competitively I used to use a 19 inch crt monitor at 640 X 480 at 200hz with ps2 mouse rate of 200hz. The difference over 60hz was incredible. I stopped playing when LCD screens took over, not realising I should have kept the crt

Interesting results. I play Distance (car parkour game) with a 60 FPS cap to save power (60 Hz monitor), but seeing the results setting it to uncapped might save me in a few tight situations because of the lower input lag.

This must have taken a ton of work to put together. Congrats guys.

When BO2 came out on console, shield to shotgun switch in a blank of an eye made it difficult to track. PC on the other hand, you’re able to see them switch at a slower pace 60 frames and over.

I think so. With one ad, less than a dozen subjects, and probably a few thousand in spending, Nvidia put out the best evidence yet that the idea of "frames wins games" is evidence based. In the medical world, marketing material like this would need to be FDA reviewed before being shared. Obviously theres a lot less at stake in gaming vs with medicines, but it's interesting to me to see how differently these industries are regulated. Linus has occasionally spoken about how his statements during paid promotions are different from those he makes during his own content. I wonder to what extent his statements presented here are influenced by the fact that it's a paid promotion.

Answer is: if you're used to the setup/game, high FPS doesn't make a huge diff, if you're not, the higher FPS will help significantly, one thing we all agree on, 60 to 144 is noticeable, not that much from 144 to 240 though

I'm just glad to still be alive to see 4k, just in time to start losing my eyesight ;_;. What about CS@ 10fps? its lot more like shooting long range with wind irl. Gaming since 1983 keep on rocking!

Summary: 240 Hz makes you transcend time and space.

240 FPS more precisely, it seems Hz thing was the minor factor here.

@@C3lloman what? the fps just helps the input lag, the hz helps your eyes see what they should see. 240hz 8k golden mantra when?

@@C3lloman to clarify, every test they did had 60fps on a 60Hz monitor, 144fps on a 144hz monitor etc. if you are playing a game at 240fps on a 60Hz monitor all you're seeing is 60fps physically

@@goodtimesgofast22 No watch towards the end. They did one test with 300 FPS @ 60 Hz compared to 60 FPS @ 60 Hz and the result with 300 FPS was much better. So the bottom line is, you should first make sure your GPU outputs high FPS and only then consider monitor upgrade.

@@C3lloman I have no clue how this happens. We all saw the same video, and yet only 1 out of 4 people understood what was shown. FPS is absolutely the most important thing throughout all tests, as shown by Shroud on 300 FPS 60 Hz Double Doors.

Linus this could be a huge series inviting pro’s to do different tests like this monthly

I'd say 144hz is best, I like it when playing Borderlands 3 such a game changer playing with high framerate, everything moving around smooth lookin. Projectiles coming at you with no lag. It's awesome.

Waaaay late to this one, but I would love to see more of these hardware vs monitor vs gamers vs Linus vs Paul things. Fantastic.
